I was in the middle of a pleasant conversation with one of
my friends online and a bunch of shots rang out. A
seamlessly never ending stream of thirty shots it seemed. I
dropped to the floor. Hoping a stray wouldn't catch me in
the head, roughly 5 minutes after the initial shot I heard
the sirens of emergency vehicles. I finally mustered the
courage to go outside for an analysis of the situation and
observed a spectacle like I have never seen. I witnessed
police cars darting back and fourth on the boulevard,
blaring sirens and the buzz of a helicopter approaching
from a distance. Upon the choppers arrival it turned on its
spot light and gave me a good assumption of the location of
the shooting. It seems the shots came from the next block.

Sitting at my computer obviously very shaken. I pondered the
if anyone on this mb can relate to this situation. I have
come to the conclusion that many if not all of you cannot.
Its very upsetting to hear your interpretations of the US,
and mainly Los Angeles and its people. You take the idea of
gang bangers very light heartedly. It is a joke to most of
you, that there is a place where murder can be recognized as
a common occurrence. I could only imagine how any of you
would deal with a situation like this. All your references
to people in the united states are very accusing and
unfounded. Point in fact, I'm very sick of people making
offensive comments about Americans. You have no idea what
its like to live where I live, so don't create ideas in your
head as to what we are all like or what living here is like.
You prejudge far too often.

I'm not angry at any of you, nor do I bear any animosity for
any of you. I am just sickened by this way of life. I have
averted death in the past a number of times. I was nearly
killed in one instance. I just want to make it clear that
the next time I hear a comment directed towards
Californians. I will not be so easy-going in return.

any American bashing in the future, which has become such a
common ritual on this mb. I actually hope you're not
indifferent about it and tolerate it.

I have suffered this in a myriad of ways..my homeland is
Afghanistan..need I say more about that..I grew up in
Karachi..one of the acknowledged most violent cities in the
World..there I went to a University where matters of student
politics were resolved with AK47's and grenade launchers (I
shit you not)..many a time were we forced to spend hours
unders our desks..once I was shot at for merely wanting to
cross a corridor while a shoot out was going on..I still
have a scar on my arm where the bullet luckily zinged past
without entering...

Then 10 years ago I was in the Statesandwhile working at a
fast food and pizzareia restaurant, in a troubled part of
Wichita Kansas I was part of no less than 8 hold ups
collectively..three of them in a single week..with a
crackhead with frigteningly shaky grip was pointing a gun at
my head..

so..I guess..yes..I can relate...

Yes Im sure you can, but i dont think i can relate to that!
Thats horrible...

Im sure you would be very upset if you over heard a
conversation on how stupid everyone in Afganistan or Karachi
is stupid because of the killings. Thats basically the
equivelent of whats happeining to Americans on the mb right
now.

would it be an overkill to add that I survived no less than
3 full scale tornados while living in Wichita. Living on the
top floor of a building no less because the ignorant fresh
off the boat foreigner that I was it didn't register that
the reason the rent on the top floor was $100 cheaper was
because ... yes you guessed it the building was right in the
middle ofa frequent tornado alert zone so much so that the
warning alarm siren was located right above my window.

About that 10000 of youre people dying part. I suppose you
were refering to those who needless died in Afghanistan. Im
not sure of why you would say that, I swore off looking at

I really dont think most of the guns being used for
drive-bys here are legally registered. Its not like you can
walk into Seven Eleven and pick up an AK-47 with your
morning coffee.

I was in Venice Beach when a guy pulled a gun and started to
take shoots at rival gang members. Its a pretty common
things in California. In Laguna two month's ago I was eating
at a resteraunt and there was a guy who robbed a hotel, and
shot at the police and got killed. I think its all part of
living in the US and California, your going to run into that
kind of thing at least once in a while. When you see a gun,
run for safety thats what I say, or get a gun license of
your own (I am applying for my license to carry a gun around
in public legally, been shoting at the gun galleries for
about a year now).

