Over the past years I have seen a lot of electronic live
shows. And have to say.. that "IDM" live shows kinda suck
it.
With the exception of squarepusher, Venetian Snares, Jamie
Lindell.... and cex...

I havent seen DMX crew, bogdan, ovuca, or cylob yet...

I think there HAS to be more interaction with the crowd or
SOMETHING to improve idm live gigs.

What do you people think about this?

(Anyone here seen a Venetian Snare show? I saw the one at
the Smell.. and it was AWESOME, he was yelling and
headbanging and cussing.. it was great!)

yes ,I was deeply dissapointed at the Alive festival.

Funkstorung/Global Goon/Like a Tim all just stood there
behind their lap-tops.

you expect bedroom musicians, generally introverts, to be
rockstars and jump around and kick their legs and swing from
the rafters?

what are they like before and after their sets? are they
quiet? or are they out there raving like mad men?

they are probably pretty quiet and private in real life, why
would they be different on stage?

One show that was really surprisingly good was the Mouse on
Mars/Stereolab show I saw a few years back.

During the encore they surprised everyone by taking the
stage together and playing a track off the "Cache Coeur
Naif" EP (which they had collaborated on), but after that
they went off into these great new songs that I'd never
heard before.

That was a pretty memorable show ... but I've been to others
that have been a bit dull. Same with bands using real
instruments.

I'm not into live performances. If I ever DID go to an live
performance, it would be for the social interaction (fat
chance of THAT happening!), not the music.

IDM live shows that I've watched or heard on the net are
damn underwhelming looking. Can't say for sure, I wasn't
there, but doesn't look like something I'd be into.

bah, you go to the show for the music, not an onstage
performance. i reckon once i start playing live though, i'll
stack boxes up on the stage and throw things.

well it's insulting when you pay lots of money to see one of
your favorite artists live and they could care less about
being there (or show CONTEMPT for the audience!), and it
also sucks when you're excited to see them live and it
sounds exactly like it does on disc and you don't see them
putting any effort into their performance.

titsworth,

please tell me what you would have them do? these are
basically audio computer geeks thrust into the limelight and
expected to be david lee roth. if this is how they create
the music, why would you want them to be something they are
not?

they do not want nor need tons of dancers doing syncronized
steps to their music. they do not need million dollar stage
shows. they are there to put the music as they wanted it, to
the listener. thats right, listener. you are there to listen
to the music. if they wanted your attention on them they
would rip their clothes off on stage and run around like
most pop stars of the day.

they want you to hear the music and focus on the music. that
is what it is about.

close your eyes, open your ears and mind and listen to what
they are doing. even if it is straight from the record.
thats what they intended when they recorded it so that is
what they play. what is wrong with that?

>they do not want nor need tons of dancers doing syncronized

I don't know about that, man...

C'mon, we could throw a blue screen up there and have giant
whales and baseball bats flying around. Maybe we could even
get David Hasselhoff to show up and just start flying around
the room for no apparent reason.

I would have midgets in costumes running around on stage
trying to kill something with wooden bats.

Fuck that man, just press play on your laptop and have
yourself hung by one leg from the ceiling while your family
members hit you with bats.

Shit, that would be great for a funeral, with your corpse.
To top it off, you'd have to have a picture of Corey Feldman
on the side of your casket and get the youngest boy in your
family to take his (Corey's) $1000 jacket for sale on his
website (yes, he has a site -- go to it, it's funny) and
just throw it and whoever it lands on, they all beat with
bats while Cooper's World and A Love Supreme is playing
simulaneously playing. For the grand finally, they lower
your corpse down from the ceiling with Reign in Blood
playing and then proceed with the beating.

Plaid puts on a good show becuz they use this projector and
have all this video to go with their audio. oh and they use
a camera that shows them mixing and stuff. it spins around
on an arm.

i said nothing about dancers or zany stage antics. i'm
talking about a) their attitude toward the audience and b)
just-push-play artists. they suck. they shouldn't have their
entire song ready at the click of the button. there should
be some live manipulation and construction. you should be
able to tell it's live. plaid and orbital are great examples
of this. mark bell backing bjork on the homogenic tour, he
did an amazing job tweaking the music live (i haven't seen
any lfo shows so i don't know if he does the same thing with
his own music). matmos are also very good live performers,
with and without bjork. aphex twin also used to be an
excellent live performer. dj shadow is great as well,
because even though his music is made up of samples he
switches things up live. i could go on but i hope you see my
point.

point taken.
it just irks that people want so much from live performers
when they were never "live" performers to begin with.

didnt mean to go off on ya like that.

it's no problem; i can understand being frustrated with
people who expect every "techno" concert to have dancers
like prodigy, or to have a live backing band like cornelius
or groove armada. i don't have any expectactions, but i do
have high expectations of the PERFORMANCES from artists that
i know are capable of greatness.

i'm sure Squarepusher usually performs amazing concerts, but
the mp3's of his live in tokyo off the new album really do
sound as though he pushed play on a CD player containing Go
Plastic.

"i don't have any expectactions" should've been "i don't
have any SUCH expectactions"..

zaphod: i've heard good reviews of his concerts, they're
supposed to be very frantic. i know he used to play live
bass and drum machines at his concerts in the mid-90s but
i'm not totally sure what he does now, i just know it's more
laptop oriented.

Wow a lot of people responded to this one! neat!

Portland I think they dont need to have a rock star
attitude.. I mean.. if you are going to put on a show... and
have people pay money for it. Then just put on a SHOW. Blue
screen... something to look at.. anything. You can be an
introvert and put on a good show.

"Fuck that man, just press play on your laptop and have
yourself hung by one leg from the ceiling while your family

members hit you with bats."Clic

thats funny sh*t!

I always hate this discussion.

I agree with Portland: its about the music. its nice if
there are visuals, but the sounds are what counts.

I thought the electronic music scene would be the ideal
genre to drop all the 'rock star'- bullshit.

LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN

stop whining like little girls.
