beware of bad MP3 compression

I've notised many mp3's off the net with bad compression,
and all with same effect. A small noise that lingers in the
background. It's like it's affected by the sound, so it's
not static. It must be because of the convertion between
cd's/wav and mp3. Have anyone notised the same effect?

it appears on the Nu-sounds compilation and some
mp3-versions of Chris Clark - Clarence Park

I noticed that...

But my Chris Clark album sounds FLAWLESS, chrystal clear.

Freescha, Slower than Church Music, on the other hand... my
MP3s of that are fuzzy and weird. I have to look for some
others.

Sometimes I have a bad sounding MP3, then I'll download a
couple more copies of it and see which one sounds the best.

i've talked to Manic Miner about making a new version of the
Nu-Sounds, because of the same problem. In some way
something went wrong in the compression/convertion.

I notice all kinds of crazy artifacts on 128kbps encodes.
The worst offender is second bad vilbel by autechre. It's
like a totally different song. :-)

Use a good quality encoder like LAME.

options:
CBR: use at least --alt-preset cbr 192
VBR: use at least --alt-preset standard

If you have to encode at 128kbps (for mp3.com or whatever),
MusicMatch 6.1+ (with Fraunhofer's codec) is ok at the
"normal" setting. LAME --alt-preset cbr 128 also works well.

Any recording with sustained trebble sounds, like cymbals
etc will suffer this problem if it's encoded at 160k or
less. Second Bad Vilbel has lots of background 'sighing'
sounds, especially after those chunky booms at the start,
that's why it sounds shit as an mp3

I don't like 'em less than 192. 256 if I can get 'em, and
even then I can hear it if it's a bad compression.

Try listening to the .nu compilation on a hi-fi system with
surround sound. Listen to the surround speakers and you'll
hear it.

Poor.

Though it's nice work by manicminer, and everyone else
involved :D

I really hope that Manic makes a fully featured remix

i've been impressed with that.

I will get at least 192k if I can help it: 128k sounds so
tinny and cheap - like a tranny radio.

all the more reason to buy albums instead of burning them or
listening to mp3's
