As some of you would know as N.E.R.D.

There was an argument on why they werent nominated for
producer of the year on the Grammy nominations this past
week.

They've produced songs like:
Justin Timberlake "Like I love you"
Busta/P.Diddy "Pass the Courvoiser"
Mystikal "Bouncin' back (bumpin me against the wall"

This shows what bullshit shows like the
Grammy..emmys..people choice are.

Its obvious Neptunes are fucking awesome and they sell more
albums and have their names all over other artist albums and
they dont even get recognized.

When I get into music business I'm gonna be the Iconoclast
everyone needs to turn shit around!

"You think I give a fuck about a Grammy? / Half of these
critics can't even stomach me, let alone stand me."

like, seriously, if the neptunes are going to bug out about
being overlooked for a grammy, what about dj premier,
alchemist, da beatminerz, rza, automator, prince paul,
timbaland, buckwild, muggs, dj shadow, el-p, the
soulquarians, kanye west, hedrush, large professor, dj
spinna, madlib, beatnuts, hi-tek, etc.! like the grammy's

I hope one day, they will release all these productions on a
Neptunes-compilation or something like that. That would be
sweet. Some of these tunes are so incredible... but if i
would buy the entire albums from Justin Timberlake and
Britney Spears and all those... i doubt if i would enjoy
those all the way through...

That Pass The Courvoiser-song is just incredible! I can't
stop smiling whenever it's on tv. The video is real funny
too... when they get in a fight with that big woman... Busta
steps on her pinky toe, and P Diddy says: "yeah! That's what
i'm talking about!"

Lol, it's so childish :-p But that always cracks me up.

the neptunes are incredibly quick witted and excellent
producers - in search of nerd is excerllent and that justin
timberlake track is a great michael jackson update - as was

seriously - i mean some of you even like nine inch nails :)

i don't think much would be left of them in that case? I
think it's easy to hear the neptunes write their tracks with
vocals in mind. I bet they'd sound very dull and empty
without...?

By the way that N*E*R*D-album is damn hard to find! I was
kinda hoping every major musicstore would have it on stock,
but no... haven't seen it anywhere yet.

errr you sorta have the idea... you're right about most of
these IDM brats being funkless, unable to enjoy a good
groove let alone lyrics and singing/rapping. but what's with
the fucking nine inch nails beef? you really negate anything
you have to say about being in tune with different types of
music when you write off trent after hearing, what, 3 songs?
there's a reason reznor is taught in contemporary music

neptunes created some sort of new type of beats.
n.e.r.d., kelis, all the others. I can almost recognize a
neptunes beat by now. and I have to admit I'm getting a bit
tired of it. I'm more into the dirty unfinished-like beats
by rza.
check the ghost dog ost for example.

I haven't liked RZA's recent output. Either under or over
produced...and he really does need to sort out the people he
has rapping over them.

I think El-P passed RZA a long time ago, but he will never
get the recognision because he is a white boy :)

His work on his own album was amazing, but the Cannibal Ox
album had some of the best hiphop beats I have heard in my
whole life.

neptunes have an awesome style but to be truthful, they owe
a lot to one of their idol groups: stereolab. especially on
that n*e*r*d album.

i think el-p gets plenty of recognition... he's quite
popular. i'd love to hear some *cough* black rappers rhyme
over some of his music (other than just mr. lif). his tracks
would slaughter the radio, for real.

sadly i agree about mr. robert digges, not many good rza
productions these last couple years...

Look people there's no other group like Neptunes you all say
you can know its them when you hear a song...I believe that
because its a good, funk, jamming sound..I listen to hip hop
and theres nothing good since Method Mans "Tical"

Ever rap artist sounds the same, has the same beats or
steals beats...those songs that you can listen to and enjoy
it without my bitch is my hoe and my babies mama is just
plain good listen'...Enjoy different sounds--it seems like
we have a tie on like and disklikes but those with the
dislikes of N.E.R.D seem to be saying the samethings and
those who are comparing NIN are going off on some tangent
that I can't seem to understand

damn the new demos are scorching.. go to the audio section
of this site (you need a free user/password first) to
hear 'em. "you're a star" is the song heard briefly at the
very end of in search of. this version is a raw
acoustic demo, very nice. "locked away" is another unmixed
demo, very swing-like with neptunes flourishes. also on the
site are some awesome remixes (zero 7's "provider", trent
reznor's "lapdance") and rarities ("find a way" from a
french soundtrack).

