The Orb...

For those of you who are Orb experts, which album would be
best to start with. I'm not really sure myself, and I need
someone else's opinions. Also, does some of their earlier
stuff sound really dated now?

Thanks
Toejam :)

Toejam
Your best bet would be to get a hold of Live 93 as it has a
most of the mainstream tracks on it Towers of Dub etc.
Pomme Fritz is worth a shot if you like more of an avante
garde sound.
Or Orbvs Terrarvm is also pretty good.

The best stuff is the first 2 albums and live 93 in that
order i'd say. 1st is called "adventures beyond the
ultraworld" or summat like that and is a classic I reckon.
2nd called UFOrb which is also good. Dunno about 'em
sounding dated, maybe a bit but they're still well worth
checking out. Their recent stuff sucks though.

I saw them live in 93 and was so mushroomed out I couldn't
move too well but it sounded amazing!!! (I don't do that any
more...!!!)

I've got Adventures beyond the Ultraworld. And i hate it.
How anyone thinks this dated piece of crap is a classic of
electronica is beyond me. maybe their other stuff is good.

I only got their latest album, Cydonia,
and I like it.
But I'm also curious how their older stuff sounds.

much better, actually. Orblivion is flawless, IMO. sometimes
it gets cartoony, but i kinda dig that sound.

"I've got Adventures beyond the Ultraworld. And i hate it.

er - no offense but it sounds dated cos it's 10 years
old!!!!!!!! For it's time it was and IS a classic!
I'd find it hard to recommend any early Orb album really -
not because I don't think they're any good, cos I luv most
of it, but simply because I'm not sure how a new listener
would take to it. Listen with a bit of context in mind.

I recall reading a review of Orbvs Terrarvm a while back and
it was slated to feck...admittedly it's quite different to
alot of their stuff, but it's one of my fav albums of all
time - I seriously listen to it every night while I have a
ciggie before bed time.
You should try catching them live too - it's fantastic.

Anyhow - you can't honestly tell me Ambient Works doesn't
sound dated! Still doesn't mean it's no good!

Who cares about the "complexity" or the "layers" involved
when the music sounds terrible. Perpetual Dawn, Little
Fluffy Clouds, etc. -- sounds extremely cheesy and dated.
Not very interesting.

The Orb were innovators but come on - they were never that
amazing.

little fluffy clouds is immense. you might want to get
'u.f.off' which is their best-of, if you don't want the
whole back catalogue. u.f.orb is pretty good, but i probably
only like about half of all the orb stuff i've heard.

Adventures is still a classic. Period.
I think that Alex Patterson is a mastermind, a genius, not
smaller than RDJ.
I would start my Orb experience with U.F. Orb, though.

orbs' adventures beyond the ultraworld would be the clear
choice for me, still is an awesome album, and i was/still am
a fan, although not of the later stuff
u.f.orb is quite commercial so far as the orb go, but i
reckon its best to start at the beginning

Damn right! Saw them live twice, once in Toronto in '95, and
then for Area One. They (he) are a live act.

And they also have a Sense Of Humour. This may confuse many
of you serious electronica fans, and for that I'm sorry.
They also have a lineage, something you newbies to
"electronica" won't recognize. Samples and allusions and
references to everything from Reich to Parliament. How
anyone can love BOC and "hate" the Orb is beyond me and begs
the label of either poser or hypocrit(ic).

Little Fluffy Clouds is only cheesy because you urchins
first heard it on an Beetle ad. If you want to hear the
commercial electronic wank you accuse the Orb of being, try
listening to KLF!

The Orb is about big fat sounds in the big fat sky, and if
you can't get there, I pity you.

Watch Sleeper, and maybe you will start to understand
(unless you find Sleeper to be cheesy 70's filler by a lmae
and burnt out film maker, in which case I'd recommend Prozac
or Car Exhaust).

Cheers!

well, when i first bought their stuff, it was the adventures
beyond the ultraworld, but some of it bored me. but i was
blown away when a few weeks ago i bought orblivion. i like
listening to a few tracks while in a car on a long journey
cuz it kinda does something to me i think like sync's the
driving with the music or something...i dunno, i am weird
hehe. but orblivion is nice stuff, you'd like it.

yeah, but that was all Tammy Wynette.

Their earlier stuff wasn't too bad, the Mu Mu's and the
Timelords, etc. But the White Room was all just filler for
the Club Floor formula shite. IMHO

Uh-oh, here I go...
I am probably the biggest Orb fan in Canada (check out my
email address), I have 30+ orb cds. I am also a personal
friend ;) of Alex Paterson (one T). I have seen him/them at
least 7 times (amazing considering I was living in Ottawa,
Canada). The first time was Montreal in '93. Alex Paterson
is a true musical genius! His music is soo complex and
significant! Just listen/feel "Orb Live '93" - out of this
world!!! Their stuff was so ahead of its time...and
CLASSIC. Orb is my fave band yet I very rarely listen to
them, 'cause it's like a sacred experience, I have to be in
the proper frame of mind (which is all too infrequent), I
don't want the music to lose any of its power. I'm not as
crazy about their newer stuff, i best like pre-Orblivion
stuff.
Top 3 albums:
1. Orb Live '93
2. Orbus Terrarum
3. Pomme Fritz
...if you're just starting out try 1. or best of.

OK...I just picked up Bless You (Badord Comp...) and it
seems really good so far, and I usually need a few ticks to
get into these things...
I guess once you get the lads out of their life sucking
record contracts and set them up with their own (on-line)
label, the kids really get down to business!

I won't bother with specific track recommendations
yet...wait for the new topic!
