Just got dvd/cd grantz graf... the dvd video for it is one
the best creations in art I've ever seen. The detailed
microscopic music is matched click for click with even more
wicked visuals. As for the cd by itself I so far don't think
it's as interesting as lp5/ep7... maybe they're thinking
more as potential for visuals now or something... track 3
seems the best since it mutates the most... they still have
great complexity but a lot of their recent tracks
(confield/grantz graf) stopped evolving, just stays as one
long symmetrical complex wall sometimes, though with some
randomness.
--------------------------------------------
IRAA was mentioned in "screensavers" a tech tv show... so I
guess this group must actually be having some sort of recent
political pull if they'd mention it. But I don't know much
about it (don't even know if those are the right initials)
They had a poll to ask which was the best way to fight them
and 99 percent voted to "hack them".

You mean the RIAA? Their website was defaced yesterday and
still appears to be down. It was the target of a
denial-of-service network attack a few months ago. You can
expect this sort of thing to be ongoing.

Heh heh... it seems the ONLY people who would support RIAA
(or... "IRAA") would be artists themselves since they'd make
more money if RIAA supported them. Anyone else would
naturally want everything to be free.
(unless the idea that being able to preview stuff actually
increases cd sales is true)

no, the only people that REALLY want it is the record
company. The artists hardly get any of the money anyways...
doesnt make much of a difference... and while theres is
exceptions to this, alot of artists would just be glad
people are listening to thier stuff, in anyway shape or form

that's a weird idea. I guess that could be true, never
thought about how the record labels would benefit from this
for some reason.

Well the aphex wouldn't be a millionaire if all his stuff
was given away for free. Even though the label ate more of
the share than he did...
We don't need labels today, actually where do they
manufacture the 10,000 cd's or whatever they need for one
release? In some wharehouse I guess- couldn't some
altruistic-to-eachother artists form a "label" but with NO
gain for the label, ALL the money would go to the artists?
They could just pay some to pay for the 10,000 cd's to be
manufactured. Once they establish themselves by word of
mouth as constantly releasing solid excellent material, they
don't need a real label for exposure/promotion... specially
with the internet.

well, i think the majority of aphex's money comes from
lisencing his music, doing soundtracks, and commericals.
(the ones we dont know about)

seriously... thats where the money is at.

sure he makes money from his cds, but i bet you it doesnt
come close to the money he makes from the aforementioned.

also, my cd that im releasing on my own label soon, is gonna
be sold directly on the net, by word of mouth. I pay for the
cd pressing, and then i get all the profits

its worth a try eh?

musiclink is an interesting setup. Although I still
feel the best thing to do is pay the artist directly.

Suppose you get a demand for 10,000 copies of them
hypothetically. Will this force you to go to a label, or
what? You can't possibly burn 10,000 on your computer? Can
you contact some mass cd burning factory or whatever without
using the label as a middleman?

oh hell yeah.

thats what im goin to do. Im getting them pro pressed, with
jewel cases, art work, and printed stuff on the cd.

do a search on google for "CD pressing"

and youll find lots of companies...

Musiclink looks interesting, I'll have to check it out
further.

Okay, that said, there seems to be absolutely NO reason for
an artist to get on a label. Does everyone get on a label
merely because "that's the way it's done", just because
culture has designed this system and everyone figures it's
the right thing to do? Or are they a no longer needed
vestigal remnant of a time when the radio was the main
exposure and internet didn't exist?
Looking from, say, my own point of view, the only reason I'd
want (whether or not it's good enough) to get on a good
(IMO) label like schematic or musik aus strom is to be sort
of linked along with them, so if one person likes this
particular type of thing, they can access my music after
discovering their- a sort of exposure group.
You could sell your music on ebay.

well, a label is a great way to get your name out.

they do all the work of getting your name out, and they are
the ones that put up the money for the pressings... which
can add up.

I also think people just think its the way its done...

id get on a big label, like warp, just to get my name out

only reason really...

Okay so the label takes like 70 percent right?
How much exposure does the label give you ... 70 percent
more to justify this?

Maybe it would be better to make 70 percent less profits
(for lack of exposure) but keep all the money yourself and
don't support a labels continued existence (since they seem
to be big parasites riding on artists back- THEY don't make
any creations, they just take money)

running a label is fukking hard work.

three good reasons to sign to a label (which have all been
mentioned..):

- they do everything (except the music) for you (theres a
lot of logistics - designing, technical stuff, distribution
etc.)
- they put up the starting capital
- you not only get your own name out, you ride on the name
of the label itself, their reputation.

This is all tied in with whether you make something for
someone else or for yourself too.

depends on the label you're on.

I think warp and especially planet µ respect the artist.

... I think that's a wee bit much yes. Unless you have a
large family and group friends where the entire group is
sort of expected to buy it out of support or something.

Are you gonna have a sort of exposure where you give away
most of these 500 cd's for free on campus, hoping that word
of mouth will grow exponentially?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-08-31 07:28 [#00373505]

no, im not gonna give it away for free...

quite alot

damn, I wanna videogame that's like gantz graf... not
movie-like though. Maybe you could control that bizarre
throbbing polygon mess somehow in some challenging way. I
hope that video inspires others to make similar things and
release them, I hope they start a subculture of weird videos
accompanied by music and show how wrong mtv had it.

People like to know what they're buying b4 they buy it
naturally, so maybe just spam/post somewhere on campus the
internet site to your music page with only 3 free tracks
(and a convenient link to a method to buy the cd with all
the tracks from you.) *shrugs

i always intended to have a site with some samples on it,
and then be able to have people order online etc
