Jus wanted to know how many of you lot enjoy listening to
(or playing) western european classical music (pre 20th
century) and if so who are your fav composers? This question
extends to 20th century Jazz as well --> ornette coleman and
the free jazz movement in particular (any heard of James
Carter?)...

I like Tallis, my favourite piece of music of all time is by
Thomas Tallis, and 16th/17th century choral works by the
likes of Lassus. Also Purcell. And anyone who isn't moved by
Fauré's Reqiuem is clearly dead from the ears down.

Oh... Faure's work is exquisite. My 'favourite' composer is
probably still Vivaldi (I thought it was a phase, but it's
going on 5 years now). I'm very partial to early baroque,
and mid-romantic. As far as jazz, I used to have a thing
for John Coltrane, but saxophones are starting to get to me.
Jazz is so much more moving to create than to listen to -
it's more conversational than anything else I've done.

As most of you probably know, I love classical music too. I
believe it to be the highest and most hard-to-produce form
of music (but that's just my opinion)

i think classical -- done correctly -- is one of the most
hardest musics to do. you take something like the 4 hour
Messiah peice and its just insane. INSANE!

Satie! Fuck yes. He could do more with less. He
singlehandedly invented modern lyrical minimalism (as
opposed to modern I got no ideas and I'll call it art
minimalism). IMHO.

Go here and listen to the Gnossiennes and Je Te Veux.
Lovely stuff. I'm learning to stumble through the
gnossiennes, so far just the first one cos it's simple. :-)

pre-20th century....what does that mean?

i love beethoven, brahms, bach and all the hundreds of
likes.

but without stravinsky, shostakovich, prokofiev, schoenberg,
berg, .......what a sad musical world

xceque :: i'm a big fan of early choral music as well - not
often you find people dropping Lassus into a conversation.
Victoria, Gibbons, a contemporary of Bach called JR Ahle
who's wicked - he's a bit obscure but see if you can find
any - and Monteverdi - vespers being my favourite track.

outside of that, i'm also a big fan of bartok, stravinsky,
vaughan williams, rachmaninov and anything with emotion.
here's to unpretentious views on classical music. nice one.
