I've only heard Trout Mask Replica. I willingly admit that I don't get it. I keep listening to it, and on some level I enjoy it but is it a work of genius? I keep reading how the band rehearsed for months and months and then recorded the whole thing in one short session (a few hours). It has such an improvised, amateurish sound. But the more I listen to it the more I can't help but feel that I'm the amateur and that there is something I'm missing.
What is it?

Dude, it was made in two or three days, not in couple of hours. It was the most out-there fusion of blues, free jazz and, er, math rock at that time. He is probably the best ever white blues singer and his saxophone playing was also great. You might want to listen to his previous efforts like "Safe as milk" to get some kind of a warmup before you can fully appreciate TMR. "Shiny Beast" (also called Bat Chain Puller) is another of his masterpiece albums and I prefer it to TMR even. He also made a couple of lame "straight" albums in between, but nonetheless, these albums are fucking treasure.

He's one of John Peel's all time faves and if its good for Peel, it's good in my book. I think you've gotta approach it from a blues "angle", its kinda like a even more drugged up Howlin' Wolf or something, but that said, I can't say it blew me away when I heard it. I might have to go out and buy it.

Aye, he is basically a blues man. But very much out there. He made most of the music on oiano and then had the drummer translate it to drums and then it was translated to guitars.

The name was taken from some kind of a film that Van Vliet and Zappa were making if I recall correctly.

It's pretty cool and twisted... I'd draw the line at calling him brilliant, but it's nice and fun. Makes me laugh out loud and pee my pants, that's always a good sign.
