ok heads up pop quiz for ya:

why did humans evolve the ability to listen to/appreciate
music/look at art/read literature?

weird mystical shit i reckon :)

Probably stems from cavemen drawings/beating out drum beats
on their congos... if they had congos

showing off our tails cos its gonna get us a fuck, or a we
like those monkeys who get mental kicks out of doing
paintings?

Part of being human, knowledge of self and questioning the
world, & expression of our place in it. Innit.

art brings forth emotions. I think the better question is to
ask: Why do humans have emotions, where as a fish doesnt (at
least I'm guessing fish dont have emotions)

we must have evolved emotions for some reason aswell though,
dntyareckon? I think my goldfish has emotions but really
simple ones like "i'm gonna get fed.." etc. perhaps when we
crawled out of the oceans we started with these but kept on
getting bigger and better feelings (ones which use more
neurons) as 'survival of the fittest' depicts... the
stronger must have been those more emotionally sensitve.
Whhhhich... kinda brings me back to my original point, why
did 'art' get more and more advanced throughout the ages?
unless it was evolving in the same way as biogological
organisms then it could not possibly have progressed, so
that indicates that there is indeed an objective way of
evaulating art etc... it aint just purely subjective like
all you dreamers hope. Hmmm. I'm gonna go watch 'league of
gentlemen' in a minute and get blazed

:)

the higher level of intelligence that evolved in humans
allowed them freedom to express themselves, create, and
communicate. Art is communication.

They probalby started appreciating it because it gave them
something to do besides hunt stuff and run from scary
predators, etc.

It's because we're curious creatures, we never stop playing
and exploring. It's just a characteristic nature gave us as
a side-effect of high intelligence

Art thrives off creativity. Back in the day, cavemen could
only do so much. They tried to draw animals that they saw
and the people around them. As cavemen got smarter the
drawing become more detailed and more advanced. They learned
that there are many different ways to draw a 'person' or a
'buffalo'. There is no single 'correct' way to draw an
object. Thus depending on how you depicted stuff you created
your own style. If others liked your style and they drew in
a way similar to yours a category of art is born. IE:
expressionism, abstract, etc.

did that make sense?

kinda :) but we're getting into all subsets and divisions
and things which are based in language - if it weren't for
language we wouldnt divide things into objects at all and
your expressionism would approached in much the same way as
abstract stuff. OOOH my god so many questions, so many
different lines of enquiry and only, like, five minutes
until a tv program comes on that i want to watch :)

carry on. I'll check back tomo and see if any of you musos
on here have got a answer :)

peeees.

Anyone able to sum that up on a message board would be
amazing. My entire study track is focused on the comparative
evolution of arts and literature, and I've read mounds of
books and essays trying to answer that question. It's a
huge one. Most theories start with explaining that a living
being can only progress into artistic expression when
they've developed a way to sustain themselves without
constant effort and alertness being necessary. A species
always fighting to survive and only involved in finding food
and shelter won't have time to develoup art, whereas a
species evolved enough to throw dinner from the fridge to
the oven has time to sit at the computer and make songs. In
its beginnings art came into being because there was time
for it. (similar situation for most political ideas,
religion, feminism, architecture, cooking, etc.) It goes on
from there. Whether its beauty is a matter of increasingly
refined intelligence or divine inspiration depends on who
you're asking. (Was that dull or what?)

Music was used to show emotions, and still is.
Scientificly its something to do with hairs in the inner
ear,or something like that.

some art appeals to people by allowing them to go places
they could never go, be someone they could never be, doing
things you can never do. (ex. doom2 hits every category)
There's also a "fun" mental game creating stuff, based on
logical associations of parts, dividing complex problems
into simpler parts etc. Fun is abstract, hard to pinpoint in
definition.

why did 'art' get more and more advanced throughout the
ages?

because of culture? culture is mostly unique to humans on
our planet. it can accumulate and become more advanced
because an individual does not have to repeat the same
mistakes if he views the work of his predecessors, or
competitors in his field (see what succeeds and what fails).
written language lasts until someone burns all the books
