ok, so i got this email from someone on zebox.com
they want to do a "remix trade", where we both give each other the seperate tracks of one of our songs, and we remix each others songs.
Its an interesting proposal, but i have some concerns.
i dont know exactly how copyright law works, but technically, my stuff is copyrighted, due to making a hardcopy.
but if i where to give her the track breakdowns, I just feel kind of nervous about copyright issues.
has anyone done anything like this before?
i emailed her already and said I wasnt ready to do a remix/compilation... but the more i think about it, it kind of intrugies me, and im sure if i emailed back saying i changed my mind, she would be fine with it.
apparently shes a dj from lithuania
thoughts?!

go for it, might be fun. and it may do you some good to remix someone else's song. it might teach you a few things, which will later show in your own works.

I think it could be a prob, but not if she's from Lithuania. One can't really make money there by making music; besides, she won't ever get aired somewhere near you :)
So I think it's great you changed your mind :)

It'd be nice to have a secure constant income so I could not care about money in music forever, not that I'd make any anyway. You could just give the wav file, since your "skeleton file" data proves you made it. It would just be lame to act like u wish to remix only to steal material and claim u made it (why-other than to make money off it... uh false praise maybe...), but I wouldn't put people above this behavior

1. You don't need a "hard copy" for copyright to apply- although it will help you in court if you need to.
2. Do you really think your music is that good that someone would a) steal it, b) pass it off as their own and c) make money from doing so? I don't mean to sound cruel, merely objective.
3. Laws re: remixes are weird, it depends on whether the court (well, an expert witness) considers that particular "remix" a;
"cover verison", merely uses a "sample", is a derivative work.
It is also affected by how the person markewts it- do they claim it's their work? Do they credit you at all? Do they pay you royalties for use of samples? Have you made any form of contract regarding copyright rights with them?

What's a cover version anywho? i still wonder what all that fine print people sign at mp3.com says... well artists like fizzarum have tracks on there as well as the same tracks on a different label release...

Btw... do black people like IDM? I know plenty of peeps from every race who dig it, but not really any blacks. Anybody have a theory?

that's such a bullshit question. why would a whole race dislike a type of music? not only are there living and breathing black people LISTENING to idm (eg: archrival, a veteran of this very board), there're black people MAKING idm like there are black people in every type of music.

to answer some of your guys question of "do you really think shed want to rip you off?"
well, yeah. I mean, if she is interested enough to want to remix my music, and have me remix hers, that means she obviously likes my stuff.
But anyways... im gonna do it. Im sure its harmless, and if it isnt, il sue her ass muhahahaha- but really. Im sure its cool.
and sacharin, i must say, that is a pretty dumb question. You cant stereotype. There is no set law on it.
however, at the warp show i didnt see a single black person.
Not stating anything besides the facts.

i don't question you not noticing any blacks at the nyc show but i'm sure there were black idm heads in attendance. it's new york city for pete's sake! i know a lot of black people who like electronic music, and besides - prefuse73 is hip-hop in essence and i bet that would attract the "rap" crowd as well as idm fans.

oh, for sure. Im not making any statements or theorys.
Im just saying that at the concert, i do not recall seeing any person that was black. Thats all. But then again, its all in retrospect... it wasnt something i was thinking about at the time!
so my conclusion is...
uh.. whats my conclusion? oh yeah. im not saying anything except that i dont remember seeing any blacks at the show.
but im SURE there are blacks that listen to IDM

I listened to a little aphex in about 1995 or so, then again when come to daddy came out, but my mate told me to get into the music properly in like, 2001... and he is black.
So, yes, it is possible =o)

You need to have it officially copywrited meaning the copywrite people actually have a documented recording with a date, month, day and year, doesnt matter that it's all seperate tracks if she uses even part of one track and claimed it as her own you could sue. Also she could never say she wrote it first. With that done your safe because she can't use any track from that song on an offical cd with a bar code etc. It costs about $30.00 to copywrite one song, i think.
