Police issue alert after lethal embalming fluids stolen
21.08.2002 11.45am Police have issued a general alert after the theft of lethal embalming liquids from a Waipukurau undertaker.
The bottled Searine, Introfiant and Metasyn were taken from Central Hawke's Bay Funeral Services in a theft mirroring a storyline from the television show, Six Feet Under, about the misuse of the chemicals with illicit drugs.
But today police and funeral directors warned the embalming liquids were highly toxic. There had been several deaths in the United States where their misuse was most common,
CHB Funeral Services director Peter Fleming said: "They've stolen some very toxic chemicals. If anyone ingests them, there will be very, very, serious consequences."
Fellow funeral director John Peryer, of Tong and Peryer, Hastings, said: "They could be very fatal."
Mr Fleming warned that if the bottles were found discarded, police should be alerted immediately, and added: "Don't open the bottles."
The TV programme, and internet material, exposed using embalming liquids with cannabis, but while several weeks had passed, the burglary of the chemicals in Waipukurau on Monday night or early yesterday is thought to have been the first of its type in New Zealand.
Mr Fleming and Mr Peryer, each with many years in the business, said they had not heard of any other thefts of chemicals within the trade.
"I've been in it 25 years," Mr Fleming said, "and we've only had one other burglary."
Constable Julieann Treseder, of Waipukurau, was today trying to establish clearly what the chemicals could be used for. Police around the country were being asked if they were aware of any similar thefts.
"No other funeral homes in the area, or around the North Island, have been burgled, that we are aware of," she said.
All of the chemicals were in plastic bottles, including two boxes of 475ml bottles with blue tops, and several one-litre bottles with handles.

They are corrosive chemicals, and must be handled using protective gloves, in well-ventilated space. Their handling is covered by OSH regulations, and couriers transporting the chemicals have to have dangerous goods carrying training and certificates.

actually as the story unfolds here..they say that there was actually a drug on the streets in the US in the late 70's called the Embalming Fluid..plus there has been a recent spate of deaths in the US as well..from people trying to cut their put with the embalming fluid..following that episode's airing in the US..
crazy world..The TV is more real than real life and real people try their damndest to transport themselves into their favourite shows..

that's the scariest part, the thought of someone watching a guy have a seizure over the stuff and then think, hey that could be a cool thing to try..., I don't understand? like you said flea, there must be a bit of a history of the stuff being used before to convince someone that it's a high worth stealing for, I don't see much intrest in dipping joints in toxic corrosive liquids and then taking a big toke, sounds more like suicide to me
