the definition of music

Organ Grinder/Rujdq Julqghu from my own little fantasy world on 2001-08-20 17:26 [#00023441]

my definition of music is whatever is beautiful to one's own
ears.

If someone thinks a lawnmower sounds beautiful, that is
music to them.

I think people need to realize that everything, whether you
like it or not, is music.

Who's to say if something is good or not? All music is good
as long as it is music to someone's ears.

Although personally i hate American sugar-teenybopper pop
and country, but hey, it's music to some ppl and that's all
that matters.

|=|r3fl3x|=| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-20 20:43 [#00023477]

exactly - hence "that is music to my ears!" anything... to
anyone is music. ofcourse more often than not it is
organized sounds.. beats if you will. But hey..... to each
his own.

Boris on 2001-08-20 21:30 [#00023478]

hence, no one gives a fuck.

The most genoiuguygouygougyiuogyeral all inclusive term that
can categorize all music is organised sound. Lawnmowers
sound is organised in some fashion. Even white noise is
organised accornig to aydjfaoweoijtoijaoijgojargojaojrilk
jasdlk al chaos theoruiujhkjkj. shut me. up.alk sd. So
basically, yes I agree that the goat would make the better
pet than the kitten because you can get free milk and it's
the right size to make love to.

i lost you at jhfkgjfdgiofgifogheoiugrho or whatever. if i
cannot possibly pronounce it i won't worry about spelling
it.

George from japan on 2001-08-21 04:54 [#00023606]

why are you telling us this? even though I agree with
you...just sounds kinda pretentious. whatever

Aphex Twin is good.

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-21 05:26 [#00023607]

I hate people who only like one kind of music, I mean, I
couldn't imagine myself only listening to one kind. I love
all kinds of music. Indie has good tunes, rock has energy,
electronica stimulates the mind, or whatever. Hip-hop is
just nice (by the way, hip-hop is not the same thing as
rap).

Ask any teenager in this fucking country what bands he/she
likes and they'll always begin their reply with "nirvana,
green day... er..." It's fucking true! ALWAYS!

ChemX from Miami, FL on 2001-08-21 05:50 [#00023609]

It's unfortunate that your last statement is so true. The
problem is that that aren't enough radio stations [in the
US] that crank out 'other' genres besides the usual
rock/rap/pop shit. Oh well, I guess that goes to say that
the rest of society is missing out on some great stuff ~
sucks for them ;o)

|=|r3fl3x|=| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-21 06:30 [#00023618]

nirvana is great.

i agree that music by definition is any sound or
collaboration of sounds that pleases the ear. but i have
absolutely no respect for anyone making music solely for the
purpose of making money/becoming famous. 99% of the
"artists" that are popular right now (that are at the top of
the charts), are not artists at all. in my opinion, a true
musician is one who expresses their emotion through the
piecing together of various sounds in rythmic patterns.
britney spears does not do this. she sings to a song that
someone else writes, and dances around on stage in various
costumes. she is an entertainer, not a musician. not an
artist. an artist creates things not because they want the
money or the fame, and not because they want the rush they
get from entertaining, but because they HAVE to create
things. they don't feel whole if they don't. they can't live
without expressing themselves through their music. or as my
cousin says, "i love it so much i can't not do it". there's
a saying you might have heard before. *it's extremely
difficult to be in a relationship with a musician, because
you aren't the only one they are in love with. they are in
love with you, and they are in love with their music.* a
true artist does what they do because they are miserable
otherwise. as an artist, i can't respect or admire anyone
mimics artists or uses art to have that rush they get when
onstage.

|=|r3fl3x|=|: Nirvana are the most overrated band in the
history of the world. They're OK, but the Pixies were 100
times better.

|=|r3fl3x|=| from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-21 07:04 [#00023633]

how can you say that about nirvana? if they were overated
then no one would like them anymore. Atleast not the numbers
they have listening to them still. I love Nirvana. I dont
care what anyone says.. they still rock my world! The pixies
were good too... not too good in my books though... Nirvana
was greatly inspired by the pixies.

ChemX from Miami, FL on 2001-08-21 07:12 [#00023635]

bummer that Kurt decideed put a hole in his face...

