Has anyone seen this movie yet? I didn't see any other
topics on it.

I just got home from it. I have never heard so many grown
men and women scream so loudly in my entire life.
Seriously.

I saw it Friday night. A was absolutely amazed at all the
plot holes relating to the aliens themselves. Also, when the
end of the movie came and it's point was made, it was a real
let down for me. But I won't say anything more, for the
people that haven't seen it and want to.

I didn't notice plot holes that much but they did leave them
really mysterious which was good, I think..

It was sorta like Jaws in that it built the suspense without
showing off the big bad special effects until mid to late in
the film..

I will stop talking for others' sake now

i went with my BF this past weekend to a packed movie
theatre where everyone leaves their phone on....and we sat
next to this man who kept making WEIRDO noises.....i was a
little on the edge of my seat....holding my BF's hand
tight......which made me feel better. but otherwise i didn't
let out a peep.

i enjoyed it, it was not extremely predictable, the aliens
were scary and mel gibson and joaquin phoenix's preformances
were very quiet which was really unusual.....so in a word i
LIKED it =0)

i just watched it today adn i thought it was swell.
all his films have this nice message in this enrelated plot
with an interesting subject matter that doesn't seem to be
dwelt on.
but you are always waiting for just that extra bit, even
though it rarely comes.
i liked how 'his' character just kind of leaves for the
lake.
like he knew, and escaped teh depravity of it all!
that's the power of being god i guess!

it wasn't scary for me, but every one else was right out of
their seats from time to time.
the opening credits adn score totally kicked bum!!!

um>to bed skodt, you old daddy!

I thought it was pretty nice.

Mel was pretty soft-spoken in it, kinda cool that way
though.

damn my Bf mentioned the same thing.....how all of his films
share some common theme......maybe about God, religion,
etc.

and yea his cameo in the movie was really great.....and how
he KNEW abOOt the watahhhhh.......i had no idea abOOt that
till the end......i was enthralled =0)

i don't wanna sleep.....i wanna bang on ze drums all
day.......sleep is for the WEAK.....j/k....tee hee

but would you have liked it as much if you didnt have a guy
sit next door makin those wierdo noises?..that must have
enhanced the experience...I want a guy making weirdo noises
in all the movies I go and watch..I will pay double..

i can't wait until M nightshamalamadingdong releases another
15 crap movies, so we can be rid of him.

i thought the sixth sense was boring, don't even give me the
thing about the 'cool' ending cuz it suct

unbreakable was lame

and after my friend told me about this screen gem it makes
me wanna watch Resident Evil w/ the commentary on....

offline binarydreamer from Littleton (United States) on 2002-08-10 05:49 [#00343705]

don't see the Resident/commentary connection..
Sixth Sense was worth watching once, but I couldn't stand to
sit through that another time for the rest of my life.. he
moves so goddamn slow, which could work in some places but I
have yet to see him pull it off.
As for Unbreakable.. jesus, why?

didnt see unbreakable...

was it really that bad?

offline USACID from Death Valley (Zambia) on 2002-08-10 05:57 [#00343713]

the resident evil movie was sooooo bad, i turned on the
commentary track, and it made it even worse, made me wonder
if the producers/director\writer even played the right
fucking game....

After watching the first 1/2 if not 10min of unbreakable you
should automatically figure things out, sorta like fight
club ;) but fight club is soooooooooooo much better

offline binarydreamer from Littleton (United States) on 2002-08-10 06:05 [#00343718]

ah ok.. i saw the latter half of resident evil, liked the
scene with the Dobermans - dogs were done nicely with
computer animation, some sick music taken off NIN's remix
album Fixed was in the background, rest was lame.

Yeah sadly Unbreakable was terrible, gotta love Fight Club.
Survivor (book by Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club as
well) is going to be made into a hopefully amazing (though
delayed) movie! Huzzah!!

**SPOILERS**

Zeus and anyone else - some plot holes that I've since
read/heard about:

The aliens came from a distant planet and thus travelled
light years in a space craft that they made and operated,
but they couldn't make a primitive battering ram to break
down doors?

The alien could jump onto the roof of a house in an instant
but it couldn't just grab Mel's son and run at the end?

The aliens are 'allergic' to water but they choose to invade
a planet that is 75% water?

That's all I can think of.. either way it's still a really
cool enjoyable movie

Yeah, those are the big ones.

