I've been living w/ my roomie for so long that we're
considered "common law' by the Canadian Government. I think
that is retarded!

on the wedding night the man gets to see the woman's pubic
hair and breasts and gets to stick his penis somehow into
the woman's vagina for some reason, or so i hear, its
suppossed to be a big deal......

actually it seems to me that two people find another
individual of an equal place and quality in society, make a
deal to use each other for selfish reasons, then either grow
to hate each others fucking guts or get so used to each
other they become part of their daily rituals and refuse to
change in any way because they hate change so they go on
with the charade and know nobody else would marry them
anyway.......

You have that in the States too. "Common Law Marriage"
here it's when any 2 ppl of the opposite sex co-habitate for
a year or more. I now have legal grounds to take half of
his wealth if we "separate". I think there are potential
tax implications as well, I really don't know much about it.

thats bs!

so are you considered married? or do you still have to get
officially married?

are you even dating this guy?!

funny thing is my BF and i get the 'husband and wife'
comments as well as ' you outta marry that girl' comments
when we are out in public.

it's really sweet cos we are basically holding hands and
just talking and peepz see something there.

makes me feel all oozey inside....him too i think =0)

Marriage does not exist in Poshnu culture (as the rest of
Tuvalu as far as I know, but it's a big mysterious place)
Our social mating structure is based on dominance
hierarchies, on which I am the apex of an inverted pyramid.
I'm the only citizen of course, so my competition is not in
the form of other citizens but in the form of trees.

No, we're not even an item!
I really don't like the whole deal. But it hasn't affected
our lives in any way so far. We didn't recieve any
documentation or notice or anything, I'm just aware of it,
vaguely.

Hypothetically, we could still get married, of coarse, but
the gov. would recognize us as married if we wanted (for
taxes or whatever), as far as I know.

ask john bobbit. even if it's "legal" do you really want to
face the consequences?

i think the "common law marriage" laws vary from state, two
years where i live i think...... the laws are mostly
outdated and were meant to deal with the poor and fringe of
society people and kids... i don't think most people worry
about these laws unless there is some sort of "problem"

one of my friends got married about a week ago. what i find
stupid about getting married is throwing a massive wedding
party-but it seems that's what ppl do here. my friend
actually spend all his money to throw this party-if i were
him i would spend that money on having nice time with my
girlfriend/wife. and i also think that getting married
should be a personal thing, so i definitely wouldn't invite
too many ppl-infact the best way for me would be if only two
ppl attended the wedding.
but that's just me

i will have been married two years this oct. its wonderfull
knowing you have met, and are with your mate for life. the
feeling of being able to share even your most intimate
secrets. i dunno, its just great.

its like a relief. because im with her, im more comfortable
with myself.

weve been having a few problems of late, but things are
starting to look up. were taking an overseas trip next
aprill, and just trying to relax a bit.

belle has also just started back at work, which is helping
her heaps. she still needs to feel independant.

but yeah, in general. its fucking awesome.

we have a two year old girl too. which is an even more
intense kind of love. its amazing.

wow!

thanks! I finally got a REAL answer to my question :D

so, its amazing... but what are some of the problems? (if
you dont mind me asking!) And I mean in general, not anythin
specific

and tell me what its like to be a father too!
wow!

Last I saw, in the US, common law marriage only went into
effect if you filed joint tax returns, and otherwise acted
as if married in any legal matter. Only a handful of states
still recognize it, and I don't think there's a set number
of years now. And yeah, it's outdated.
