Does Europe take 9/11 seriously?

9/11 is undoubtedly the biggest thing to happen in my
lifetime. Although I'm a northernly neighbour to the US, I
think I understand just how profoundly it affected their
country. I think it has affected Canada pretty seriously as
well.

I was at school yesterday and this girl from Paris was
saying that 9/11 isn't that big of a deal to the rest of the
world. What do xltronicers from across the pond think?

well think about it, how often does the middle east
experience things like that. EVERY FUCKIN DAY! i live in
the u.s. and to me its a tragedy but it was inevitable. we
are not invincible and we are hated by many countries. it
was just a matter of time. you weren't expecting it?

Its a big thing here too.Its concerning for us.
To some people its a joke,I think thats because they're
jealous of such a powerfull nation.
10,000 people died that day.Thats serious IMO.

not really

well some do, those who are america-symphatetizers or have
relatives here. but mainly it's considered a horrible
tragedy but nothing over-the-top really, more people die all
over the world all the time due to much worse acts.

10,000 people dies today? are you talking about 9/11? i
don't recall that many deaths. im sorry but when the u.s.
tries to play god of the world, just as in religion, lots of
people won't follow along.

I think the attack was to show the U.S is not
undefeatable, but to get over something like that is truly
undefeatable.

its good to feel bad, but you must realize to most people in
the world that is life. what if it was a mandetory thing to
have a bomb shelter in ur house. or walk down the street
and see buildings that have been bombed and people walking
around with ak's all the time. we could get bombed again
and its till nuthing compared to most.

Sure i take it "seriously", in the sense that i find it
terrible so many people died in the disaster.

But in general i think america has overreacted... with all
that talk about "the world has changed forever" and blah
blah. Like other people in this thread i say: thousands of
people die in tragedies like this all over the world... but
nobody cares (or at least not as much as they care about the
9-11 victims). Because in the eyes of the media, americans
are the most important people in the world.

On the 4th of december 2002, the world food program of the
united nations announced that Africa in the very near
future, will have forty million people (that's
40.000.000 human beings) who don't have any food left
to survive (due to the extreme dryness). This could develop
into the biggest disaster that has ever happened to Africa.

It's things like this, that put 9/11 into perspective for
me. Instead of "fighting terrorism", Bush could use
all that money to supply Africa with food.
(and ofcourse Africa's hunger-problem is only one of the
many fucked up things happening in the world).

Bin Laden considered the US a threat and 9/11 was his
preemptive strike at a legitmate military target.

look..... less than 100 yuears ago the world had more civil
strife and famines etc than it does now. We are better off
and its all due to WW2, the emergence of superpowers, the
stabilising of economies, the securing of oil deals for that
stability.. like it or not. America emerged as a key player
in these things, and since the cold war is over, it is the
only effective dominant force on the planet and thank fuck
its in some way moral and just.

The only bloody problem, is its aarogance and double
standards and basically it needs a decent PR team to sell
its ethics abroad.

We actually fucking need the bastards to scare off child
like nations such as Korea and Iraq (i´m talking about
their government, not the people or cultures)

As for Africa etc........ it´ll take a while but it needs
the west assisance also, but again... i bet there are far
less dead now than 100 years ago. Its tricky because with
education and self determination comes the lessing of
americas role as caretaker and as these countries take care
of themsekves and their economies they will need this "big
brother less" structures could occur where America will not
be able to interefere and many more could die......

Well said- whilst it's not without its faults, having a
ruling superstate is good for most countries. You need
someone to keep people like the North Korean govt. in
check.

Again whilst it might not be doing "enough" to help other,
developing, countries it is at least providing some aid.

Just because things are better now than they were a 100
years ago... doesn't mean things are perfect now.

I can agree with most of what you're saying... but:

"The only bloody problem, is its aarogance and double
standards and basically it needs a decent PR team to sell
its ethics abroad.
"

I think this proves America's "ethics" are not very clean or
nice. If they did the right thing, the world would agree
with America without the help of a PR-team.

Whereas the right-wing conservative thinks that we are
"liberating" those other countries, the people of those
other countries view the U.S. as an aggressor Imperialist
country bent on destroying, pilfering, plundering and
subjugating their country. And ultimately, installing a U.S.
puppet gov't that ignores the people of that country and
instead follows Washington D.C. blindly and wrongly to the
detriment of the people of the other country, ALA the Shah
of Iran.

If Bush is right, and the U.S., with the most powerful
conventional army ever in history, needs nuclear weapons,
then the North Koreans would be foolish not to develop their
own. the North Koreans want national security too

Okay... i think you've made a good point :-) i've never
looked at America like that before...

"hmm, these guys have a tough responsiblity and they
really screwed up there and there but in general, they are
doing pretty well so far... cos jesus those humans eain´t
half trigger happy over religion and land and shit...."

Yes, exactly. It is a big responsibility, and i guess we
should be happy it is America that is the most powerful
country in the world. (imagine what the world would look
like if it was a country run by some dictator).

But even so... i still think it is a good thing to ask as
many questions as possible, and never trust Bush blindly
because "he will probably make the right decision."

Actually it does scare me that he is the most powerful man
in the world... he seems really eager to start fighting. I
saw that newspaperphoto where he visited his troups and
become all emotional. He just loves his army... and i
bet he's looking forward to welcome those heroes back home
after they've won the war. I think he has a rather romantic
idea of war... the kind of idea you see in some war-movies.
And yeah... i find that frightening. I trusted America more
when Clinton was still in charge.

the USA has to realise that there is a "rest of the world",
and they might not actually WANT american culture and
influence forced upon them. 911 was really bad, but it was
only really a matter of time before something happened,
mainly due to the foreign policy.it wouldnt have been as big
a deal if 3000 people died somewhere in a LEDC (less
economically developed country) i think...what about all the
other countries which only get a passing reference. UK=IRA,
spain=ETA, isreal=PLO(i think its called)
palestine=isreal,etc.

Blah blah blah get a life. 9/11 was serious shit, the States
deserved nothing. Islamic fundamentalists and middle eastern
loony states have been pursuing their terror campaigns

Fair point but its the way it happened. Besides it won't
happen again because the next time one of those loony fucks
boards a plane to cause havock the passengers will tear him
apart (literally) so I think it'll be the terrorist who
suffers next time. They had one shot with 9/11 thats it
they've shot their bolt so to speak. So to exceed that
they'll have to do something more dramatic God knows what,
thats why I can honestly appreciate the States going after
unstable countries which have a nucleur arms agenda or which
harbour or support terrorists.

Good point. One death is a tragedy, 3000 deaths is a
statistic.

12000 Americans kill each other with firearms each year.

promo, you sound like a loyalist paramitilary. The thing
you're not seeing is that these people have the conviction

What the fuck has got the conviction to die for their cause
got to do with it? Hardly a life worth living if you're just

contribution do these pyshos actually make to the world.
