i've never heard the direct leap from black sabbath and led zeppelin to soundgarden. lots of people say that, but i don't hear it. those bands were coming from a rock/blues background, soundgarden was coming more from later heavy metal.

summary of the previous 3 posts :
- cornell's voice is on the edge of being cheesy to some people
- some people don't care about reviews and journalists comparing bands to bands
- some people don't know their led zeppelin
well it's just about playing it , banging your head and saying FUCK YEAH or FUCK NO, it's not electronics. careful analysis kills this music imo.

The Audioslave stuff is pure shite...
The two bands it was formed from (Soundgarden/RATM) should have stayed together and made good music...
Skip the Audioslave stuff and get the Soundgarden albums... Good stuff!

I agree with Arf's post, Soundgarden sound really distant from those bands, I can only acknowledge the shallowest of similarities.
And I'd say Sabbath are for more than just rocking, they seem like a cute little engine-that-could to me, all over the place. Often goofy but always endearing. Soundgarden, bless 'em, knew their role.

oh fuck this. i was expecting a few die-hard Soundgarden fans jump into this thread and shout : hell yeah ! or hell no ! you're full of shit ! fuck off ! audioscrobbler is shit ! and you're full of it too !
i appreciate your attention, thanks. anylizing spontaneous rock music is like forcing tridenti to translate shakespeare.

Fair point, but I don't think Sabbath weren't even very spontaneous. They were schemers, and Zeppelin were ten times shrewder yet. But yeah, sometimes you just put your balls to the wall and rock. They could both do that way good.

You know, I thought soundgarden was ok back when they did their first two albums. I still think they rode in nirvana's shadow, and couldn't have done it otherwise.

I dont see it either. I also dont think a typical rock fan would make the compairison. Perhaps a journalist or someone that doesnt know much about the particular scenes or bands at the time.
Compairing "sabbath bloody sabbath" to "down on the upside just doesnt work.
Its too vague.
Needs to be more hyper indepth.

Yeah! Soudgarden rules!
But Cornell's solo album was very dissapointing IMO. Emogay I would say...
Hope if Zack de la Rocha someday releases some fuckin album, will do his work better!

i didn't say it clear, my bad. the comparison to Led Zep and B.Sabbath is what i kept reading back in the days when i used to read a monthly magazine about rock. and the Seattle wave came. journalists, as usual, tried to draw comparisons.
imo - everyone is everyone, it's hard to tell [sometimes] who's inspired by whom.

Remeber how great Living Colour was? Music was really raw in the early 90's. Reminded me of the late 70's NYC punk new wave scene.
