Winamp

Winamp is what I swear by. Tons of skins and plug ins and
all around awesomeness. Preferably NOT Winamp 3, I've heard
it's not as good as Winamp 2...

My current skin is:

All the Aphex Twin skins suck horribly, totally unusable.

This one's brilliant, though. For all you Metroid geeks.

my problem is that with windows media sometimes the pc falls
down... it just dies and I have to reset... is that due to
something apart from some mistake in my media player?

That happens to me sometimes with other music programs. It's
best to use Winamp, much easier to use, and WMPlayer seems
to take up more CPU power... and it just sucks. Too many
useless features weighing it down.

Here's an example of one. There's 12 Aphex skins there, they
all suck, you can barely make out the buttons.

And there's only ONE Autechre skin... a bit better than the
Aphex skin, but still pretty ugly and user-unfriendly.

I personally like Windows Media Player...version 9 (the
newest one) is the best yet. True, it is a memory hog, but I
have few problems with it's stability.

The new WMA9 format is loads better than MP3, almost a third
smaller file sizes, and better quality at lower bitrates.

"better quality at lower bitrates" - this is true of
practically every newer, more technically advanced codec
introduced since mp3 (ogg vorbis, musepack, AAC), but does
it mean that Windows media is "loads better"? Nope.

It is when you have hundreds of CDs digitally captured on
your PC and it takes up 23GB with wma rather than 60GB with
MP3 :)

MP3 is good for convenience, but for personal use, WMA suits
me fine.

Plus, WMP9's new playlist features are neat - you can
generate playlists based on a number of criteria.

Doesn't really matter - whatever is best for you is what's
important.

Hopefully Windows Media 9 has improved the high-frequency
cutoff that was in 8. You might be in for a surprise if you
ever try to play your files on a decent stereo system (or
any 64 Kbps codec for that matter).

lossless compression is getting better these days as well,
hopefully sometime soon we wont have to re-archive our music
selection every couple years

Amen to that.
After that problem I've never looked at Mw format again,God
bless Winamp3(not 2)

my friend swears by ogg, do any of you agree it's the best?

quite many people swear on ogg. i don't notice real
difference but i believe.

Ogg is very very good, but I still think that lossless is
the answer, we're talking about overall quality gains that
range from a fraction of a percent to 1 or 2 percent with
each "revised" lossy compression format. Im going to keep
using lame vbr until a deadly lossless comes out, monkeys
audio is getting pretty good-seems to cut most files at
least in half

I don't think ogg is the best at anything - except for its
licensing requirements (none).

But it is not bad and should continue to improve and get
more support.
