Anyone know about synths?

Hi...

I'm looking to buy a synth setup which would give me sounds
that are quite like Aphex Twins.
I understand that this really ain't possible as he builds
his own gear etc. but surely there must be a synth out
there which can come close...

It's the drum sounds in particular that i'm interested
in.... How does he play them in?

samplers man

they are they way to go

you can get soft samplers which are great

also, if you want a great synth, csound is great, but its
all code... no virtual interface, just a blank screen. its
hard, but the most powerful

or try Reason 2.0 has synths, drum machines, samples and
effects, which lots of editing abilities for a very nice
price

oh, and no matter what you use, since his sounds are very
personalized, youre gonna have to work hard to get the
sounds you want lots of prgramming/effects/editing of
sounds

but, no one said it was easy =)

You see i'm new to all this synth, sampling, sequencing and
computer editing stuff

Could someone explain what the most used things are in idiot
language for a newcomer? :o)

what sould i get?
what does a sequencer do exactly?

I know next to nothing - but am really, really keen to learn
and don't mind spending money on getting the gear.... I've
got loadsa guitar equipment i need to sell - so money ain't
really a problem.

Help me :o)

ok, as a begginer

i definatly advise getting reason

it might take a while to learn (READ THE MANUAL)

but it will be able to do lots and lots for

but even if you arnt a begginer, its great, (i use it almost
exclusivly), its just good for begginers, cause it covers
everything, all in one program

sampler
synth
drummachine
mixer
effects

=)

Cubase is proffesional mixing
Reason is semi-proffesional mixing, but with low
flexibilaty for newcomers
FruityLoops is semi-proffesional mixing, but with
great flexibilaty for newcomers
eJay is for loosers

i never have used computers. i need it to be more hands on.
mpc 2000, korg er 1 and es 1 (drum machine, and sampler),
roland 202 (drum machine), and a bunch of keyboards that i
just sample and put on the mpc. thats it, then i play
guitar and usually play with a drummer and a bass player....
i have messed around with computers but its just not my
thing. i like messing around with reason, its really easy i
guess.

But yea, if you want good synths, fuck up a keyboard and
sample it or something. or just hook pedals up to casio.
hehehehe

hey, i know a really good synth. get that yamah sk-1 or
whatever that is. you can find one on ebay for pretty cheap.
SK-1 stands for sampling keyboard. you can sample with it
and its ment to be sampled. its got tons of effects and if
you put it through a phaser and delay and a little
distoration to make the signal fuzzy, it can sound really
really really dank. i guess then you could sample that onto
your computer. whatever, its all about finding tons of shit
and fucking around.

so all i would need to get started is a copy of reason and
some kind of midi keyboard?

eh, its a casio sk-1, very very very good keyboard. if you
open it up, and stick paper clips on the wiring, there is a
certain wire that makes whatever you are playing loop. i
love that keyboard.

It doesn't matter what you're using. Don't try and recreate
sounds you've heard, just spend a lot of time messing around
randomly until it starts to sound good, then tweak and
tweak. If creativity is going to flow, it will. You don't
need to spend £1000s on gear. Orbital supposedly made
Chime for under £100. If you want to learn to draw, buy a
pencil, not a whole load of professional quality brushes.

Google for software samplers, download a few, decide which
you like best and then download as many samples as you can
lay your hands on. Rip CDs and if you've got a mike, sample
anything else you think sounds cool. Then you'll have
plenty of raw material to put together into music.

[End of rant - sorry!]
