Everyone's favorite pussy Goth-pop band. Who loves 'em?

I think Robert Smith is a minor genious, he can write a
catchy tune at will. I like their REALLY early stuff better
than their late 80's heyday though... Imaginary Boys, Boys
Don't Cry, Faith, and especially Seventeen Seconds. Nice
sparse production, rawer with less keyboards. Pornography is
overrated.

Sure, if you want them to. I haven't heard too much D Mode
yet, but I'm getting into them... I'm on a early 80's pop
rock binge... Smiths, Cure, New Order... I can't stop
bopping.

the cure happen to be one of my faves..
yes, their later stuff is popy..did you hear that robert's
releasing a new album? he should pack it in..sorry to say,
it's sounding bad and that's not how he should be
remembered.

Throw all the shitty labels you want on them. They're a
great band that makes great music, end of story.

Robert Smith is not a MINOR anything, he is sooooo good.
he's been making music for years and years and has yet to
disappoint!

i saw this wonder show with him (much music in canada) and
he was smiling and happy and he said he never thought he'd
make it to 40 and be happy. and he was glad he was both. he
found his peace, and i'm really glad. i think his music is
inventive, fun, and haunting......and boy seeing them in
2000 was one of the best shows EVAH!

Siouxsie's album Hyaena, with Smith on guitar and keys, is
her best ever. Not so crazy about The Cure, but wow, did
mister Smith ever add something special to that album.

He's definitely a genious, I just said ''minor'' cuz I don't
put him up there with Lennon and Dylan and Hendrix, those
guys... but he's still amazing. There aren't many people I
consider ''minor geniouses!''

Hey Ophie: if you like the Cure make sure you check out
Hednoize who did some producing for them

Also Depeche Mode's best album is Ultra.

The first two Cure records suck.
Depeche Mode's best record is Violator. I've been a fan of
theirs since I started listening to music.

I would have to agree with DM's best album being "
Violator"...Either that one or DM101

As for the Cure's first album...splendid, absolutely
splendid. And they only GET BETTER

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2002-12-26 23:20 [#00492334]

I don't agree. Wild Mood Swings is kinda sketchy.
Bloodflowers is spot on though.

My fave Cure albums are their first two... I like the
production. Reminds me of Joy Division, especially the bass
playing and beats.

And I agree on Violator... I've heard most of that and it's
dang good.

offline IronLung from the 91fwy in soCAL (United States) on 2002-12-26 23:23 [#00492336]

Wild Mood Swings is kinda hard to digest at
first...especially after something like Wish....

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2002-12-26 23:23 [#00492338]
Points: 1955 Status: Lurker

ALso, check out Violator b-sides: Happiest Girl, Sea of Sin,
Dangerous, Memphiso, Siebling.

I just don't get into the old stuff apart from boys don't
cry. Faith is great, though.

offline Spookyluke from United States on 2002-12-26 23:25 [#00492342]

I think Wild Mood Swings has its highs and lows. The good
stuff is great, but the bad stuff is annoying. Club
America, particularly.

The trouble is it's dangerously close to ska/really awful
jazz. His lyrics are also (at times) plain and impersonal.

heres my view on the cure, their pop shit (which is most of
their albums) sucks

the trilogy is the best by them and you should know which
albums im talking about (disitegration, pornography and
bloowflowers)

I refuse to refer to them as a trilogy. I think Robert
Smith just thought, "Maybe if I say it goes with the two
most popular records, people will like it." I think they're
three records, okay. They will never be a trilogy to me
though.

Saw the cure this summer at the arvika festivalen. It was
kind of boring, or it was just to cold =)

The music is good but i think that he should lay of with the
makeup and stuff. He's like 40 now?

"2 most popular records" wtf? umm theyre most popular ones
are the ones with all the crap radio singles on em,the cure
is split into two categories no matter how you look at it,
the radio cure songs and the ones that were meant to be
apart of an album not a collection of songs.

The first line of Ophecks' original thread still bothers me
as much as it did six months ago when I first replied to
this. Why insult the band and their fans then try to praise
them? This really didn't need to be brought back up, ashbrg.

It was a sort of... joke... you know, kidding around kind of
thing? Not totally serious? Satire? Irony? Don't be so self
concious. I myself am a pussy Goth-poppy gayboy, but I can
laugh at myself. God knows, everyone else does. :_-(

*begins to weep, and thus, puts on Seventeen Seconds

That's bullshit. You're just trying to make fun of yourself
before anyone else can. You're the one who's self-conscious.
There's no need to be ashamed about liking The Cure. All
you're doing is perpetuating a stereotype and branding any
fan of theirs a pussy/goth/pop fan. If that's what you think
when you listen to them, maybe you should grow up and try
again in a few years.

you know, i really don't think it is such a big deal. it is
JUST a band, and it's JUST a stereotype, why can't we have
fun with it? besides, the cures fans are already so fucked
with this one, there is no way it will ever go away. hard
earned years of moping! lighten up. this isn't world work

''You're just trying to make fun of yourself before anyone
else can.''

Yeah, I thought I already established that fact...

''You're the one who's self-conscious.''

You got that right. No, really.

''There's no need to be ashamed about liking The Cure.''

Absolutely.

''All you're doing is perpetuating a stereotype''

Fair enough. I'm sure everybody here is mature enough to not
take my word as the Gospel though, they have their own
opinions on the Cure and their fans, I'm sure.

''and branding any
fan of theirs a pussy/goth/pop fan.''

No... I was just joking.

''If that's what you think when you listen to them, maybe
you should grow up and try again in a few years. ''

No... I was just joking. I know a lot of Cure fans who are
big and strong and so so assertive. Like you! They just
appeal to my sensitive side, that's why I like them,
personally.

Anyway, we routinely mock the IDM 'culture' and IDM geeks,
it's no biggie. We're all big boys and girls here, no harm
done. I guess I crossed the line today. *shrug
