I've had this cd for a little while now, and i really think
it is amazing! Before this, the only Plaid i had heard was
the P-Brane ep. But now i realise you really need to listen
to these guys on an album-format. 4 songs just isn't enough
;-)

What i like mostly about this album is really the fun
and the joy and the love for melody that oozes out of every
song! I think it is very different from the likes of Afx,
Autechre and Squarepusher... compared to Plaid they are all
very serious (except maybe squarepusher)... nothing wrong
with that... but none of those guys can make me as happy
with their music as this album can :-)

I just love how they are constantly changing the music
(going from delicate piano-pieces, to heavy beats, and then
suddenly some crazy scratching), all the time making sure
the main melody of the song remains going in one way or the
other. For instance in the amazing song New Bass
Hippo
...Sometimes you only the melody softly in the
synths... somewhere in the background.... or only in the
bassline... or vaguely being played by that piano. It's like
they are almost playing the melody... carrying it
from one instrument to the other. You can hear it but not
focus on it.... and the tension grows and grows as you feel
this glorious moment approaching... And then it suddenly
moves upfront in the mix, and everything falls into place...
only for it to fall apart again :-) There is this constant
tension in the song (and also the other songs on the album).
It hardly sounds like electronic music anymore... it's more
like a bunch of musicians hanging out together, jamming with
these melodies... like they do in jazz-music. (cough...
Ralome!...)

I also love the song Deadsea... it sounds like it's
being played with my favourite instrument (the cello) which
makes it sound sad and melancholic (the only one on the
album that isn't happy). And it becomes even more dramatic
towards the end... almost sounds like a funeral-march.

A song that always catches me by surprise is dang
spot
... i don't know what it is with this one... it puts
a gigantic smile on my face and makes me want to dance
around the room :-D It's such a fun song!

Pino Pomo fits very well with it... the same happy
atmosphere only not as energetic. But still i feel like
these two songs belong together in a way.

And well... i've run out of ways of describing the music,
but i also wanted to mention Shackbu and Little
People
... because they are simply 2 of the most
impressive and entertaining pieces of music i've heard in a
long time!

I am now officially a big fan of these guys! :-p I can't
wait to hear the rest of their albums... and i'm also
starting to grow more and more curious of the Black Dog now
:-) I wonder if you can already hear in there the brilliance
i hear in this album! And i really do think it's brilliant!

I also like the artwork :-p Very different from other
warp-cd's artwork. Just like the music it's all about having
fun (hehe, you think the music is being made by a
complicated machine, but it's really just a monkey with a
record-player ;-)).

I kinda feel like making some good photocopies of the cover
(the backsides) and maybe enlarging them... to see if you
can really make a model of the cover if you cut out all
those shapes and glue them together... has it been done
before? Are all the measurements correct?

Hello George :D

I agree with you about Plaid. They really do have some songs
which make you grin like a fool! The funny thing about their
albums is that with Double Figure, I think it has a really
strong opening few songs; With Not For Threes I think it has
an amazing middle section... and Rest Proof Clockwork for me
gets better towards the end :D

Their EPs are also great - check out 'Booc' if you can

I'm not keen on the Black Dog stuff tho, but I am trying to
get into 'em ;) Needs a bit of work tho

Hello Bill!

Yeah, i had noticed over the last months that you are quite
fond of Plaid :-) Now i can see why!

The highlights for me are spread out nice and even over
RPC... some in the beginning, some halfway, some towards the
end. Maybe i'll understand your point better once i've also
heard Not For Threes and Double Figure :-D

I need to look up a complete discography of theirs
somewhere... didn't even know they had ep's besides P-Brane
;-)

Totally agree with all of you. It started out with RPC,
truly an amazing album. And yes, Double Figure's first 3-4
tracks are worth buying the whole album. Love' em.

I only like the first track (or was it the second? one of
those 2) But that one track is really good and would fit on
not for 3's (a much better album imo)

Yeah they have quite a lot of stuff out, with the black dog
previous incarnation some of it is quite confusing. I trust
Xltronic's discography will be extensive :)

If you like Bjork, the track she does with them on NTF is
awesome... I just managed to get an mp3 of 'Itsu' as well
(only available in quicktime vid at the moment) and that
track is soooo gorgeous... one of my top tracks ever.

Their new album is gonna be a dvd as WELL... if you haven't
got one yet, better start saving!

Trainer is a 2cd set that collects most of their black dog
work (the band they were in before splitting with some other
guy and forming the duo Plaid)... check Pitchfork for some
reviews, they like Plaid.

NTF = NFT? So Björk does some vocals on that album? That's
rather nice :-) I did not know that! Looks like that one
should be next on my list! (*loves Björk*).

And don't worry, i've got a dvd-player ;-) So i'm all ready
for the new album... bring it on!

Trainer is sweet, easily my favorite release by Plaid. Disc
2 especially tracks 2 and 3 is amazing.

Now, what I find funny is, Disc 2 (perfect condition) will
only work on certain cd players for some odd reason. On the
ones it doesn't work it just makes a clicking noise. The
same goes for my brothers Disc 2 which is also in perfect
condition.

Does anyone else have that problem?

I like Plaid muchly

I think I enjoyed Double Figuere the best out of all of
them

The different styles in all of their albums is really
something, from their early Black Dog days to their last ep.
Its like a story they are telling though a book of sound.
Yay!

Surrounded, I liked your summary of RPC. I think its a
great piece of work,as are all of their releases. For my
ears, however, I find that Black Dog, with and without the
members of Plaid, produce a more interesting and variable
sound. This is not to take away from Plaid, who are
definitely among my favourite artists, but I find The Dog at
another level, with more variable beats and more interesting
textures. Your likening of Plaid to jazz is spot on, and
with that I think comes a slightly more conservative
approach (as if I just called jazz conservative! Jazz: The
Original Freestyle). I highly recommend you get your hands
on any Black Dog you can. I was listening to Music For
Adverts last night, and was still surprised by the breaks
and variations it contains.

Cheers :)

The black dog eh?... it has been recommended to me before on
this board.

"I find The Dog at another level, with more variable
beats and more nteresting
textures.
"

well that does sound pretty good i guess (altough in "their
style", i think the plaid i've heard so far is pretty much
perfect. I'd be very surprised if the black dog turns out to
be even better. But hey, i've been surprised before
;-)

"with that I think comes a slightly more conservative
approach
"

hm... so the black dog is less jazz, and more idm/electronic
perhaps?

"I highly recommend you get your hands on any Black Dog
you can.
"

I'm actually a bit confused by the whole black dog/plaid
discography. I've seen Trainer in a recordstore once. But i
don't know if i should get that, or some of the original
Black Dog-releases. And if so: which is best to start with?

Thanks for your input anyways! :-D
I will definitly be buying more Plaid, and
probably also some Black Dog :-)