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-21 19:38 [#00023719]

barry: I do.... sometimes I sleep :moon walk: its quite
"hip"

Organ Grinder/Rujdq Julqghu from my own little fantasy world on 2001-08-21 20:56 [#00023738]

my brother sleepwalks..... he's a subnobulist.... or
whatever...

it's funny as hell....

one time he was asleep and he said "get up ,move!" while he
was sleeping... but i was like FAR AWAY from him... he was
talking to his pillow, so i moved it... then a minute
later... he gets up again and says "give me back my pillow!"

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-21 21:04 [#00023741]

Organ Griner: really? hm... my cousin used to sleep walk and
stuff.. talk in his sleep too.. freakiest thing ever
happened.. we were all sleepin down stairs {a bunch of my
cousins and me} and I was in my room with this one cousin
who is really cool, and the younger one walks in at like 5am
and starts talking at the foot of my bed.... I was like yo
go back to sleep.... and it was freaky!

Organ Grinder from my own little fantasy world on 2001-08-21 22:42 [#00023765]

yeah it's pretty creepy.

man, talk about getting off topic. we started on the
definition of music then ended up at sleepwalking. :)

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-21 23:00 [#00023770]

Organ Grinder from my own little fantasy world on 2001-08-21 23:27 [#00023780]

i guess so. :)

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-08-21 23:35 [#00023782]

I think one's tastes in music has a lot to do with
surroundings, peers and down the track the kinda memories
you have associated with that phase of your life...some may
find that statement a fallacy in the netquipped age but I
think it has never been truer...one's not likely to persue
and enjoy a style of music for long unless they've got a
sounding board, used to be you had to run around, knock out
and subdue somebody to discuss your favourite obscure band,
then there were fanzines and now we have online communities,
same thing, just the scale's gone all global like..now about
the memories if you had a row and a breakup with a partner,
and good forbid an aphex tune was playing in the
background..It's pretty much guaranteed that 5 years down
the track you will be hesitant about putting that album let
alone that song..it's all IMHO ofcoarse

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-08-22 01:35 [#00023795]

How can you say that about people who dress up like Micheal
Jackson to raise cheap laughs and moonwalk?

Not that, err.., I know anyone, like that. *cough*

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-22 01:42 [#00023797]

Reflex said:
"how can you say that about nirvana? if they were overated

This is why I say they're overrated. If they WEREN'T
overrated, they would just have stopped being popular before
Kurt topped himself. They're just average. But of course
everyone has their own opinion, and are entitled to like
Nirvana, it just annoys me that these kids (some of whom
weren't alive when Kurt Cobain killed himself) only like
them because they're fucking told to like them. It's a
trend, they don't listen to a range of music and decide what
they like, they are just told Nirvana are good by their
little mates, and accept that.

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-22 02:14 [#00023820]

Geonime: so let me get this straigh here.... your saying
that if someone told you that you should like a band or
artists and you actually like them youd say "NO! GO AWAY I
WONT LISTEN" and never listen to it? I liked Nirvana before
he killed himself, ands it trivial anways. So what if
someone liked them after he died? THEY LIKE THEM none
theless, they can't help it and go back in the past and
change what they used to like to what they do in the future.
Smells Like Teen Spirit was the most popular song of the
1990's BEFORE and AFTER he died, Id like to think that, that
is a great thing, an accomplishment, to wow the entire world
with 1 song.

I dont really, care what anyone says. Dont go around quoting
people its really annoying too, thanks.

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-22 02:17 [#00023823]

Geonime: reading your post made me think, think that by
saying what your saying there, makes you just as bad as the
people your trying to defame. You may like a range of music,
as iam sure you do. But so what? You can't generalize a
whole group of people with one sentene!? Thats 100% wrong.
You dont know what these people think, if anything youve met
a lot of people who like them and are close minded, so what,
ive met tons of people that like everything under the
goddamn son and still are close minded pricks. That only
listen to like 3 groups, or 3 artists or something. I can't
believe youd go and say something such as you did there....
too bad really.

i think boxrocket deserves some credit for that long
expression of emotion.. that one that i totally agree with!!

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-22 03:10 [#00023868]

yes yes

Smyrma from St Louis on 2001-08-22 03:50 [#00023878]

I disagree about the 'whatever's beautiful' statement,
because I like some music that I don't think is at all
beautiful. Some complex metal, for example, is interesting
to me and I enjoy listening to it, but it has no effect on
me emotionally. I think music should be defined as 'sounds
that interest at least one person.'

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-22 08:06 [#00023947]

maybe not beautiful or anything.. but sounds good to you. so
maybe like Cannibal Corpse, or APhex, or rock or..... sounds
of water falling on floors.. anything.
