Im new here, have been coming and going thru AFXs crazy
career since the first Bubblebath, but the new singles cool
so I looked him up!
That 'thing' he does with music now (cut ups within the
rythmn, so everything sounds real trippy and you never know
whats coming next)....would anyone out there compare him
with Zappa? And to follow the comparison, where Zappas
fucking about with time signatures etc led to his music
often being analysed as 'cold and unemotive', is this
happening with AFXs music too?

Sound Assassin from Patent Office UK on 2001-08-22 13:43 [#00024113]

Zappa is god!!

His music was never 'cold and unemotive', in my humble
opinion anyway!

They both have a dark humor about them! And yes they do both
have odd time sigs etc...

Afx and Zappa are both genius's!!

Have fun

I think AFX has lost some of his emotion a bit . . . I don't
think he'll ever do anything as beautiful as some of ICBYD
was. I think electronic music might be getting a bit too
clever for it's own good, too much nerdy mouse-clicking and
not enough lushness. That's why BOC cleaned up, cuz their
stuff's quite simple but emotional, whereas stuff like
Funkstorung etc is very impressive but somehow totally
un-engaging.

Or maybe I am just getting old and pining for the 'good ol
days' like a saggy fuckin granpa.

Sound Assassin from Patent Office UK on 2001-08-22 14:02 [#00024117]

I think Afx has always provided a good mix of songs, some
more emotional than others, some more technical.....

My anticipation of Druqks is getting ridiculous!!!!

Have fun

Sound Assassin, no way am I in with the 'cold and unemotive'
critique of Zappa, but for many critics the fact that he
didnt let his tunes meander on their standard
verse-chorus-middle eight way kind of made them think he was
just playing math with the music....a bit like AFX does
sometimes....dont want the music getting too twitchy.....In
is disjointedness, there should also be a flow
heres to the new LP then (AFX that is)

Respect.

i think the difference with Mr Frank Zappa and Aphex is that
at least Zappa released a huge amount of his work to the
public, whereas Aphex has a huge amount of work just sitting
in a dusty vault somewhere never to be released.

Zappa was bothered about getting his music out into the
world to be listened to, but Aphex couldn't give a shite.

Zappa is King!!!! no doubting it.

Sound Assassin from Patent Office UK on 2001-08-22 15:37 [#00024135]

Here, here!! Ain't that the truth!!

dj bladdered from shitty office UK on 2001-08-22 16:16 [#00024153]

thats a very interesting point....being new to the forum, I
didnt know that AFX was meant to have zillions of tunes
tucked away somewhere....however, this rumour once applied
to Prince, and upon release the material was widely regarded
as drivel (ie same as practically all of his post 'Black
Album' output - drivel, that is)
Maybe AFX has a stronger quality control drive than Zappa or
Prince? Does the world need any more 'You Cant Do
That's'....??Could the AFX stuff now sound dated eg what if
say Selected Ambient 1 was the unreleased stuff, and it got
released now, how would it bear up to say 'Windowlicker'?
Just thoughts.....

phiz from Amsterdam on 2001-08-22 16:30 [#00024160]

i'd like the chance to at least hear the stuff he's got
tucked away, it might be shit to him, but you know, one mans
shit is anothers gold and all that, and now with mp3 and
stuff, why not just wack the whole lot out there for free,
if he doesnt think it,s worth releasing just give it away.

phiz from Amsterdam on 2001-08-22 16:34 [#00024161]

also, the years leading up to Zappas death he said he had
made more music than he has done before on his
SynClavier??(anyone know anything about this, i beleive it,s
a cuebase type sequencer) he said he has stored huge amounts
ready to be released after his death, so even when he is
dead, his fans can still listen to new Zappa material.

dj bladdered from shitty office UK on 2001-08-22 16:44 [#00024164]

No idea on the technical aspects of the Synclavier, but it
was one of the first samplers I believe - He released an
album 'Jazz from Hell' which, with the exception of two
tracks, is solely Synclavier based music. IMHO it sucks, so
if he's got tons of that stuff, its best left in the vaults
(find Jazz From Hell and form your own opinion, but its NOT
the Zappa you'd expect - what a contradiction in terms that
phrase is!!)
I agree, whack it all out on MP3, but if you were shelling
out for it, maybe things would be different
Rgds to the 'Dam - what a top city

I've been meaning to buy a Zappa album for quite some time
now, but have always been daunted by the size of his
moustache (back catalogue). Where to start? Cheap Thrills?

dj bladdered from shitty office UK on 2001-08-22 17:13 [#00024177]

Whoo! Some question! I wouldnt go with 'Cheap Thrills' cos
its his 'humorous' side that is showcased here, and his
music is far richer than whats on offer on this showcase.
Suggestions;
You Are What You Is, or
Sheik Yerbhouti
Give you a feel for Zappa's 1976-1980 period (maybe his best
band)

One Size Fits All
Overnite Sensation

Show his 1973 -75 band off to good effect;

If you take the plunge with the later stuff, and like it, my
advice is WORK BACKWARDS CHRONOLOGICALLY from here
Try a Zappa website then if you get hooked...hope you dont
hit the dross first and get put off.....

Hot rats is quite a good album to start on aswell as the
above!

Peaches Enregalia is a superb track off Hot Rats.

It's almost like Aphex Twin but played with real
instruments!

Have fun.
