AB5/Melodies from Mars

Super Magnetic Neo from Australia on 2001-09-01 13:43 [#00028457]

Has there ever been a reason given why these albums where
never released?

I read somewhere giving the reason Richard did not want to
release something bad because he didn't want to upset his
fans, but I think he is upsetting his fans more not
releasing them :-) I doubt that reason is true.

Another possible reason was because some samples are
copyrighted, he didn't get permission and so he can't
release them. This seems more likely.

Though if it is correct about the copyrighted songs why not
release the tracks that arent copywrited?

I've heard samples from both and I love what I hear. I've
never seen anyone say these two albums are crap.

I'm sure a lot of people here would get a giant smile if
something like a 'Aphex Twin/AFX From the Vault! Melodies
from Mars and Analogue Bubblebath 5 double CD!' came out =D

I dont know. I think that he didn't want to release Melodies
From Mars because.. it wasn't meant to be released anyway,
it was simply for a gaming company, and they refused it.

AB5 - Richards once said that he didnt like this work of his
and didnt see it fit to be released officially at all....
left to gather dust, and be played in crappy mp3 format for
the rest of us. Its a decent one.

i was under the impression that melodies from mars was the
richard d james album demos/outakes?

Archrival from NY on 2001-09-01 16:24 [#00028473]

yeah I think so also.

No. Thats not true. The Melodies From Mars, was not really
an album to start with, as I said it was meant for the game
company as a introduction into his work, he would do for
them if hired, on the basis of that CD, which he did not do
{get hired}

Ah, now I understand :-)

Thanks for answering my question REFLEX.

I guess I'm going to have to download the MP3's :-)

I think both AB5 and MFM would have been very poopy
releases, better they weren't released...you people want
proof that RDJ isnt perfect and can write crap, here is your
proof, download if ye dare...only 3 or 4 songs came out of
these sessions that i consider decent, best being fingerbib,
which he realized and was smart enough to include on the RDJ
album...

i don't know, there's something about the half-finished
quality to AB5 that makes it that much more appealing. i
kinda enjoy the beauty of the fuzz over those tracks in the
same way that SAW1 is beautiful for its mangledness...

Joyrex from joyrex.com of course! on 2001-09-02 04:14 [#00028563]

Dave: the fuzz you hear is due to poor encoding of your MP3s
- the actual whitelabel is much clearer and crisper.

Neo and Reflex: MfM was released as a few C90 cassettes to
friends of Richard and WARP and Rephlex employees - the
whole video game company rumour thing is just that = a
rumour. MfM's tracks are 'leftovers' from his recording
sessions to create the RDJ Album - If you recall, he claimed
to have created over 150 tracks, and narrowed it down to the
few he used for the RDJA and the Girl/Boy EP. I hope this
helps you out. It's all minutae really, since the important
thing is the music - if you like it, that's all that really
matters, but it's sometimes nice to know the history behind
a release or a non-release in this case. Cheers.

Yeah, I was about to say myself the whole video game thing
is B.S.

Phobiazero from Sweden on 2001-09-11 13:01 [#00030691]

Netlon Sentinel:
No, it was not shite. I received your stuff (and some other
20 pictures). Pretty busy right now but it'll get online
a.s.a.p! :-)

aav from Sweden on 2001-09-11 13:28 [#00030693]

I dunno what would be bad about it, but what I've heard of
AB5 (5-6 tracks), it ROCKS. It contains some stuff and
structures not very typical to RDJ, and I love the way it's
executed. Just like the odd "Bummy" track on that
compilation.

Netlon Sentinel from morf no on 2001-09-11 20:48 [#00030825]

alright thanks very much for letting me know! i'll probably
create some more. if you like :)
