Selected Ambient Works Volume 3

Maytag from Durham, NH USA on 2001-08-31 11:50 [#00028172]

I may catch hell for this but I think Selected Ambient Works
Volume 2 is Richard's most important work. This music is
very spiritual and religious, invoking some very strange,
powerful and other worldly sensations if listned to in
isolation. I use the word important carefully, because I
think this music goes beyond just entertainment into a
transcendental experience. This is why I think a SAW V3
would be a great next direction for Richard. In a way
Melodies from Mars is almost SAW V3. Similar themes
throughout but light and bouncy like SAW V1. I think SAW V3
whenever it is done, should be even darker, weirder and
slower than SAW V2. SAW V2 reminds me of the "Jupiter and
Beyond" segment in "2001: A Space Odyssey" and really takes
you to other dimmensions and realms of reality if listened
to closely. SAW3 should take you even further out and in.
To the inside of and beyond a black hole to the nucleus of
an atom of a rock. I can only hope he feels so inclined to
do another even better SAW.

If you go to sleep with it on, you wake up feeling very,
very strange. I think this was when he was doing his 'lucid
dreaming' stuff, because all the tracks seem to sound like
weird dream soundtracks. They also make me very sleepy,
normally I get about three tracks in and I'm nodding
off..................

I would picture the next Ambient Works album to be almost
silence, with just a few abstract minimalist chords floating
in and out every few minutes or so. Tracks would last a
minimum of 15 minutes...

It will sound like "Gwety Mernans" and "Gwarek2"

No.. I dont think so.... or not my guess anyway. SAW III I
hope comes out.... SAWII is one of his cds I listen to the
least.. but enjoy the most when I do. Get me? Its a
wonderful cd... full of variety.. and yes.. it sounds very
"lucid".. fuct up stuff.

teapot from brisbane on 2001-08-31 18:47 [#00028269]

did anyone notice in the last episode of the Sopranos they
played SAW2 (track 7 i think) during the final credits?
it was awesome... good way to end the series...

(cliffs)=the first track from SAW2, is one of the greatest
songs I've ever heard. I just can't explain it with words.
That song is so powerful and intimate that I don't want to
listen it with somebody else. It's like the whole universe
exists within that 7-8 minutes.

PostModernVancouver from Vancouver, Canada on 2001-08-31 19:41 [#00028280]

Maytag I TOTALLY Agree with you!
SA 2 is filled with vibrations not from this world.
Its the deepest album I've ever heard, almost as if it were
biblical.
A lot of people take it as if it were just a bunch of long
droning sounds with no direction , but its exactly the
opposite.
Its brims with infinite mystery and is of cosmological
order.
To me its one of the most important pieces of work of the
20th century, a MASTERPIECE of the highest order.
I can listen to it 24/7 for days on end and get different
meanings, analyzations out of it every time I hear it...
This album is the album where Aphex should be considered the
21st century Mozart with the Mozart effect.
Eno, the Orb's works dont even come close to this..
As Reznor once said about this album...its a better Brian
Eno album then Eno himself has ever made, and I agree
fullheartedly..

"If the monolith in 2001: A space odyssey could communicate
this is what it would sound like"

I think this quote describes pretty well SAW 2.

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-09-02 06:58 [#00028612]

That's a fckin great quote.

I agree to me SAW and SAWII are almost spiritual, especially
tracks 1 and 3 on the first disk...maytag makes good points.

boxrocket on 2001-09-02 07:59 [#00028622]

this album is fucking fantastic. my favorite tracks are two
and five off the first cd (u.s. version). every time i hear
track five i get "bubbly" inside and kind of have the
feeling of being a fetus. or at least what i imagine a fetus
feels like. i listened to this album while going to sleep
one day and it fucked with my head pretty hard....it wasn't
very easy to handle.

Maytag from Durham, NH USA on 2001-09-02 09:22 [#00028645]

Even the albums packaging is epic and mysterious, with only
picture as titles and the size of the pictures representing
track length. "Stone in Focus", one of the two missing
tracks on the cd, is available still on a compilation cd but
unfortunately "Hankie" one of the eeriest tunes on the
album, can only be had be bootlegs. I would definitely pay
for a re-release of ALL the tracks and think one is in
order, in the way the 2001 "Surfing on Sine Waves" added two
tracks.

Evil Taxidentialist. from none on 2001-09-02 09:28 [#00028647]

SAW II is his best cd in my opinion.

cydonia from Skopje on 2001-09-02 10:59 [#00028672]

I just downloaded Stone In Focus from Audiogalaxy, and
that's one of the best tracks from SAW2. I already got an
idea of making a video for that song: One big stone in front
of the camera, and the song is playing...

Dave on 2001-09-02 21:42 [#00028775]

besides "stone in focus" and "hankie" are there any other
tracks on SAW2 not available on the Stateside CD?

orbit on 2001-09-03 06:10 [#00028846]

nope

|REFLEX| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-09-03 06:13 [#00028849]

Well - no. there are no other songs ....... thats it. SAWII
is good.

Bogus on 2001-09-03 06:15 [#00028850]

Have you tried the thing where you play both SAW2 discs at
the same time?

I've done it and it sounds interesting... completly
saturated of sounds but not unpleaseant, i tried it just
with the beginning of the disc 'cus if it was intentional it
wouldn't work as intended because of the tracks removed from
the cd.

orbit on 2001-09-03 06:22 [#00028851]

Have you tried both drukqs cds at the same time?? Freakin
Wicked!!!!

od from perth on 2001-09-03 08:19 [#00028883]

i think a good idea would be for phobiazero to set up a
competition where the entrants have to design a videoclip to
the tracks of saw2 (either for one track or the whole thing
or minus the 2 extra tracks...i dont have em neither)... i
made up some interesting ones the other night when i was
falling asleep. the best part is tha you dont need to fuck
about with email attachments and downloading stuff as it
would all be text based. we could probably do it via a
message stream.
whaddya reckon?

cydonia from skopje on 2001-09-03 09:48 [#00028911]

It would be interesting if there is some contest and
everybody should make a videoclip for a song from saw2. I
would like that. But I guess other people won't be
interested in that.
