This article was in my newspaper, it's the top 20 guitarists ever as voted by some fuckass magazine... Total Guitar, I think? They made a Top 100, my paper showed the top 20.
1 Jimi Hendrix 2 Jimmy Page 3 Eric Clapton 4 Slash (WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!) 5 Brian May 6 Joe Satriani 7 Eddie van Halen 8 David Gilmour 9 Kirk Hammett 10 Steve Vai 11 Carlos Santana 12 James Hetfield... alright, I love the guy, I love Metallica, but come on, he's a straight forward rythm guitarist, nothing more
13 Tom Morello 14 Kurt Cobain (fuck off... great songwriter, nothing special guitar wise, anyone can play that stuff)
15 Mark Knopfler (...) 16 Zakk Wylde (fast and shredding, but... come on...) 17 Gary Moore 18 Jeff Beck 19 Stevie Ray Vaughn 20 Angus Young
When ANGUS FUCKING YOUNG makes the top 20, and Randy Rhoads DOESN'T, you know this was voted on by a bunch of fuckwits. I bet Randy Rhoads would be in the top 5, if not 3, if he lived.
I think Tony Iommi deserves to be ahead of guys like Moore and Knoplfer, even if just for the mountainous riffs... wrote the best guitar headbangin' lines ever.

Slash is pretty damn good technically... sloppy but raw and kinda classical. Hetfield is tight as fuck but agreed, no real flair... Cobain I guess is there for songwriting which is a big part of playing guitar really, look at Tom Morello who is the opposite.
I'd have Adam Jones from Tool for great effects use in there.

Slash is great, but in the top 4, that's a bit much, I think. How influential was he? Not very, nothing special... really great skills, of course, not taking anything away from him.

Agreed about Adam Jones... although Danny Carey always takes my listening attention away from him... :-/ That guy is a beast... but that is one tight band, and his riffs are just so solid and perfect.

santana isnt too great, kurt cobain wasnt all that great at writing songs or playing guitar and slash? i hate gnr. its just crap 80s rock. the others for most part are good or decent. hendrix is probably the only one worth mentioning. it should just be best of all time and no listing. I mean theyre have been hardly any good guitar players. I mean sure playing fast always make people think your good but no one in the last like 20 years has done anything important that most cant do(in general). I want some weird complicated shit thats never been seen before. I dont want riffs. thats why I have a hard time making songs on guitar because its hard to do anything unique or original. guitarists need to take more breaks. less notes and a better atmosphere. i hope someone comes along soon with a completely new style that sounds unlike anything played before. than whoever that is will be 2nd best. theres no need for this top ---- business because everyone steals ideas from others anyways. im just rambling now but whatever. I dont even know if I said what I planned on saying in the first place.

i think what you're probably trying to say is nearly all the guitarists in that list pretty much only play fast solos(apart from kurt cobain and such but even though i love the guy he was a relatively shitty guitarist) which really only involves scales and so forth and anyone can do it with a bit of practice i reckon.
incidentally i really approve of the Seinfeld theme that seems to be around here...
anywho i'd probably have people like elliot smith and jeff buckley near the top and i suppose classical guitarists and stuff are obviously gonna be much better than jimi hendrix, but the question is are you only going on technical ability or what ?
i've got legs.

Good question... his guitar work on Live at Leeds makes me lose my mind. Young Man Blues! Holy fuck, makes Zeppelin sound like tame little wankers.

all the people on that list are just the flashy guitar players, they all basically suck. except for brian may and jimi hendrix. i am very dissapointed that frank zappa, pat metheny, john schofield, django reihnhart (or however his last name is spelled), trey anastasio, bill frisel, maybe duane allman... and a few more didn't make the list. but whatever, go brian may! his tone is the shit.
