Been meaning to check them out. Krautrock right? Apparently
they were a big influence on many. Which albums should I
check?

How about Neu! I've heard they are not very good.

Jonesy:

Can: Tago Mago is a good starting point, as well as
Soundtracks

Neu! have only three albums and are said to be excellent by
those who know. I haven't listened to them personally.

I saw Damo Suzuki live last summer in Belgrade. He played
some Can songs too. Nice chap.

I've got Ege Bamyasi .. pretty cool stuff - though have been
meaning to pick up Tago Mago ..

Tago Mago is agreed to be their finest. I have to agree. It
has everything from blues through heavy metal and
proto-techno to heavy duty avantgarde abstraction.

Yeah I know .. wasn't in the store when I wanted to buy it -
so settled for Ege .. and then later when cashflow was a bit
low Tago Mago appeared.

2cd also eh?

minutes...

Ah ok ..

jonesy, you know UNKLE mixed one of Cans songs .. i think
its on freestyle vol 2 (!k7)?

Points: 6617 Status: Addict

I should probably warn you that my version is burned and not
bought, so, it might be that the retail item itself is on 2
CD's. But I'm almost sure I've seen original CD and that
it's not double.

Yeah, I have that but can't remember what its like. Does it
deviate from the original much?

Thos Freestyle Files are good comps. BTW I have a new
Terranova album for you.

Re: 2 vs 1 cd - my memory might be messing with me, but i
saw it in borders, so perhaps the US version had 2cd (or was
even a rerelease with xtra trax?) .. don't know ..

New? eh .. really, when was this released?

Um.. the unkle version sort of meanders a bit more than the
original. also i don' tthink its exactly a representative
track of can ?!

Can RULE! anyone heard of any recent releases by a band
called Medicine, who apparrently are (were now Karoli RIP?)
Can?

neu! are pretty good - dead hippy though, did some dodgy
album remixes of their own songs where all they did was just
speed the entire track up. they had 3 albums, neu!, neu! 2,
and neu! 75 if i remember correctly, ONE of those is REALLY
good (the others are decent too), the really good one is the
one which starts with the song "Isi" but i can't remember
it's title. Bowie was reckoned to have got inspired by them
for the drumming on "Heroes"... As i said, they also did
some messing about with tapeloops, some of which is pretty
good.

(hope my browser doesn't make this post 3 times again like
my last one)

interesting how ahead of the times they were.

looking forward to the 2-disc Can DVD coming soon with live
and documentary footage as well as 5.1 surround sound
remixed songs.

haha fuck off

hey, you know what? i do really regret bumping this thread.
i should have realized that no one would want to discuss
music here EVER. i did a search for can threads and this
was the one where people were discussing can, so obviously
it's the one i posted about can in! i don't make new
threads when there's already a thread for the topic i want
to discuss because i am considerate.

why the fuck can't you people leave the good threads alone?
get your own thread to go, "haha who are these old people?
where did tyhey go i wonder?" yes it's fucking hilarious.
look how much i'm laughing.

i hope this thread gets closed and all the posts beginning
with mine get deleted. end rant.

hmm yeah sorry if i contributed to the ruining of this
thread, i do tend to go off topic a little too much...i
dunno i guess i just wanted to take the oppertunity to find
out where vit c was, like someone would read my question and
tell me. its not a big deal, not something i would make a
new thread about, but i figured that since ophecks already
mentioned her, this seemed like the right oppertunity...

still going off topic is one of the things i love about xlt,
you never know where a thread will end up. but in the spirit
of keeping music threads about music, i shall ask - what
can release do you recommend, and why?

offline linus from Norway on 2005-06-11 18:29 [#01629792]

some serious can discussion ahead!

i'll start by listing (some of) my favourite songs:

* mother sky (the essence of great krautrock)
* oh yeah (the obvious choice and still awesome)
* halleluwah (da fonk machine!)
* one more night (return of da fonk machine)
* vitamin c (could jaki be the best drummer EVER? yes.)
* future days (ah, pure bliss! and that ending is wicked)
* moonshake (boogie!)
* quantum physics (the drum and synthesizer sounds on this
track should be graced with its own topic)
* cutaway (cool in a faustian way - the band, that is)
* animal waves (this is just an amazing track for a number
of reasons i won't bore you with here)
* return to bb city (see above)

so... have anyone bought the can dvd? that 15 minute version
of 'spoon' from the 1972 live show is INTENSE!

yeah, this one that was posted today is great:

1976-04-28 Can@Koeln
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=45807

it sounds very decent as far as these things go and i really
enjoyed the material they did.

you have to sign up to download the torrent, but it is worth
signing up to that site. they have tons of great bootlegs,
all in lossless formats. they had a nice collection of
radio performances of can before.

i don't know if the 1973 l'olympia, paris and 1972 cologne
shows are still active on the dime, but those are the ones
to start your can bootleg collection with. excellent sound,
great performances and from their best era.
