I just read an article in my local newspaper about how (apparently) there are a lot of people saying that The Lord of the Rings movie's are rascist. Heres a snippet of the article: "There's an ugly war raging among the Tolkien faithful, those lovers of Hobbits and Elves and the magical lands of Middle Earth. "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy-both the films and the books-is rooted in racism, say critics, a white supremacist fantasy where the good guys are white, the bad guys are black and behavior is predetermined by race. P.C.-poppycock, say Tolkien supporters and the films' executive producer, who insist those who see racial undertones in the epic tale are misinterpreting the half century-old classic that has been turned into a series of blockbuster movies that have earned more than $600 million so far. "'The Lord of the Rings' is racist," John Yatt wrote in British newspaper, The Guardian. "... the races that Tolkien has put on the side of evil are given a rag-bag of nonwhite characteristics that could have been copied straight from a (British National Party) leaflet. Dark,slant-eyed,swarthy,broad-faced - it's amazing he didn't go the whole hog and give them a natural sense of rhythm." |

Of course you can kind of say the same thing about Star Wars, you know. The good guys are on the "light side" of the force, and the bad guys are the "dark side". Plus they wear a lot of black (except for the stormtroopers.) |

I always just saw the movie and the books as metaphors. Light vs. Dark = Good vs. Evil. The fact that Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and Hobbits are working together for a common cause says that it doesn't matter what you look like, we need to fight evil. And for as for the evil side, Orcs, Goblins, and Trolls are comming together to fight what they think is 'evil'. Not to mention that one of the leaders is Saruman (who is white). And we all know how black people appoint white men to rule their people :\ |

it might not be racist, but the film is dangerous within the current context, that is to say that inspires people to separate good and evil in a modern struggle which cannot be drawn as such... i find that the lack of loss on the side of "the good guys" to this point is deplorable, in that it can very easily strike people as a pro-war message. |

People protesting this are silly, maybe in Tolkien's fantasy world filled imagination there were no black people (for whatever reasons), it shouldent matter really, he isnt being outwardly racist at all |
