why not just scratch all your cd's and listen to them?

why not just listen to mp3's on a computer with no RAM?

why not listen to oval?

why not enjoy the music you enjoy and let other people enjoy
the music they enjoy?

I do listen to oval o_O

those are just 2 possible effects. they'd be global through
the whole album and get boring after awhile.

i just think the whole glitch thing is played out. it's not
a new concept, it's not even that fresh. it can really
enhance a track but it can be and most often is grossly
overused.

shit, all i do wank with my delays and reverb feedback and
i'm happy as a clam. i prefer spirals and exponentially
rising tones and tempos to glitch.

I love the way Go Plastic is glitchy, but it stays within
the beat... lots of people are all over the place with the
beat, but on My Red Hot Car the beat is dead on, and it's
glitchy as hell!!

offline w M w from London (United Kingdom) on 2002-10-12 21:50 [#00401868]

if you limit yourself to whatever you think is "glitch".

offline Conformist from Powell, OH (United States) on 2002-10-12 21:51 [#00401870]

I actually don't even know what 'glitch' is, I just thought
it was rather stupid for someone to whine on here because
they don't happen to like a specific type of music. Just
because they aren't into it, that doesn't neccessarily mean
it's bad. Obviously someone out there is into it, or it
wouldn't exist in the first place, ya know?

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2002-10-12 21:51 [#00401871]

does glitch refer to the placement of beats, or the complex
trextures?

you're way off-base if you think i hate the genre (not that
i think it is a genre unto itself, like you're implying) or
don't think other people deserve to hear it. and perhaps you
haven't noticed but i was opening up a discussion, not
"whining." why the hostility?

you just seemed to be talking down to people who might
happen to like this so-called "glitch". it came off rather
arrogantly how you phrased it originally, as if it were some
kind of horrid thing for someone to even contemplate
listening to glitch. "if you're into glitch so much, why not
just blow your brains out?! scratch your CDs up! it sucks!
woogah wallah! lookit me, maw!"

sorry... i've slipped into pseudo-political asshole mode.

I agree that it's been overplayed now...

But it does still work if done right...but yeah, a lot of
artists seem to think adding it to any old track will
automatically make it edgy...

But couldn't stop myself doing vague robotic dancing whilst
listening to Funkstorungs Bjork AIFOL remixes...that shit is
sooo funky...

making fun of a lack of RAM is not funny!!! While I'm
thinking I'm making glitch in fruityloops, when I make it an
mp3 I find there's not a trace of glitch to be found!! grrr

glitchy stuff i like includes:
later autechre, oval, funkstorung, prefuse 73, cex, kid606,
later squarepusher, later bjork, matmos, and ummm a ton of
stuff i'm forgetting at the moment, sorry

oval pretty much masterminded the whole glitch movement tho;
just listen to some of their samples on cdnow.com or a
similar site and you'll hear pretty much the definition of
glitch

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2002-10-12 22:11 [#00401915]

....and for a good example of its utilization in melodic
music i highly recommend bjork's 'vespertine' album

sure, if i'm gonna count kid606 i may as well count them
right?

anyway, none of this stuff is really like the other, they
just have some minor similarities... hence there's no real
glitch genre in my opinion

is sceneriodisk a good epitome of oval, it's the one I have
but havn't listened to it much do to lack of initial
interest.

autechre are the wickedest "glitchers"

listen to otto von schirach's 8000 bc, or crunch's 1- hyper
mad "glitch"

hmm, well i've heard a few of those artists songs... it all
just sounds like d'n'b to me (and by that, I just sum it all
up by comparison to the most common Aphex tracks, S'pusher,
etc etc). I don't really go by all these other 80 subgenres
like "triphop", "jungle"... if it sounds like Aphex Twin,
then I just say it's d'n'b. but for something like ambient,
that's a huge difference there. I'm kind of rambling now I
think... la la la, weeeeee, zort!

jesus, where's my prozac??

listen more carefully to the beats and vocals, you'll hear
what we're talking about

w M w: all oval's albums are kinda same-y, i think that
one's pretty good but systemisch is my favorite

as for a definition, it's characterized by tons of the
power-on noises you get when you turn off an amp at full
volume.. or CD skipping, etc. It's the art of making music
out of computer malfunctions. check out almost ANYTHING on

Theres a great glitch in Aphex ABB3 (the version that's on
the TEE comp...)...he adds a ton of reverb & it really works
well..

I think that was one of the first times I'd heard one used
musically...

it's best.

When i think of the word "Glitch" i think of artists such as
HÃ¥kan Lidbo and Andreas Tillander and some of Brothomstates
more minimalist works , not IDM artists in generall like
most of you here seem to do???
The "Clicks n Cuts" compilation is strictly glitch for me.

if vladislav delay/mum/minimalist brothomstates are glitch
then glicht is better than great.

Ambient music....Im not sure what Glitch really is, I
thought the stuff that you can find on the Clicks & Cuts
CDs, but that doesnt sound anywhere near Oval !?

WTF !? Anyway, funny you mention it, last week I bought
Microstorias - Init Ding for 1 Euro from EBAY

i know everything's been done (well, so we believe), i only
singled glitch music out cos people here still act like it's
something new and amazing when a lot of it is pretty
contrived and overdone

i dunno what you're referring to re: rock and hip-hop combo,
i mean of all hybrids i think that's the one that's been
done to death over the last 15 years. i don't recall talking
about that (i think i hypothesized a bit about idm + hip-hop
on mainstream urban radio stations) but the only thing i can
think of that might be interesting and new is mos def's rock
album with his band black jack johnson, featuring an
all-star lineup of black rockers:
dr. know of bad brains
bernie worrell of parliament
doug wimbish & will calhoun of living colour

I like glitch.

There is this moving black hole that devours the recent past
making it unpalatable. A couple years later when the black
hole gags it up we can like it again.

I figure the glitch revival will be somewhere around 2014 so
I consider myself ahead of the curve; an avant-garde retro
post futurist if you will.