I love the neptunes.. but it seems they've chosen to keep
their production in a stagnant state.. because artists pay
to have a beat that'll sell, one that sounds almost exactly
like that whihc has already sold, they use the exact
instrumentation as on previous 'efforts'.. I think to myself
sometimes.. the music is good , but w/ the amount of money
these guys made in the last two years (they have been
EVERYWHERE) you'd think they'd spice things up a little bit.
the ubiquitous neptunes sound is immediately recognizable ..
and you can even tell which beats were made when based on
the chords used, sounds employed, etc in the track (e.g.
ll's "love u better" and jay-z's "excuse me miss" .. or
"pass the covousier" and "like I love you").. I liked the
vibe from a lot of in search of.. but they really need some
lyrical help on a lot of tracks. .. you can tell these guys
are real artists though, they have good taste and it's quite
odd that they and [the now extremely watered-down] timbaland
[whose output is now a mere fraction of what it was a few
years ago when he wasnt in demand like he is now] are so
vastly embraced by a pop culture that regressed back to the
boy band era about 4 years ago.

(where did you read that pharell-getting-head thing?)

by the way, the Timbaland-produced "What's The Differece" by
Ginuwine (don't worry, this was from when Timbaland was an
artist.. it's okay, really) was one of the first 3 tracks of
his that really got me into him.. check that one

I dunno if somebody mentioned this, but in order to be
eligable for a Grammy nomination the details of potential
nominees have to be submitted to the board prior to
selection.

No body sent the details in for the boys, hence they weren't
eligable to be in the running for the award.

theo, you might get a little repetitive too if you had to
churn out 200+ songs a year (and that's released, not just
incomplete tracks no one will ever hear). in order not to
drive themselves mad they save their best ideas for
themselves (n.e.r.d.), their close associates (kelis,
clipse, spymob, and others on their star trak label), and
favorite artists/best friends in the industry.

where did you read that pharell-getting-head thing?

some interview on a neptunes fan site.. kid is nuts about
stereolab (also steely dan, america, and some other
seemingly "unlikely" bands)

"what's so different?" is amazing, i loved timbo's late 90s
output. most recently his tracks on the latest jay-z album
were superb too ("the bounce" especially). i don't think he
turned in his best work on the last missy album, which is
really surprising considering they're friends of 20 years. i
hear that the timberlake productions were his best in the
last year or so but i haven't gotten around to downloading
justified yet.

braindance: you'd think virgin (n.e.r.d.'s label) would've
nominated, or all those artists (ahem.. britney) the neps
made millions for..

that are clearly effortless retreads.. although they up
their effort a bit whenever a name backed by big money is
requesting their services

as workers for hire i doubt the neptunes really care about
every artist they work with.. most of their "productions"
are just previously made instrumentals passed on by other
artists. as for their reputation, that's what N.E.R.D. is
for.. the neptunes is just a name associated with hits,
N.E.R.D. is them. they don't need to be respected as workers
for hire.. they just want to make millions, make good
relationships with artists they admire/respect (common,
jay-z, etc.), and have fun.

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-03-11 19:42 [#00590970]

yeah.. they even know that some of their beats really arent'
THAT good.. I just saw something recently on MTV where
pharell was saying that ''sometimes we give someone a beat,
and they're like.. 'what is this!?''' then his asian friend
chimed in with 'because it sounds like doo-doo!'.. but then
he said they end up happy because it sells and ends up all
over the radio.. they also showed them in the studio and
chad hugo was playing this really nice acoustic guitar...
why dont they use that? they constantly use that tired,
cheap "guitar sound" casio type sample on everything.. it's
still good but it would be great with a more organic sound

speaking of common/neptunes did you notice pharell singing
backup to the mary j blige part?

and should the reznor remix of lapdance even qualify as a
remix?? what did he do to it?

they do use guitar as of last year.. some artists feel it,
some don't. it's not like the neps are gonna say "you don't
like this guitar? fuck you, i'm out." they'll just take it
out of the mix or use another instrumental and save the
better one for someone else who gets it.

yea i noticed pharrell's singing on "come close" the first
time i heard the actual cd... really nice.

reznor remixed the original, programmed version of
"lapdance" so yea it was mostly reperformed from scratch...
i'm sure his version gave them a good idea on how the live
instrument version of in search of should sound, especially
that track.

I just listened to the entire track.. I hadn't before.. I
see his contribution now

they use guitar now yes, but even now they still use the
cheap synthetic sounds for earlier tracks.. maybe they're
clearing out their harddrives and giving some people older
tracks? ahah

I actually own both versions of that in search of.. album..
and there's one beat used in an interlude after "tape you"
that I remember being particularly nice.. have you heard
both versions? some of the de-spymobbed versions are better

yea i downloaded the original when it leaked out in summer
2001.. i think i prefer the new version for every track but
lapdance. and as for the neps, again, they're workers for
hire.. if the artist doesn't want a track w/ live guitar
then it won't be used. doesn't matter if it's fresh or old.
did you download "you're a star" yet? you'll recognize that
melody...
