Apex twin: past his prime?

do you think rdj can still manage to release quality,
innovative music? or do you think he doesnt have that
'magic touch' anymore?

unlike a lot of people, i still enjoy listening to drukqs
and think it's his strongest release to date (well, a
compressed version of drukqs that nicely fits on a single
disc). so i believe he can pull off even better music. but
i dont think he can reinvent the whole scene like he did in
the early 90's though, nobody can.

any thoughts?

No, he cant reinvent what he used to be, more of a musical
prodigy than he is now, thats for damn sure.

I daresay he could release something that'd surprise
everyone. Whether he wants to it an entrirely different
matter

Just because people like him so much, doesnt mean he cant
release something bad, its just stubborn people (which there
are a lot of them here) will never admit its subpar, Drukqs
that is.

His next full length CD had better be a million times better
or RDJ can suck it.

People are more used to the sounds, that's all. In the
beginning we never heard something like it before.

There are some fantastic drukqs tracks but there are too
many shit uns.... what was he thinking....

Thing Is that I reckon there are so many shit aphex tracks
before drukqs too, the whole thing doesnt make a difference
to my opinion of him. He'll release something cool

drukqs was a mixed bag of an album. if he had cut it down to
15 or 13 tracks it would have been better, but still not his
best. gotta agree that hes been putting out alot of shit for
every great thing he does, so his career is far from over.

Richard could release stuff he did in 91 or 92 and still
blow people away - his early stuff is still innovative and
fresh.

Too bad he'll probably never release any of it though.

I will be very happy if he continues to incorporate more
acoustic sounds into his work, as he did on Drukqs. I
haven't noticed any artists yet that are really making a
true marriage between the electronic sound and the acoustic
sound. Ideally, for me, I wish an ensemble would
successfully commission him (ie. Kronos or ensemble modern)
and then he would take the sessions back and develop them as
he likes. Something like Frank Zappa's "The Yellow Shark"
mixed with RDJS stylings on "Richard D. James" and "Drukqs".
That would be perfect for me.

I think that there aren't many serious groups that would
have the desire and means of doing a collaboration like
that. I think Kronos is one of the few that might do it if
it came up.

I think his best is behind him, but that doesn't mean he
isn't still great.

Wayne Gretzky was putting up 97 and 90 point seasons in two
of his last three years... not even CLOSE to the 215 he put
up with the Oilers in years past... but still among the best
in the league.

This is what Richie is doing. I don't think he'll ever make
anything as fresh as the SAWS, ICBYD, and even the RDJ and
Come to Daddy albums. Drukqs is awesome, I think, but not
very ''fresh''... it's been done before... though rarely
THAT good.

So, he may be past his prime, but like an aging Wayne
Gretzky, even an over the hill Richard is better than 99% of
everyone else.

HOCKEY!!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!

AND GRETZKY MAY BE MAKING A COMEBACK!!!! YAHOOO!!!

actually make it crap... I personally think it's amazing, as

three Aphex Twin releases... REFLEX proves again how much of
an ass he is...

i think Richard could have a career making music for most of
his life if he wants.... and still be at least
interesting...

Nobody can generate endless creativity... most rock bands
run dry before a decade, just repeating and refining the
style and image they have created before... people find it
comforting to hear the same style over and over from a
musician.

so. what do people want from RDJ? to repeat himself or piss
off his fan base by trying new stuff? somebody is always
gonna complain

no hes not past his prime, each album he does sounds
different[he could easily do same thing over & over again]do
you think that after you first heard saw 85-92,less than a
decade later he would release something like drukqs[doubt
it]Do you know what kind of music hes going to release
next[if ever],and anyway I think drukqs has some of the best
work hes done. And im sure his next album will probably be
better.

I don't think RDJ is passed his prime one bit. For all we
know, he may not even have HIT is prime yet. None of us have
any idea what will come next, or even if anything will come
next.

But I'm willing to bet that something WILL come, and it WILL
blow our minds.

I pretty much dig the route he's taken over the years...and
I think drukqs is one of his best albums so far...

Those early albums are so simple & so much easier to get
into than his latter more complex works, it's no wonder some
people find em easier to deal with...

IMHO, one shouldn't really judge this drukqs thing , cause
that's just a bunch of crap thrown out for people to fuck
off. HOWEVER, if one's 'bunch of shit' is THAT good - that
means one really kicks ass :)
I thinks he's currently re-inventing himself - writing cool
software isn't that easy :) I'm quite sure he'll astonish us
more and more, cause he is definitely not an idiot, and of
course he understands all the 'innovation vs repetition'
shit we're talking about here...

i think reflex is completely right on this one...

APHEX OFFICIALLY FELL OFF!

and for all you stubborn people out there,u should now that
drukqs is just a hard-disc cleaner and a
contract-breaker......so youre very easy to fool..

and offcourse drukqs is his worst album to date,
it should be very obvious for everyone whos seriously into
music...and have at least 18 years i guess...but then again
theres a lot of this aphex-wannabies on this forum that
started to listen to music when they saw the "mind-blowing
drill'n'bass video of a new artist called aphex twin!!!"

so long.....stubborn ones!

As people said, he's evolving, as does any new artist.
you find your voice and then see what it has to say.
i'm not sure why people hate drukqs so much?
i'm sure it's people who aren't really familiar with musik
who disdain this album.
i say this because half of the tracks aren't made for those
with ADHD that need a constant barrage of beats to sooth
their weak minds.
the piano bits are some of my favourite bits.
it really is a beautiful instrument.
drukqs is my second fav album next to ICBYD, which i feel,
will never be topped.
for musik to be successful, it must be able to stand the
test of time, as does anything.
unfortunately mullets do not fall into this category!
[don't tell digital messiah>he might fall off his soapbox
and cry!]

and if you guys want to hear a synthesis of accoustic with
electronic, check out hefty records or bands like mum>some
of their stuff qualifies, at least.
there will be more people doing this transition, as i have
been mucking about with this sort of komposition.
and you know how the whole collective sub-conscious works!

personally, i look forward to his new stuff with no
expectations.
i must admit his last album 'Amnesiac' wasn't all that
though!

"drukqs" are not sa bad. it is not the most impressive
release by apx but quiete good and sometimes fantastic one.

The only thing I didn't like about Drukqs were the piano
tracks. I've got tons of better ones but this may be a
matter of personal preference. The other tracks on the album
were amazing IMO, no one does it like Aphex Twin.

Do you really think Ae is by now more experimental than rdj?
I dare to disagree. However odd Ae might sound, they have
the STYLE - you generally can recognize their tracks. there
are characteristic things like gradient tone background,
etc. As to AFX - that man does TOTALLY new shit every
time... His boundaries are way looser than Ae's.

That's by no means critics of Ae - I love them and don't
want them to get too far from their great trend...

IMHO.

The first one(jynweythek) isn't a regular piano so that
makes it a little bit special but the melody isn't very
interesting to me and loses it's appeal after 3 listens

The second one(avril 14th) sounds cheesy to me and comes
across as a roboticly performed romantic piece, I was bored
of that one after 2 listens.

Maybe the piano tracks are a good gateway for some to begin
exploring classical piano music(Debussy, Ravel,
Rachmaninoff, Chopin, etc)...
