cun8er, i understand now..i guess that really depends on a persons mind, whether they get sick of/just don't care about questioning things..a lot of christians seem to take the word in spoonfuls and don't retort, but then a problem will whack them out of space, and then they'll want to question, or secretly question, but will not do it..they keep faith strong, and maybe it will satisfy them, or maybe there will be a gap, but in christianity it's also about going to heaven and whatnot, and that keeps a lot of people going...
re: balancing
very hard to explain and i'm off to bed (damn tired) but maybe one day i'll get the words to make this come across better:)

"What if there is a room totally void of consciousness - ie. no one can see it (not even animals - just to save complications) then surely what you are saying is that, in this instance the room doesn't ACTUALLY exist ... it only exists when someone walks up to the room and opens the door and enters the room - and is conscious of it.
This would mean that things pop in and out of existence, and this seems to me, be complicating matters a little. Although, as said earlier, it can not be refuted.
"
yes think pop in and out but not literally... I'm talking about a metaphyisival sense here... the room would still be there (if we are trying to be objective)... but what's the difference if it's there or not if there's no being that's affected by that room... it's the same as if it didn't exist.
apply that to the universe... it just seems such a waste for it to exists (lets assume it does) if there were no purpouse or end for it... if no intellgence existed universe would be like that room... so consciousnes existing gives the universe a sense.. it makes sense if there are conscious beings in it otherwise it wouldn't, don't you think?

well the conciousness is a mistery, I won't try to define it. I wouldn't be able to tell if someone else than me is conscious so I can't answer that question.

We will never know if there is a God or not, its simple. To say that God "works" for some people is to imply that God doesn't exist.
If I am being honest the only answer I can give is I dont know,
personally i would rather there wasnt a God, then we would be responsible for our actions, and not try to understand it as part of an unknown masterplan.
The 20th centruy was the worst for killing murder war etc etc God didnt help the innocent...
Why should we wordship him? Is He worth having faith in? If He created everything He created evil. Maybe He is an apprentice God and messed up the design and superior Gods take the piss out of him in the canteen for being crap.

the bible is a book written by someone who was the Stephen King of the day.
it's amazing how the written word has so much power, one sentence can be taken so many different ways, hence the bible, one book that has been translated in so many ways that now one word or a couple of words can be taken to mean so many different things.
do i beleive in god? all i can say is, "Prove it!!!"

OK guys here I come... -God isn't a person -God isn't male/female What IS God? God is everything you CAN see and everything you CAN'T see
Don't think about this, experience it. Because you won't be able to explain this infinite definition with your brainz.

I too am an agnostic. I think that it is philosophically imposible to prove the existence of God, while at the same time saying that "God does not exist" is a highly illogical statement because the definition of God is of a conception beyond our grasp.
I also think that Neizsche was a bit of cunt.

I just read a book about Nietzche, and the man was a total fucking clueless miserable knob. He was about as wise as a packet of Gypsy Creams.
Anyway, all this God business... who cares? None of us will have a fucking clue till we die. If there is one, it'll be a bonus, if not, who cares? We're dead!
So lets all have a nice cup of tea and a cake while it's sunny, and worry about such things when we're eighty.

i think the problem with religion is that...for example with christianity, god states that if you dont believe in him/her/it, you will be punished.....religion (as far as i know) is so black and white......it tends to start wars...if it were TRULY based on acceptance and generally being good people.....then we'd be a lot better off, IMHO.
i live by the 'do unto others' rule, as i rekcon thats quite good.
im not religious in any way though.

I too have read a bit about Nietzche. Am I right to say that he thought is was pointless being alive ?
If this is the case he must not have carried out the following tasks :
1. Viewed porn mags
2. Got pissed with his mates
3. Brewed up a steamy log and sat and read a book for 1/4 hour whilst ridding the colon of the big smelly trout
These are just three good things about being alive. If he was such a miserable twat, he may not have had any friends.
Bye bye

i think the only way one can know and know of god is through death. i imagine he is much too busy to bother with us at the moment. there is no way to prove/disprove the existence of god while living. science can't do such because science does not deal with the supernatural/mythical realm, only what empirical. many old philosophers did actually believe in god. there were three proofs of god, but each is capable of being argued against. one dealt with how complicated organisms are. the eye is used as an example for it's structure i.e. lenses, optic nerves, pupils, corneas are very complex. the theory is that something as intricate as the structure of the eye would not be something that could happen over time, but would have to be made that complex to begin with. the second is for the universes being. it's a belief that god created the universe, but then you have to ask who created god. the third is everything was set in motion by one cause. god sets the universe in motion, universe then harbors elements for life, elements for life then create life. the problem with that is no one can prove what set god in motion.
someone brought up the point of the hate and suffering that is in the world and that no god would allow that. it depends on what concept one believes in, but technically god is supposed to be benign and omnipotent. with the world the way it is, it would mean there is no god, or the god we have is malevolent and more interested in destroying us rather than loving us.

"Hey Earface" , Nietzsche was on to something ..
Think about his psychological explanation why an overt belief in god is a dangerous thing. I mean, yeah sure he was grandiose and all that - a little over the top and all that (could be those syphilitic scars in his brain kicking in).
So in a nutshell what he was saying, was exactly the opposite of what Wizard presumed Nietzsche to have said. After all he proclaims himself to be arguing from the perspective of LIFE ..

Re: the second post of this thread
I would just like to say that I don't believe you can really justly discount the God of Christianity. There is one God, IMO, and each religion and each person has their own unique place to view, or not view, God from. There are many distortions in the Christian view of God, but I don't think that a Christian claiming to have found God hasn't found God, but merely has a limited view of God. God is me, you, the Bhudda, the mobius strip. It is wherever you choose to find it (not using the word "it" to depersonalize it, but because I think that God can express itself in either gender or no gender, or as something that has nothing to with organic biology at all).
