I grew up with Skinny Puppy , going way back to 1983.
Saw them live at the LUVAFAIR here in Vancouver (1984), and
yes I thought they were pretty good.
Then I saw Download live on New Years Eve 1996/97 and I was
pretty dissapointed with that stuff.
I dunno, I found someone whose a musical genius such as
Aphex Twin far scarier then most out there because of his
seemingly unlimited well of unparalelled creativity.
What most people consider scary I generally find downright
hokey.
Selected Ambient Works Vol 2. can be more then scary enough
if its played in the right environment and time of day.
Its slowness is far more haunting to me then silly little
sound effects IMO.
As a matter of fact I know that RDJ can make music creepier
then anyone else out there if he wishes to.
Severed Heads, Front 242, Cabaret Voltaire....etc.. were
great bands back in the 80's, and occasionally find them
cute to listen to for sheer memory sake but I dont like to
live in the past....
To me personally none of those bands have even a fracture of
the talent that RDJ has, Skinny Puppy maybe, but only to a
point.
Then again cEvin Key (SP and Download) has said it many
times himself that Aphex is the greatest , most innovative
artist of the last 12 years, and coming from him means quite
something, cause I totally agree with him.

to r3fl3x sounds like you had quite a night, sex drugs minor
felony...man you had the worx ;)

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-08-25 22:24 [#00025671]

to da postmodernman..
I agree with you for the most part...when you saw download
live, was that the tour for "III"?, that's one of the
weakest albums they have ever done, right after "effector"
:p I think that it's RDJ's sheer unpredictability that can
surprise, unnerve in some cases disturbing...I myself am far
past the point of being scared by anything... a stint of
cleaning up around the med school morgue when I was going to
college took care of that :) But none of the bands you
mention set out to be scary... Throbbing Gristle did! and
boy the Third Annual Report can still be an unnerving
experience...personally I find, ambience to be..well
tranquil and ambient, no matter how steeped in the minor
keys

postmodernvancouver from Gorgeous Ultra Urbanie Hip Vancouver on 2001-08-25 22:36 [#00025676]

I dont know if this was part of an actual tour because most
people dont know that Skinny Puppy are from Vancouver and (
thats sort of how I grew up with them since they always
frequented the clubs I went to in the 80's.
In the 90's I used to see cEvin in my favorite cafe up until
he moved to that stupid city called LA.
Erm, I think that this was just a show for Vancouver's new
years eve back in 96, so I dont know, as far as I know they
played a variety of their stuff.
I know a lot of people out there like Download, but I
personally have never been that crazy about them tbh, it
lacked what Skinny Puppy had in my opinion.

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-08-25 22:50 [#00025678]

I am half and half on download..really liked "Furnace",
loved "EOSP", was blown away by "Charlie's Family", but
then..I already said what I thought of the rest..I mean
skuppy used to stand for all these issues, like animal,
human etc...now cEVIN is exchanging chicken recipies with
interviewers, while singing the virtues of sillicon
tits...that's just messed up making a 180 degree sweep like
that....I actually think Philth is downloads biggest
problem...I think the last few download and plateau were
just Western trying desperately to recreate Cristian Vogel
and other Tresor artists ,missing the whole point and
failing miserably, and taking Key down with him, I think Key
is just having too good a time in the sunny EL AA to care

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-26 00:48 [#00025691]

flea: yeahp..... great night!

I think that Download lost its way after Iii and Effector..
but both are decent listens, they are not the greatest.
Their older stuff is good. OhGr is a good listen as well,
lighter stuff. With time artists grow out of certain sounds
and feels that they have.

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-08-26 01:37 [#00025713]

to r3fl3x..yeah to get a taste of that earlier wilder
download magic I have been listening to some of the Tresor
stuff as I mentioned...Vogel, Schmidt, Landstrumm
etc...excellent stuff all have got aphex some where there in
their bag of influences

r3fl3x from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-26 01:43 [#00025716]

flea: you you can hear the influence!
