I approach him with my Grantz Graf DVD/CD in hand t oa cool
and wise looking attendent at the Southend HMV in Queens
Road
I hand him the CD
Me:Cheers mate

HMV guy: Your the only person mad enough to listen to that
around here along with me!

ME: You into Autechre then?

HMV guy: Yeah, i love 'em, there better live than in the
studio. I prefer their old stuff like Incunabula, thats a
brilliant album.

Me: Yeah i got that. Cool album! You like Aphex Twin?

HMV Guy: Yeah i do (at this point i unbutton my shirt to
show him my black Rephlex top, he smiles) Yeah my best mate
use to live right next to him. Used to go round there, and
Richard (Aphex) would just stand outside and look at the
stars.

Me: Oh cool, (he hands me the CD back) cheers mate

HMV Guy: Have a good day mate

Is that the HMV near the Doc Martens store?

Last summer I wanted to buy the On remix single (except the
CD box had the normal single in it). I asked the guy and ,
well, he didn't have a clue! "Er, no, we probably don't have
the other CD."

Great story, eh?

i just thought it was intresting. I mean this is Southend
where EVERYONE is either into Crappy Dance or Metal. No one
listens to Aphex Twin

thats cool ive never had a good conversation with anyone
from those bigger stores. they usually havent heard of
anything I buy, but I almost always only buy from indie
stores.

when i bought my copy.. the cute girl at the coutner asked
'have you heard this yet?'
me: 'yeah some of it'
her 'oh how is it?'
me 'pretty good...kinda rougher than their older stuff'
her 'rougher?'
me 'yeah..some parts get kinda brutal actually'
her 'wow, really? it looks like such a gentle album'
(reffering to the cover)

i guess my friend also had a brief discussion with her as to
what the best squarepusher album is once too.. there seems
to be a whole bunch of people who work at the local store
who are into cool stuff

I went to this music shop in cambridge, with envane, and the
guy behind the counter said, "Autechre, they are wierd man.
I saw them up in Manchester once, they were so wierd, but
great."

And another time in HMV, i had a convo with a worker about
afx after getting AB3, and he said that he ordered it.

HMV is an overpriced store. They do have the best selection
though.

There is this new place called fopp in Cambridge. A singel
is £3, EP £5, album £10, rarity or multi-cd £15.#

Good value.

I got my Gak EP and Quoth clear vinyls BRAND NEW from some
place in London a couple of years ago for £3.99 each. Bet
I couldn't do that now. And when the Mike & Rich LP came
out, I trawled virtually every record store in North Wales
for it, and eventually found it sitting on the new releases
shelf in 'Our Price' - the last place I ever thought of
looking.

We know exactly what essex is like ;)

I know I asked you before, is it really like it's portrayed
in the film "essex boys"?

yes totslly - things are just like they are in films ...
people in record shops are always into music - rather than
pop stuff which is dull and silly

to be an Ae head and told me he saw them live when i met him
briefly.

all pop crap, metal crap and other crap.

maybe he was. its better than the time when i went into a
record store, asked for LFO, and the guy gave me a weird
look and took me to the pop/easy listening section. I felt
like kind of an idiot for not specifying which LFO.
