If you've seen those two movies then you understand how I desperately have to see this one.

just watched it last night. two thumbs up. great gritty soundtrack/score. and sandler did a surprisingly good job with the role. i highly recomend it... even to those movie critic snobs that thumbed their noses at all of sandlers earlier movies. this role is nothing like that.
i'm sure there are other threads about this movie, but, i did a quick search and this was one of the first that popped up.
***mild spoiler*** i still don't understand the whole harmonium car wreck thing... unless it was just a metaphor for him breaking out of his shell and opening up.

in as far as i'm aware, the title of Punchdrunk Love was indeed inspired by the radiohead tune we all know and love! =)
as far as the movie itself, i thought it was quite fantastic - in a sense, it seemed to me as though it captured the story through the prism of how a paranoid schizophrenic may experience it - the atmosphere of it seemed incredibly tense in places, almost as though it were all balancing on the edge of sanity - which i suppose is an apt way of conveying the emotional state of the character portrayed by adam sandler.
i wouldn't quite call his role "dramatic" per say, in the traditional sense of that word - he suited the role quite well, however.

what gets me is when they actually bring the movies in and complain to us about it not working. am i wearing a blockbuster shirt? are you being bombarded by the logo everywhere you turn? no. but by a DIFFERENT logo. and by a different t-shirt. and a gigantic neon green name tag that says "VHQ". whatever. nevermind.
people bother me.

you should go out on a video-store clerk killing spree rampage and prove to the world once and for all just how much you really hate humanity! and then once it's all over you can blame your behaviour on marily manson and the 'postal' videogame.

just saw it yesterday!
it is wonderful. very strange. I hate Sandler's other films, but he is really good in this. the part when he sits with Lena in the restaurant and she starts talking about what his sisters say about him again, the anger and sadness passing over his face, really good.
I love Andersons way of working - very much like David Lynch. they both very much follow their instincts, not holding themselves back. thats why all the extraordinary stuff happens AND it works!
I also don't think the car crash and the dropping of the organ don't mean anything much more than that they happen. they do influence the atmosphere however - the world is violent and unpredictable and Barry has to find his way in it, something like that?
my feeling is Anderson puts those things in and later on a good reason can always be thought up. thats how Lynch works too - the dwarf in Twin Peaks tells of walking by the editing room where Lynch was cutting Fire Walk With Me and overhearing Lynch saying: "oh! so maybe thats what I meant with that!". Lynch knew what he was doing on a subconscious level and is self-assured that it will work, later on.

yeah, its really great.
I like how he is like Popeye and his love for emily watson is like his spinach.
I think the car wreck is supposed to be a metaphor for Sandlar and Watson's characters as well as an excellent atmosphere setting device. Obviously, the car wrecking is like Barry's personality; sudden and unpredictable. The broken piano is Lena. She suggests that she has just got out of a possibly abusive relationship. Barry then fixes and learns to play the piano and Lena.
anyway, great movie, especially for a 'romantic comedy'
interesting you think of Lynch in the context of this movie. I also thought this movie had a very 'Lynchian' feel to it. That lingering sense of unease and doubt that is present in so many Lynch works is very prevalent in Punch Drunk Love.

yeah, it's Lynchian as in very free, little inhibitions, which does indeed creates a kind of tense atmosphere which is also incredibly exciting.
the part where Barry is running for his life - it really is scary, but only because Barry is scared shitless. his jump is great.
nothing really happens in the film, all direct conflicts peter out. the film seems to be more about how the story is told, not so much what happens.
great.
thankfully the dvd came out a few days ago. :)

Indeed! It's funny as hell, but it really fits the scene. He is serious about putting distance between him and the brothers, even if it means a nosedive into the pavement.
