when i hear the endless, futile debate of analog vs. digital in music, it never fails to come to mind that aphex for one has openly gone strictly digital for some of his greatest material. among the best electronic music ever created, if not the best of just about any genre alive in the digital age. so it's apparent that it's the man that makes the machine. but the more i listen to some of richard's earlier material, it's becoming incresingly clear that there is indeed a warmth and beauty about analog that digital can't match. and it's quite infectious. even the cheesiest dance music with that sound and feel rarely fails to turn me on.
i'm really curious as to what equipment was used on saw85-92. that album is so fucking beautiful. a little complex in terms of technique like most of richard's work, but not so much in the vein of instrumentation. i can hear a lot of the same drum and synth patches throughout, but rightly so as they feel so appropriate. i'd love to know what this kid was playing with.

deffinately, you can hear and feel the old synth sounds on the early stuff, the old machines when pushed can create some lovely sounds, i've got a roland cr8000 drum machine that gives some great beats that digital drums can't match.

nah man, the tape hiss and bad sound quality adds to the warmth. especially on xtal. it sort of smudges the music, but this is a good thing in the case of ambient works.

the tape hiss is great. it's very atmospearic. i listen to a lot of lo-fi indie rock and it's inspired me as a musician not to spend so much time on a crystal clear track.
zaphod had a great point about xtal. the machines sound like they're breathing. then kicks in the pulse. the less than perfect mixing job makes each individual sound more subtle for the better of the song as a whole.

I agree the tape hiss is fine, it sounds dusty and atmospheric. I read an interview with him years ago and he was saying why bother with expensive filters when you can just trim the top end and stick on loads of reverb! (thats kinda punk)
It sounds to me like lots of Roland 808 / 909 (drums) and obviously the 303 but I dunno about the rest.
(obviously he can afford those expensive filters now!)

I find the earlier stuff a little hit and miss, esp on ab3.
While there is the undesputed warmth of the tracks due to the means of recording, they can been seen as a little dull occasionally. Not to detriment the classics, (most of saw1, a few tracks off ab3 inc. 11, and AB itself) but there is a lot of simple, 4/4 kicks and formulaic 303 baselines.