Unbelievable...
After reading this thread i promised myself i wouldn't say
anything unfriendly about americans, but this...

Do you really think getting your own gun is going to solve
anything? That's just adding to the problem. Don't you see
it's got to stop somewhere! Now someone will one day
see you carrying a gun around and think: "holy shit...
everyone has a gun these days... i need one too!"

And sure that's easy for me to say, safely here in the
netherlands where i've never actually seen a gun been
fired... But i swear this is how the world is going to end.
Not with a big bang, but little by little, because no-one
realises it has to stop somewhere. You could end up killing
somebody, or getting killed yourself. God, i hope you were
joking. You can never be sure with mickey.

offline Mickey Mouse from The Moon on 2003-01-18 18:34 [#00519294]

I got my gun for self protection, no its not for solving
anything, its for protecting myself. I go to the gun gallery
twice a week practicing my marksmenship and train so that in
the case I am help up, or a situation were I am in danger of
my life, I can handle it. As I go into the downtown skid row
area almost at least 5 times a week now for my job, a place
where EVERYONE has a gun. This is an unvelievable concept
for you because you live in a safe area and have no exposure
to violence surrounded. When your living in it day to day
where I work and live, you need protection. I have seen
people being raped, shot at, and once even killed. So dont
preach to me on your soap box, not until you see it first
hand what its like here in the states. Practice gun safety
and be cafefull and have a gun safe at home, the people who
dont practice gun safety or dont have a clue abot guns, are
usually the ones who get hurt.

I am not kidding

I could see how you could be nervous going downtown.
Especially main st. But isnt a gun a little excessive? Are
you using it as a deterent or as an actually weapon? I think
pepper spray could do the trick. If youre worried about the
other guy having a gun. you might as well give him your
wallet, rather than start a shoot out. thats just my opinion
though. If a concealed weapon makes you feel safer then you
are clearly in your rigth to carry one.

More of a deterent dolleater, I got a big can of pepper spay
in my POS (piece of shit) car. I am a good shot, and have a
quick draw so I am not really worried about getting in a
shoot out. Hopefully I will be changing jobs soon so I can
get out of downtown

Bashing americans? Please. I understand your suffering, but
let's make it clear: crime's everywhere. You're afraid of
getting shot, and I'm afraid of a bunch of 'skinheads' (as
they call themselves, they really just go and kill or beat
everyone with not-purely-white skin and/or listening to some
foreign music and/or 'dressed like a nigger') to bash my
head against the wall. Or, what is more, I'm afraid of our
fucking police. They're worse. Once a friend of mine fell
unconscious on the street (a diabetic strike or something),
and the guys drag him to their police station and beat him
up so he pissed blood, and let him go only after his sister
came and paid lots of money. Just because he was lying on
the street, they thought they can do whatever they want to
him. Or they can stop ppl and put them to cage and hold
there until they get paid. So shut up about LA, hell is
everywhere. I feel really bad about it bothering you though,
I thought life in America was more safe or at least more
pleasant... I mean, Moscow is a dirtbag. Some really nice
people, and some really nice weather. But lots of scum. And
dirt. And scum.

It doesn't have anything to do with the life they live, so
why should they think about it for real. Most of these

I would hate to be in your shoes, lucky for NZ we have gun
control laws and mostly guns are used for hunting rather
than self protection. However there is casual violence as
you will find in countries that dont so much arm their
citizens. NZ's youth sucide rate could pertain percentage
wise to US gun deaths in population.

Having said that I buried my cousin Jeffrey who accidently
shot himself in the head whilst he was cleaning his gun. My
aunt had a nervous breakdown when the police suggested to
her that he committed suicide and still cant come to terms
with her sons loss.

My own FLEA was a victim of a racist attack here in NZ in
which he was beaten over the head 16 times with an iron bar
by a guy who was let off because he djed at the prison as a
community service. (b4 Sept 11)

My friend and neighbor Dirk was a Joy Division fan who hung

then.. . things can allways get a lot worse. ..

I obviously cant talk about these things from personal
