shortly after one of my grandmothers died, my mother
inherited so we could afford a computer.
it was a performa 5300, don't remember exactly when it
was...

TI-99/4A (1981) - it took solid state cartridges, hence the
games were expensive, hence it lost out to atari, hence it
went bankrupt in 1984.

but the graphics were arcade quality, much better than the
average speccy. unfortuanetly there were very few of them.

my Dad used to use an old Kaypro that had a gray metal on
the monitor and displyed only green characters on a black
background. There was a rip-off PacMan game called
'Catchem' we used to play together and it was a letter 'C'
eating periods. No clue what year though.. mid eighties?

Classic ZX Spectrum - 48K - with the rubber
keys...82/83'ish...

I can still hear that loading sound now...hehe, that's like
getting nostaligic over a Fax machine...

wicked little machine...taught myself to programme & then
got a job pretty instantly after leaving school, doing it
for a living, so best present my parents ever got me
really...

Did turn me into Nerd Child tho...which wasn't a feature
mentioned on the box at all...

My first computer was a Macintosh IIsi, which I think was
around 1992 or 1993. I thought the thing was so cool.
Especially when we got a quad-speed cdrom drive for it. I
was mezmerized by the ability to watch tiny video clips on
the computer. I wish I still had it, it was a nice little
machine.

ZX Speccy 48K - 1 month before I was born (1982). I was sat
at it almost before I could talk :)

I didn't learn to load games till I was 4/5 though, and I
didn't learn how to redefine keys till I was 6/7...

Phiz: My mate bought and Oric with about 30 games, the power
pack blew up, first time he used it!

Jand: Re speccy loading noise- We had a friend of the family
who became a complete wizard due to the speccy, he could
tell what a program did just by the loading noise. He got
really good at programming and by the time he was at college
they were using converters he's written!

I remember spending hours mapping out Atic Attack with my
old man and also writing really simple programs from
magazines and hacking around with them.

Got me into bad havits though- by 6th form when we started
doing basic me and my mate were still using GOTO commands,
completely unaware of the for-loop revolution. The teacher
said it was the first year they'd had this problem and that
it must of been due to our age group being the first to have
home computers from a young age.
