...so what?
i don't care at all if music i like has been used in

it's called blanket licencing - it;s part of most big
musicians publishing deals ...they have a right to feature
your music on most things to whatever extent

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-09-04 20:17 [#00378982]

yeah. big deal. they can make an extra buck, how the hell
are they sellouts.
now, if they completely compromise their music and style for
money, they're sellouts.

exactly - it's the good taste of the licencees that should
be applauded

reputation

They're so powerless and spineless that they can't have
their contracts rewritten to give them veto on what their
music (which they work hard to make) is used to advertise?

oh now come on. if the corporations were soulless they
wouldn't have chosen good music. but really, do you actually
think that anyone in the music industry doesn't involve
themselves with "soulless corporations"?

so fucking what - your statements are completley luddite -
what do you have against ford or vodaphone - if it was for
an anti abotionists - private health services or nike then
maybe - but who are you to judge an artist by your remote
viewer standards
dissapointed?

no offence, marlowe, but hasnt this topic been discussed
before?...atleast it was on the 9inchnails.com

trent's always been a sellout, but he's the coolest sellout
and he does it with style.

also, it may not be up to him?...

Zaphod - it's the overpaid advertising agencies who made
the adverts, not the corporations themselves.

I don't consider having your songs used by corporations
being a sellout. Fuck, I'm as elitist and anti-establishment
as the next guy, but if someone offers me a million dollars
to use my track in a commercial... be my fucking guest. I'll
whore myself out just like that, anyone would. It's not 100%
commendable, but money is very important, unfortunately. As
long as they don't change their style and make art that
isn't their own, from their heart, I don't care what they do
with it.

When I hear a Beatles song in a commercial, I don't think,
''FUCK, Paul! Grow some balls, you sellout!'', I think...
''fuck yeah, nice choice of music, (insert name of
corporation here)''.

I haven't seen my dad since I was 6 - an then he was a
junkie alcoholic -- as for the "too cool for school

what nin song was used in the ad? just curious cos nin's
never been on an american commercial asides from movie ads
(they even sued gatorade for ripping off "down in it" years
ago), but i believe you. i'm w/ ophecks tho.. artists have
to make money and unfortunately when you don't have the
benefit of radio airplay (like nin don't in america) then
sometimes you have to make compromises. keep in mind trent
has 2 bands (nin and tapeworm), a label, a studio, and web
sites to run.

Thanx Whaley - but these are two new ads that I've seen - I
was merely adding to the already humungous tally.

My next thread will be about My Favourite JellyBaby

I don't LIKE to support the corps, but you gotta do what you
gotta do to support yourself... so they get a song... so
what. They'll continue to thrive whether or not Trent helps
them anyway. He may as well milk their sorry asses for a ton
of money.

I'm realistic and I know anyone, including me (even if I'd
like to have enough overflowing pride to turn it down),
would whore themselves out, it would be dumb for your
livelihood if you didn't. I look out for number one, and
that's ME.

Damn right I've got a price around my neck! I wish McDonalds
and Walmart would offer me millions to use my awful music in
their ads! :-)

And I don't think I've heard an MJ song in a commercial

michael jackson used to have a huge deal with pepsi in the
80s. i bet lots of ads would use his music today if 1) it
wasn't so costly to license and 2) if people still saw him
as a viable artist.

sell out?
so?
they sell music in the first place
the go on tour and charge money
it is not like they are gods and their music is holy
it was sold in the first place

I just heard Come Together on a phone commercial the other
day! I hear Beatles on commericals all the time. Granted,
they're always COVERS, never the actual recording.

And yeah, I guess that IS where we differ. For me, if given
the choice between keeping my dignity, or getting cash to
support myself and my family and whoever PLUS get musical
exposure, I know what I'm choosing, life is too short to
carry out vendettas against fast food chains, I want mine
and my loved ones lives to be as comfy as possible.

But I see your point and I'm not really arguing with you or
anything, it's a valid opinion, we just have different ones.
You're just damned if you do and damned if you don't, I
guess.

i think there's a wee difference between artists who
blatantly promote products to suit their own needs.
(example:Britney Spears endorsing Pepsi) She chooses to do
that because the more her face is on TV, the more money she
makes.
However, If Aphex's music was on an ad. I wouldnt really
care, because how many people would know it was him?? Hardly
anyone at all. Plus, Aphex isnt going to become a
Millionaire sell-out, is he? It just means his music is on
TV, thats all.

i'm with ophecks cos if i had my music playing in ads it's
not like i'd feel a connection to the company's policies,
i'm still my only person. i don't crticize moby much for
putting all 18 songs of 'play' in ads cos i understand his
point about exposure. the problem for me was that it was
OVERexposure - i already had the album, and due to the media
overload i was sick of it by the end of the year. also, his
ad strategy stuck out like a sore thumb to be due to his
vehemently anti-corporation, pro-human rights,
pro-environmental essays.

I think the real deal is Marlowe is watching people more
talented than him making money...and he isn't. ;.)

He should change his name to brokenwhiny...

Agreed with the more thoughtful posters...An unfortunate
fact of life is COMPROMISE...These artists are lucky, and
far be it from someone with goals in life not to take an
edge and use it for all its worth...The way the media treats
talented artists these days is atrocious, who could blame
them for taking something given to them in exchange for a
few non-fraternizing favors? There is always the chance of
backfire (that cunt Moby), but better that than being held
back by circumstances beyond your control...

Really, some pathetic whiners some of guys are. Shut up
already!
