Anyone a current philosophy major? I'm a Phil. major and
Religion minor.
Current favorite group is Autechre, whom I first heard four
months ago.

...i'll probably be going into a program called Cogntive
Science next year when i go to university...

..it involves a lot of philosophy along with aspects of
psychology and linguistics

maybe you can help me out by answering this:

what exactly does 'solipsism' (sp?) mean?

offline Empiricus from South Carolina (United States) on 2002-10-10 14:46 [#00399256]
Points: 774 Status: Lurker

Solipisism is the view (a) that only the individual thinker
exists (b) the only thing that can be known is the contents
of one's own mind.

It's an interesting subject.

I got interested in philosophy because it examines all
aspects of human inquiry, such as science, psychology,
sociology/anthropology, neuro-science, linguistics,
semantics, political thought, physics, etc.

The main thrust is that of criticism. Nothing is beyond
question or doubt.

assertions at face value.

i'm def no a phil major, but i am very much interested in
religion and philosophy. my religion is my life and is
undefinable because it is always evolving, but i do respect
and learn from any path that resonates with my own. i
should say i'm much more interested in philosophising than
discussing others' philosophising, ya know?

Ok you fucks - education time from your dear friend
Empiricus. DO FUCKING NOT major in philosophy if you want to
get a job, and thus earn money, after you graduate. I
graduated with a BA in Philosophy with a 3.588 recently and
NO ONE will hire me. I aplied for a 16K idiot job at the
local library (went to an interview, kicked ass and
everything) and they gave the job to someone else.

What, REALLY? Nobody wants to hire a philosophy student?
Wow.

Most of the philosophy bods i know are pseudo-goth
middle-class arseholes who wear leather coats as their only
hobby. No disrespect to either you or the thinkers of the
world though, it just seems that philosophy courses are an
absolute twat-magnet, and the employers of the world
recognise this.

What's your major chief? Just curious. By the way, my
classes were hard as a motherfucker because (unlike most
subjects) we were actually expected to have ORIGINAL
thoughts on the matter we were studying (as opposed to
simply memorizing and regurgitating the material).

Fine art, another twat-magnet extrordinaire. I don't have a
problem with either subject, just a large proportion of the
people taking it.

But like i said, i don't mean you, good fella. And original
thinking is hard as a motherfucker indeed, i know.

In my experience, the philosophy majors at my school were
on the whole a good group of people. Very diverse make-up
actually. No goths though.

I guess my particular location might have a higher
percentage of Pretentious Fools (note capitals for Emphasis)
than yours then, sadly. I'm not speaking from a vast amount
of personal experience here, anyway, and i feel a little bit
silly generalizing people into types based on their field of
study. Sorry if i caused you any offence, because it wasn't
my intention.

Anyway, good luck jobhunting, it sucks vastly that people
feel intimidated by knowledge.

I have a philosophy degree - a mate of mine who was a fellow
student described philosophy far more succintly than i ever
would be able to:

"ridiclous and fatuous over intellectualisation by sad old
fucks who are incapable of just living".

i would maj in philosophy but i wanted to get a real job,
the only job you can get with a deg in philosophy is a job
teaching philosophy. but it is such a great subject, i
minored in it when at school, my fav philosophy was
existentialism.

Is it a hard course to study yes it is very difficult
subject. you have to really spend some time getting your
thoughts about a subject out on paper and also READING!! you
have to read until your eyes bleed.

anybody who majors in philosophy i salute them.

There's this old comic where aliens show up and seem
friendly but a philosopher tells them that things are not
always what they seem so they distrust the aliens and foil
an invasion and the philosopher is a hero.

Perhaps you could do something like that for a living.

Yes, finally. It took me long enough though. I originally
went to college immediately after I graduated from high
school, but I failed out after one year. My GPA was totally
fucked and no colleges would accept me, so I worked for a
couple of years before entering a local Technical College in
an attempt to get my GPA up. Four years and four different
colleges later (at 26 years of age) I finally graduated with
a 3.588 GPA with a BA in Philosophy and a minor in Religious
Studies. I didn't decide my major or minor until a couple of
years ago when all of a sudden it became obvious to me that
those were the only academic subjects that I really cared
about.

school and i had to study more in that than in my computer
science and math classes, especially the readings for the
phil classes, jesus some of these guys are on crack.

but speaking of not being able to work in your field, this
also holds true for my field as i am currently not working
in the industry.
