Solaris = BAD!

i know this has been talked about before... but with the
new movie, Solaris, coming out, it reminded me of Photeks
aweful cd.

i then realized, that the CD, is in fact in reference to the
movie (with the water planet cover)

i put the CD in again, for the first time in probably a year
or something like that... hoping it was just me not "getting
it" at the time...

but no. its utter crap.

What happened to photek!?!?!?!? WHAT?!?!?!

well he was originally a house producer..The dark muscular
and brooding Photek was a side step...

but I will ask the same of Speedy J

what the hell happened on Loudboxer..

A Shocking Hobby is one of those perfect albums..and now
this :(

I´mm the same bout Solaris. after
"Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" i was expecting some banging clinical d n
b from Photek. Instead i got boring vocals and constant
repetitive beats...... YAWN!

Track 6? the one that goes yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah.... I like
that one. And the 'If that don't make you happy' one wasn't
so bad but it is a more poppy album. I got my copy for free
tho as it was a promo so I can't grumble too much.

I really want to see the original Solaris by the Russian
dude. But George Clooney is pretty hunky, wouldn't mind
seeing his version...

Photek, eh... indifference.

espicially since i met the dude who did the sound design for
the score for the new film.

Really, cool... What kind of soundtrack does the film have?
The original sounds pretty weird judging by the reviews...
pretty interesting.

its all like ambient, soundscapes.i think.

like, the guy, he designed the sounds used, and someone else
scored it. Hans Zimmer i think?

cause this guy works at hans zimmers studio: media ventures

but this guy is so amazing... 2 weeks after graduating
berklee, he got this job. his title is "Creative Sound
Designer and Composer" so he does sound desgins, some small
scoring, and is in charge of the studio (kinda like the
technitian)

hes been working there for like 2 years, and has worked on 7
films.

its cool, cause it gives me hope...
but its depresseing, cause im like, holy shit, i dont think
ill ever be that good.

he showed us a 2 min peice he wrote on csound (a musical
program (synth) that is alll done in code) for 2 mins of
music... it was 65 pages of written text! eek!

oh, and I know alot of people here liked the score to One
Hour Photo... this guy also did the sound design on that
movie.

hes like... freaking 24 or something ...and has worked on so
many movies, and is probably rich as a mofo. bah

Lucky bastard... I kind of thought it would be some weird
ambient or something, doesn't sound like a typical sci fi
movie.

he also did a segment on Traffic... the scene where micheal
D is in the helicopter, flying over the city, and catherine
zj is talking to her husband in jail.

he didnt do it all, but he helped write that section.

fuck. this guy is like my idol.

it's "Cliff Martinez" mate, and he's bloody great isn't he.
I'm pretty sure he did some other tracks on the TRAFFIC
soundtrack too which are awesome ambient pieces

I saw the original Solaris on Finnish TV, about two years
ago or something. It's very weird and, me being on holiday,
I didn't watch the whole thing. I remember long sections
with no dialogue and some kosmonaut being questioned about
what he had experienced.

First I thought it was 2001, but then the VERY special fx
kicked in along with the Russian words and I was like, "they
copied 2001 for every communist to enjoy."

I have later learned, that was not the case.

penultimate!... transcendental style!... *mumbles off into

Solaris has one of the best soundtracks i've heard, the film
is excelent too... i think its one of those films that will
be regarded as a classic in the future.

I agree.

the Tarkovsky "solaris" blows the soderbergh "solaris"
away.

tarkovsky takes the philosophical/metaphysical route, while
soderbergh goes for psychology.

not literally, I would say.

solaris is a living planet that can read minds and create
matter out of itself, it would seem.

it recreates what you want there to be. in first instance it
does this to communicate with human beings. it never becomes
clear what it wants.

what? are you blowing off his observation?

i dont think the planet is alive... i think its heaven.
thats where clooney and his wife go to.

YEAH MAN, I'M DISSING MARTIJN!!!

:P

no, I'm saying that's his interpretation.

all the facts that the film gives describe what I said.

all the rest is what you want to see yourself.

I don't know whether it can be seen as heaven. the people
start living in their memories - maybe they are happier that
way, but it's also kind of sad. which is exactly what I
like, btw - it's not an easy choice.

like I said, this is more clear and poignant in the original
Tarkovsky "solaris", I think.

to me the films are not about "heaven" or anything like
that, but about the choices you make in life, in how far
fate exists, acceptance of mistakes (or not) and most
important: memory and how much your life and personality are
formed by it.

(also, I don't see it as where the Clooney-character and his
wife go, but where Clooney goes with a representation how he
remembers his wife. which can be a pretty important
difference.)

argh, leave my first name out of this

qrter has enlightened me too. i couldnt imagine a planet
just doing that without a reason or the story telling that
actually. so i thought it was a interpretation of heaven
somehow. which might be true. but first of all it's a planet
that.. (what qrter said)