Why was that last alien left behind? How did he eventually
get out of the cupboard?

And to elaborate on the water thing. I find it highly
unlikely that an alien species would develop and evolve long
enough to get to the point that they were apparently at and
have a physiology that resulted in massive chemical
reactions when water came in contact with them. Hydrogen is
the most abundant element in the entire universe, and it
makes up 2/3's of the molecular content of water. Water's
been found on several other planets in our solar system.
Basically what I'm getting at is how common water probably
is in the universe and the absurdity of an organism to exist
that is allergic to it. Also, what did these aliens want
with the humans? Don't they know that we ourselves are
mostly made of water? That whole aspect of the movie just
made no sense, and he didn't try to explain it in anyway.

And just for the record, I really like Unbreakable! I didn't
the first time I saw it, because I kept waiting for the pace
to pickup, but subsequent viewings were very enjoyable.

i could ansewr yr q's about the aliens, cuz if you really
think about it there is a simple explanation as to why they
were chosen as the subject matter, as with their weakenss,
but i don't really have the time.
it will be on the dvd for sure, so you can see for
yourself.

I enjoyed the film quite a bit and was moved by Gibson's
performance. However, one particular theme has puzzled me.

--SPOILER--

Much of the film is about faith and God. I'm an atheist, so
I can't speak for the religious. I assume that if you
believe in God and Creation you then must believe that God
also created aliens with gaseous tubes protruding from their
wrists. The ending of the film implies that God prefers one
of his creations over the other, which is what I've found
kind of backwards. The film implies that we are somehow
'superior' to the aliens when all history dictates
otherwise. We frequently kill each other, a species we know
and understand, in large numbers today and throughout our
existence. To think that we wouldn't slaughter and destroy
an alien species is completely absurd. We are a violent
species who shouldn't be held in a higher regard the alien
monsters. Protraying the aliens as the 'bad guys' because
they invade and us the 'good guys' because we're us, is
silly and contradictory to the religious theme. It's fine
and dandy to have a film filled with ornery aliens. I
disagree with the idea that a perfect being would set about
a chain of events (swing away, the bat, the cups of water
etc.) to protect one of it's species from another. It
doesn't make any sense. As an atheist I don't really care
and can enjoy the film on a entertainment level. If I was a
god-fearing man, where it becomes a bit more of a message
movie than a entertainment only one, I might be scratching
my head a little.

Here's an interesting theory I read in another post.

>>Ok, here is what I think is going on. If we are to believe
the radio report near the end of the movie (and we don't
HAVE to... the other radio report was certainly wrong) the
aliens are harvesting human bodies. Therefore, I say that
the human body produces some chemical that the aliens want
to use (or sell, barter, etc.)... maybe it's a drug, like in
"Liquid Sky". And this substance is valuable enough that the
aliens are willing to risk going to Earth to get it. Also,
since I doubt a civilization capable of interstellar travel
would have developed into such a feral form (save for
genetic engineering), I think that the REAL aliens are
sitting up in those ships, never seen by the audience. The
aliens who are dumped onto Earth are a lower class... maybe
slaves, or even a highly advanced beast. It wouldn't matter
to their masters then if a FEW got wet... but when Earth
discovers the weakness, they can't risk losing their entire
offensive force, and they retreat. Is this the REAL
explanation? No... but I think it works, and I think M Night
wants us to come up with ideas like this<<

ooooooh

I just got back from it, and I like that explanation just
fine.

Aliens were HORRID, just terrible. Otherwise, pretty
entertaining, got a matinee, otherwise wouldn't have been
worth it.

Horrible movie. Same director as for Sixth Sense. Boring
conversations, predictable plot. What else?
BTW the guy who escaped to the lakes was the director.

thanks for the entertaining in depth analysis golgi :)

The first half was pretty boring (crop circles don't
interest me much- they briefly mentioned the possibility
that it can be done with rope and boards to give a smidge of
credit to reality)
the latter half did a good job at getting into our natural
fear of putting out constant defense/retreating/hiding from
a superior offense. Sorta like the feeling in doom2 when
you're in a labrynth with a cyberdemon that wants to kill
you. or in a dream where something's chasing you.

lots of bad comic "relief" too. like when that girl died
when the car rammed her into that tree. Everyone laughed,
but I didn't get the humor...
at least mel gibson didn't do his default fast talking
stuttery character crap
