Sound design, anyone?

For the music makers out here, how many of you make your
own sounds? If you don't, I highly recommend it. It's a
very rewarding experience! I think one gets a better feel
for one's tracks this way. Questions/comments?

I'll take that as a 'no.' :D

I do.
I prefer own sounds above presets.
With my micro modular clavia site I have a virtual
modular synth under my little fingers.

I dont do anything but.. . I would never bother using normal
loops or preset instruments.. . I tweak my hardware just as
much as my software. ..

I've been making drum samples from scratch all day. That's
why I asked--I love making sounds. ;D
I have a Roland Jx-305. It's fantastic! I have no
complaints with it; thoroughly satisfied! One of FEW
digital synthesizers with analogue control knobs and a huge
hard disk--plus plenty of usable default sounds (pianos,
basses, etc) not to mention the quick processor and
unlimited customizability!

I don't do it as often as I used to- I'm using presets more
and more (although samples are still kept to a minimum). I
tend to play with making presets for fx and instruments when
I get writers block- that way I have some new stuff to try
when I get back to making music.

If you're running fruity loops and you set the parameters of
the TS404s or OSC3s, that counts as sound design--even
though it's software.
I think FL is a great tool for working with samples--great
ways to modify them. I think really FL only sucks if you
use default sounds. Just bores me to death to hear the same
unaltered kicks and basses going on a couple of times.

Ah right yes, I'll usually tweak samples to some degree
before usign them- I'll only use them "as is" if the sound
is already exactly as I want and any editing would be a
token gesture to make it my own. I've only used unaltered
samples on a few occasisions and even then I tend to put FX
on them.

ill almost always tweak it at least a bit... add effects or
a filter or something, or sometimes to the degree of making
it unrecogniseable as having come from the original sample

ive never tried sampling stuff myself ... i want to some day
though

i guess i need a mini disc + mic or something

My musical ideas usually come during the sound creation
process. I'd say, I sit with my synths 85% of the time
creating sounds, and compose and record when I've got enough
to try some ideas.

Hey, C738, I also have Clavia synths. A Micro Mod and a full
fledged Modular Rack. I wish I could afford a Nordlead3
sometime in the future. It's teh sexy!

HAHAHA OMG DOLLEATER! YOUR NEW AVATAR!

IT ROCKS! HAHAHA I loved that movie

The way I see it at least, is if you really want to express
yourself origionally, and your working digitally, the ONLY
way to do it is with origional synth patches, origional
drums hits, and even as far as to use your own custom vst
effects or programs, the whole shabang, its the only way to
grow and learn as an electronic artist. Because I see people
who use presets, and get stuck into using them 24.7 and they
never move on, they get stuck. Designing your own sounds is
the only way to go IMO. But presets are ok sometimes if you
tweak them around some and try and use them in a different
way, and try out different things

I like to get into the nitty gritty stuff though so I hope I
havent offended anyone
