Don't Call it IDM

Somebody Else from Dallas, Tx. on 2001-08-08 19:12 [#00020450]

If you observe the roots of Electronica over the past 40-50
years (new age, Ambiant, noisescape, concreten and so on)
the term IDM just seems retarded.
Does Itelligent Dance Music refere to the drum &
Bass/Ambiant crossover or just Bands like Aphex twin and
squarepusher, or autechre.
What the hell is up???? Coments???

pos69sum from yr arse on 2001-08-08 20:28 [#00020472]

i've never referred to it as idm
i prefer to call it blargorgneyzoovatnerski

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-08-08 21:32 [#00020490]

Intelligent Dance Music to me: Refers to electronica music
that is intelligent.

(Most Dance music, i.e. on the radio/pop/house/mainstream
trance and hip hop has been dumbed down for the general
public hence, not "intelligent")

True the Dance part isn't necessarily accurate but who
cares? Its just slipped into vocabulary, anyway, I've been
known to Dance to some AFX and BoC in my house :)

although IDM may seem like a retarded term (i am from Fort
Worth, TX by the way) how else would you categorize these
artists?

You can't just slap a standard dance label on these guys --
Autechre has their own genre, as do Squarepusher and Aphex
Twin.

The fact of the matter is that IDM is a term which is used
to categorize the artists who can't really be categorized.
It is music that is intelligent -- an oasis in the desert of
dull raver music.

(although i will admit some of the earlier Aphex Twin and
AFX has rave potential)

In my opinion calling it IDM all the time is the first step
to mass commercializing this product as mucis. Its a stupid
tag, its not intelligent, its different. Its anything, why
dont you call it DDM its just stupid. IDM, who cares, just
watch soon they will be selling it as IDM, and have its own
section. Its all over then. Worthless, just as bad as the
rest of the music industry.

okay. *hides in a corner to avoid getting flogged*

I like the term cerebral music, or just electronic seems to
cover a wider group. Intelligent music is all right, but I
don't think the dance part is a very accurate discription
for EVERY song that is filed under this "genre".

Aron? from Canada on 2001-08-09 00:07 [#00020539]

I just call it experimental electronic music

brian from mi brane on 2001-08-09 00:08 [#00020540]

that's why that rephlex lot thought up braindance

it's fun! why not use that? you can treat it seriously or
take the mickey out of it and nobody cares... it means hip
hop house techno breakcore you know - electronic music from
now! where's all the fun gone you lot! : )

=|R3FL3X|= from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-09 00:12 [#00020542]

Fun is fine . and ofcourse its fun. but.... er... IDM is
kinda stupid. When someone asks me what kind of music I
listen to, besides saying breakbeats, and some hip
hop/scratching, and drumn/bass and shit. I say pretty much
electronic. DIFFERENT STUFF>

od from perth on 2001-08-09 01:47 [#00020557]

why not just techno?
its such a cool word afterall

Barrett, Syd from Toronto on 2001-08-09 06:48 [#00020594]

i suppose the music is inteligent, but a much better word
would be creative.

you think that's a bad genre name? i think the worst one yet
is "Post-Rock" i.e. godspeed you black emperor!

what the fuck is post rock? after rock? so godspeed is the
final word on rock and roll? i don't get it at all.

rob fragilenine from a warm place on 2001-08-09 07:10 [#00020597]

I have an idea... Call it Non-Repetitive Electronica...
That's what I class some of my stuff to be, when I can't
think of any other name for it (ie. the
electronic-funk-hiphop-dance-rock stuff and hard-industrial
metal techno jazz jungle-core)

Chrispy from UK on 2001-08-09 10:14 [#00020633]

I dont call it IDM coz it sound like Im too dumb to like it,
so Im not allowed to listen to it. I dont think other music
is dumbed down, its just thats what people like. When people
hear Aphex and say "what is this shit? Its mad, turn it
off!" Its coz they dont like it, not coz they're dumb.

jim from leeds on 2001-08-09 12:52 [#00020673]

call it braindance!
that covers robert normandeau to dmx krew!
and it's the term that aphex himself recommends.
if the aphex fansites don't adopt this term, then IDM will
live forever (sob)

geonime from geoworld on 2001-08-09 13:05 [#00020675]

I agree with Jim, Braindance is an excellent word for it.

Chrispy from UK on 2001-08-09 13:41 [#00020680]

Sounds better than IDM. sounds more like music and less like
a program!
