worst Warp release?

I'd have to say: The Other People Place -
Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe

This album is pure shit. Repetitive and boring beyond
belief. Two thumbs down Warp. I feel cheated for buying it.

Jimi Tenor: Out of Nowhere. Definitely. That was a pile of
poo.

Most of their releases are average or shit, particularly
over the past couple of years.

they certainly have alot of weak shit don't they,
fortunately i haven't bought any

Warp is mostly bland techno-house music, although they have
their all-stars, such as Aphex, Squarepusher, AE, Plaid, &
Brothomstates. The other artists that are signed don't show
the same aspect of music as they do.

??What a strange thing to say...

therefore, flea-man, your strange use of question-marks is
understandable.

just having 5 of the "IDM supastars" (HAHA) should be quite
enough for any label.

Yes they may have the big names, but it is not much good
having the big names unless they release good music. The
number of albums being released is dropping, and dare I say
it, the quality of the albums they do release is lower than
it ever has been. (btw I don't buy into this "contract
ending" bullshit)

any other label "better" than WARP then?

I think there are weak releases, but the good titles are so
big, that easily there is no other label that can surpass
WARP achivements

look to the smaller labels if you hold an interest in the
genre. warp is just holding up the front-end of the genre..
it was revolutionary in it's time.. but now it's releases
are largely commercial

rephlex, mu, tigerbeat.. start there :]

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2002-12-30 07:01 [#00495213]

to call Warp commercial is a bit much. they're still small
in comparison to real commercial labels.

anyway, richard devine is on schematic, and I agree with
Clic - schematic is a more interesting label at the moment.

still, anybody listen to the warp 2003 demo? I d/l the 54 Mb
mp3 (!) last night - haven't listened to it yet. (it can be
d/l from the Tefosav site - there is a link in a thread on
the Planet Mu phorum..)

Squarepusher said that since LFO frequencies Warp produces
shit.
Its a bit strong...
I agree with weatherred, Laptop café is boring. The rumour
says that the album was done by a guy from Underground
Resistance. Now i understand why its shit...

For me jimi tenor is cool.

He does, and he hates it. Thats why he started up Rephlex -
so he wouldn't help out a bunch of no name, no talent
artists.

^^not exactly as he put it, but close enough

Yeah, imho Warp is more commercial than, say, Mu, but this
doesn't mean hat they produce shit. They just HAVE to
produce things that set curent music stream - and, in some
way, they follow the stream themselves. Look at this
'satanstornade' shit - Warp just HAD to pay attention to
growing noize interest; Mu didn't - Mike just presses what
he wants.

Warp is good and _important_, but small labels also rule.

warp is small, it is by no means a huge or mainstream
labels. anyways, theres a bunch of crap on it but i like a
lot of it, autechre, 2 lone swordsmen, mira calix, aphex, go
plastic(dont like any other release of his), prefuse73, boc
and some other stuff im forgetting probably.

if you guys actually heard arrythmia, vocal studies,
sketchbook, or double figure. you guys act like warp has
signed the chemical brothers and are aiming at the top of
the charts. pull the stick out of your asses. it's ok to
prefer one label's output to another's, but stop the
melodrama.

that mp3 is the whole mix, but it's not at 320. It's VBR and
at a lower quality VBR than the version I uploaded to

Warp has been around for a long time. Chances are they'll
still be there 10 years from now. I've seen lots of good
labels disappear without a trace but Warp keeps going on.

The DJ Maximus - Armani Versaci EP

I agree with that. That is the worst fucking piece of shit
I've ever heard on Warp. Fuck knows why they released it.

Warp is the only label I consistently buy from. Dipping into
other labels - ESPECIALLY REPHLEX - disappoints much more
often than Warp. I've bought probably about 30 or 40 CDs
from Warp, and only about 3 of them are what I'd describe as
poor.

the other people place was a side project of drexcya..
its not my favorite album.. but its nice for what it is.. a
detroit style ambient techno album

and you wont have to worry about him releasing any more
'repetitive and boring albums' ..he's dead now

and yeah..i've always thought this whole warp bashing thing
was kinda lame...
if it werent for warp... most of these smaller labels
probably wouldnt be around today..
hell, they even helped richard and grant start rephlex

people are so paranoid about the music going 'mainstream'
..sure, warp's artists have gotten the most exposure.. and
theyre the most successful label in the genre.. its not like
theyre BMG or something...

because they've put out such high quality stuff far more

I'd have to say for me most of the music I've got comes from
probably 2 labels, Warp and Rephlex. I think those who are
perhaps new to this music may not appreciate the older stuff
from both labels but those who've lived through both will
understand. For me Clear Records use to be an excellent
record label as well but they just dissappeared over night.
So although Warp are still number 1 for me and I would say
Rephlex a very close second there were/are other labels that
I rate highly to, like Clear, R&S, Rising High, Planet-Mu
etc etc.

geezus... some of you are never happy... what the hell do
you want? some sort of fantasy label? at least in theory,
most of Warp's releases are quite valid and worthy of
release.

anyway... Warp has to sell some records if they are going to
survive, and are allowed to try to please different
tastes... at least they never put out any Trance megamixes.
they have been about as successful as possible (and pretty
much without precident) without pandering overly to
commercial trends, or being just mainly a "one artist" with
followers label.

Mira Calix I've heard I was expecting big things. I don't
want to be offensive but I get the feeling it was just a
case of tokenism. Personally it has to be some of the
weakest stuff I've heard on Warp. I may need to listen to it
a few more times because it seems like the jury is out on
this one.

offline Mickey Mouse from The Moon on 2002-12-31 15:51 [#00496738]

I like one or two tracks by Mira Calix, but the rest I just
cant get into.... and I have her ep and her full length
now.... and givin it many listens... I just dont dig it, its
not my thing.

I think its pretty marginal stuff for warp, and I am sure
she had some help from sean ... but I guess its neat to see
a girl make some IDM tunes, I dig that aspect of it, but her
music is lacking, this is all just IMO. please dont take
offense

The mira calix stuff is much underrated in my opinion.
People seem to be almost eager to slag her stuff off. It's
really not terrible at all.

Sparse minimalist electronic is fine when it's Autechre, but
done by a woman?!? and she's obviously sponging off her
hubby, oh yes. < /sarcasm >
