she's with the band vs. she's IN the band

you know what i've noticed?

there are so many girls who love a certain band to death.
this is especially true for local/regional bands that they
can actually hang out with. their lives are just dominated
by their following of and kinship with this band.

why aren't these music-loving females IN the fucking
bands?!? think about it, music (eg: rock) isn't really a
"boy's club." there just seems to be so little interest on
the girl's part in forming or joining a band. why is it that
they're content following a band instead of playing in one?

Maybe they're more interested in the guys than the music
itself... that's usually the case. They don't like Brandon
Boyd because of his song writing, that's for sure.

rock IS a boys club.

thats a good question, i think a lot of girls think that its
not really for girls to do for some strange reason so they
dont try in the first place. i think that if more and more
began to be in music than more would follow.

i agree with ophecks too, it seems many girls care more
about looks rather than substance...seems to me like the
majority of the girls i know.

caught a group just last night, punk rock group that was 3
girls and a male drummer.

The female guitarist played behind her back, guitar upside
down. Something like that, I play the guitar, and I don't
even think that is possible.

Eyeliners is the band

Hendrix used to do it all the time, hell he allegedly played
the guitar with his dick at a show once and didn't even miss
a beat (no pun intended)

my 2 cents....

perhaps they (like me oddly enough) think that the rock
world/music world is an old boys club. that any woman trying
to make in the industry will have to suck it up to get
anywhere.

maybe it's easier to 'be with' the band than 'be the band'
.....it's an interesting observation!

that was my point too. it is a boys club.

its harder work for a woman to get recognized than a man.

The most interesting women in music ignore the rules of the
game and make their own game, like Chicks on Speed.

qrter: it's not a boy's club. anyone can buy an instrument,
anyone can learn it and play it freely. there're lots of
females in music, just not as many as they should be. just
cos they're not as popular as male bands doesn't mean they
don't exist. but i think the absence of popular female bands
is a factor deterring girls from joining or forming bands. i
don't think they just follow regional bands for the boys'
looks, i know lots of girls who are head over heels over the
music. i just don't see why they don't give it a shot
themselves. it's not like girls aren't creative. look at the
art and fashion worlds. dunno why music (and movies, outside
of acting) are neglected.

touche

still, they didn't rock the stage as hard as the guys did.
They seemed a bit more tame, though the crowd was too busy
digging the fact that chicks were rocking the set

what I meant was, the music industry is a boys club.
its hard for a woman to get noticed etc.

well.....some stuff i know about the art/architecture
world....and the clothing design world.

VERY few women really make it. as an exercise try to think
of the top 3 females in those fields.....it won't be as easy
as it sounds.

right now i can think of the top 10 men in those
fields.....what does that say.....that it's a MANS
WORLD.....GRRLS need to populate VENUS!!

This is true... I know a girl that used to follow a local
band arround everywhere they went... She also "slept" with
all the members. She grew out of this though, or did she
stop after the band did? I forget.

I think most girl rock groups are seen as a bit of a novelty
(I actually know a couple of girls with this opinion!) by
the mainstream, much the same way female DJs are.

The only really good all girl group I've seen were whoever
it was that warmed up for DIV on their last tour. Sadly they
were all unattractive or plain looking and hence don't get
the publicity they deserve...

i wouldn't doubt it! sometimes when he's totally tranced
out in the music his guitar takes on a very phallic quality.
i saw this performance of foxy lady (on dvd) and he was all
sexy on his guitar, thought it might miraculously ejaculate.

i have absolutely no respect for any musician, female or
male who has someone else write their music and is basically
just famous because of their looks and/or the fact that they
are friends with other famous people..

Donna's rock Target commercials. Madonna has ANOTHER album
out.

Whose complaining.

Maybe in electronic there are less women. My theory is that
its due to alpha-male chest-beating tendencies. In being
associated with things "intelligent" or "experimental" there
is maybe a genetic possibililty of attracting through the
association of newness and mystery.
In the process the male may find out that they are more in
love with the music than the women and the game is up.
The other theory is that maybe women just feel too deeply to
express themselves through machines.

i don't see how that would be any different than them
expressing themselves through non "machine"-aided music,
art, poetry, film etc.. where women are sometimes equally as
good..

women don't feel deeper than men do, but there is cultural
expectation for men to deny what they feel more so than
women. the differences between us are more culturally based
than biological than you might think.

besides, our bodies are machines, machines are our bodies.
the differentiation we make between self and other is
strictly utilitarian, symbolic and not real.

i agree for the most part, but it's also true that women can
feel certain emotions more strongly at times because their
bodies can release a larger amounts of endorphins especially
during maternal activities like childbirth and
breastfeeding, which helps to explain the strong bond
between a mother and her child. but i guess they aren't
really feeling anything "deeper", just differently..

the band just cause they really like it.

that's precisely what i'm talking about. WHY? i know
it's common for people of both sexes to feel this way, but
in my opinion this is a lot more common among female fans of
music than males. is it apathy and laziness like Hecate
suggests or do you have your own reason(s)?

you know...

this is a really touche subject... but even here at a music
school, where girls study music... I feel like they just
dont have the passion the guys I know do...

dont ask me why... I have no clue... but its just like they
have more important things to do...

i know guys who would go days without eating to save money
on music gear... I havnt meet a girl with the same passion
yet...

*shrug*
