mac vs. pc musicly

dosl on 2001-09-13 07:21 [#00031321]

every warp show i've been to the artists have been running
mac laptops, always the sleek titanium Ibooks.. one reason i
can see thses being alot better than pc laptops is because
the macs have a 128k address/data bus as opposed to the pc
32k add/data bus.. another thing is for music production in
live situations i would suspect macs to be much more stable
than a pc for the task.

anyone else have speculations?

BURP

I dont know but I have made the same observation with any
live IDM i've seen. I guess its because Macs are better
than PCs for crunching audio and video...nothing more
nothing less.

dosl on 2001-09-13 07:30 [#00031337]

some of the artists i've seen, particularily a guy named
Slicker (quite good) seemed like his mac was just doing the
playing of the bits of beats while he was doing alot of knob
twiddling and other hardware toggling... more like he was
just using them as midi controls on effect-outs from the
beats.

It also occurs to me that many idm artists use Max/MSP for
their audio graphic interfaces, if you are familiar with the
program. That is Mac-Only software.

macs are better period.
if i want to play games, i'll play my ps2.

NIGHTY NIGHT.

Not too sure about that question! I guess a mac is a bit
better equipped for music, but its nothing extra you
couldn't put on a PC. It does seem a bit trendy at the
moment to ditch microsoft based systems for Mac based (I can
completely understand this).

-BUT- remember there both as unreliable as each other!

Have fun.

Macs are shit. They are more expensive, and not as strong.
The reason IDMers all seem to use it, is because a lot of
great sound programs are written for macs. Why? Because all
the schools have macs. Why? Because there is a discount
available for schools that buy macs. There is not the same
offer for PC's. Anyone I talk to that know anything about
computers, laughs at how many musicians use macs, because
they aren't as good.

Baisically, you can get a lot of great programs for the PC.
Reactor, Cubase, Fruityloops, Audiomulch, etc etc etc. are
written for both macs and PCs.

Thats what I have to say. Take it or leave it.

I know my information isn\'t firsthand, but the person I got
most of it from is one of the best people in the industry.
They travel all over north america servicing large (and
small) systems for various companies. They work with both
Mac\'s and PC\'s.

They put all their faith in PC\'s. They don\'t personally
like bill gates or Microsoft, and don\'t believe in any of
their company polocies. But they also thought macs were
second class computers.

If macs do become \'the next big thing\', it wil be from
flashy packaging. Not from preformance.

fluffy bunny from G4 vs AMD on 2001-09-13 13:13 [#00031451]

I am a proud owner of a G4 MP533 beast.. my flat mate
sports a 900 AMD machine which he was pretty proud of at the
time. It is currently experiencing some major troubles (ME)

We both fuck around with audio stuff ..

Come crunch time, audio processing on cubase/protools - /
ripping mp3's etc... the speed difference is absolutely
clear cut = the mac is faster.

With regards to stability i am experiencing no problems!

macs are soo much better. i'm dying for one. i hate my pc.
crashes all the time and shit. fuckin windows.

and i'm ont up for learning how to program linux to get a
stable system.

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-09-13 23:15 [#00031613]

Im on Windows XP now, its pretty fucking fast but I can't
play Diablo II, it always crashes...

And I can't print because there is no driver for my printer
available yet on XP, real annoying

Ryman from Washington on 2001-09-14 01:20 [#00031628]

I definately think macs are the way to go if youre a graphic
artist and a musician like me......But Pc's are way better
for games and stuff like that, I dont care for that stuff so
I got a mac!

MACS ALL THE WAY!!!

fluffy bunny from easter on 2001-09-14 01:23 [#00031629]

Yeah .. I mean if you want a word processing game machine
where you can download lots of cracks and that.. .windows is
the way to go .. but if as you say above you are going for
number/gut/audio crunching power, reliability etc.. Mac is
the way to go

((>e.V.o.L.u.M.e<)) from cold and balmy seattle on 2001-09-14 01:40 [#00031631]

i used a mac exclusively for music but since i have moved
out of my band-mate's house, i have been using a p.c.

i really liked the mac. the sampling was cleaner and the
machine was faster, but i had a lot of problems with
crashing. also, i could never get used to the one button
mouse. i used protools and digital performer as well as
medisynth and a few other programs on the mac.
I use P.C. now because i have always had a P.C. for gaming
and i figured i might as well start music on it. i think it
is also fucking great in that it is far more reliable. i run
Acid, soundforge, fruityloops, a shitload of plugins and a
couple other bits and pieces on it with out ever crashing.

for live stuff however, the mac is deffinately better. a way
to use a p.c. live is to have a lot of ram.

if you want to run a p.c. i would say do not buy a packaged
system like compaq or dell or whatever. build your own
system or find someone who knows what they are doing and get
their help. build it to tailor your own needs. THIS IS
CRITICAL!! this is also is one major strength of P.C.'s; i.e
customizability (is that a word?)

anyway, both are great machines if you know what your are
doing and have a clear idea of how you are going to use it.

I used to make all my stuff with a PC whihc I loved.. I
liked the creative platinum card with all its ins and outs
and opticals and what not..
but now haved moved onto hardware mainly, or am trying to.
maybe use it to convert music to mp3's some sequencing and
making CD's

Barrett, Syd from Toronto on 2001-09-14 04:38 [#00031673]

reflex, as soon as you have your G4, tell me. cause i'll

i'll buy one as well! cause... uh.... i'm your bitch from
