to xltronic's resident aspiring producers/artists:

has anyone - who writes/records their own music - recorded
an album/demo and sent it to any major/indy labels? if so
which ones..

I have an anthology of sorts that is now almost 3 years old
that I sent to schools as a showcasing of my musical talent
that I want to send out to labels like def jux, warp, ninja
tune.. maybe rephlex and astralwerks .. has anyone here done
this, or something similar?

.peace

btw, my money's on tampa today

No, but i'm thinking about doing it!

But i'm chilling, and giving it some time. Theres time
enough. I dont feel my own music has reached my own high
standards yet, but i'm getting closer. =)

from what suggestions i've heard... you should for a demo.
have only 20 mins. of material, make sure it's your best
stuff. artwork might help in the slightest. and make sure
your contact info is right on the demo (cd, tape, md...
whatever media you use). try to find a label who's artists/
style matches with you music. you also might want to contact
the label before you send something to see if it's okay with
them.

and astralwerks is just a distributor, not a label.

good luck to you.

I sent some demos. One to ant-zen and one to warp. Only ant
zen responded.
"Some very nice ideas, but at the moment we're not
interested in publishing".

well, I've made a lot of tracks since then, so I'm preparing
a second wave of demos.

i will be sending my 3 track demo to rephlex as soon as i
can find a friend with a minidisc that i can record it onto.
Apparently they prefer minidiscs to CDs... its 3 of my best
tracks...

i have a feeling thought won't reply and ill be left
disheartened....

:-(

Maybe if you pack it really original... For example, bake a
nice cake or pie and pack the minidisc inside. They'll be
surprised and curious why someone would stick an MD in a
cake.

or they will maybe just eat the disc.

yeah, well, the second batch of demos i sent out got no
replies except for 1, and that was just a "send more"
thing.

just be patient with it i guess, or stop sucking, i guess

should be either one of those options :)
Well I sent out carefully just to two labels.
I need to find out more about which labels I could fit in.
(If they want me that is)

"Apparently they prefer minidiscs to CDs... "

It's so they can nick your MDs, blank them, and record the
latest 'Phlex on it for their personal pleasure. ;-)

ochre, you know what? i think they do really do that.

i sent mine in 2 weeks ago on MD, no reply, but the thing is
it says they put ur email address onto a subscription list,
and i havent recieved any emails. Its like they havent even
processed it. I.e its come in, and they nicked it!

SO ill send it in again on CD. ANd again and again and again
till they have to sign me up

mwahahahhaa

nah I've never bothered.

they should get off their ass and do some scouting.
if any labels bothered doing that ochre would be on like
warp or something

A demo from you would be a pretty damn good chance of
getting some attention oddy mate!!!!!!!!111

don't only send to warp/rephlex etc.

your chances are MUCH better with smaller labels. also don't
forget that the bigger labels hardly ever contract anyone
directly from demo's anymore - they mostly look for new acts
in the smaller labels.

well that makes a kind of (retarded) sense, doesn't it.

girlfriends brother and distribute locally aswell

I've often thought that- especially when you consider
minidisc aren't as good sound quality as CD :/

The only other thing I can think is that they're slightly
more expensive so it discourages people from "mass mailing"
demos to lots of labels.

my first (and tight now; only) production "press repeat to
continue" was really big for me, and I kinda almost sended
it to a demo-reviewer and a record-label. But as time went
by I realized that it was a premature thing to do, and that
I could do much better. So the EP I'm working on now will be
sent out (unless I think it's premature again).

I know, as soon as you finish a demo CD/release or whatever,
before it's even distributed you are making tracks that
shame it technically.

when the Space raiders wanted to get signed up, they send a
pack of space raiders crisps to skint records everyay for a
week, then the last day send their demo and a big box of
crisps....do that!

yeah totally...

but right now I dunno if this EP will be my last production
on the elctronic-scene, cuz there's just so much more in
live/instrumental-music in a band...unless offcourse I get
signed...

but the thing is ur style is ALWAYS gonna be developing,
like im sure by the time RDJ album came out, aphex was
creating tracks much more superior...

so might as well get some tracks out now!

He he, my demo cds are actually sitting in a pile waiting
for me to put some covers on them before shipping them out
:)
