album: rjd2 dead ringer (def jux) rjd2 is the new dj shadow. maybe not really, maybe not at all, but it's difficult to think of a comparrison to an artist who has really blown my mind. in terms of samples, and putting together soundscapes that stand out so well. 'the horror' throws in a really funky hook, with the scooby doo crescendo sound through and through, laced with vocal samples that don't fail. drums are on point, and hip-hop has become almost operatic, flowing in movements that reach climaxes and fluidly progress to the point of absolute brilliance. moody collages of atmospheres and percussion seamlessly pasted upon each other. tracks like 'smoke and mirrors' are throwbacks to how i felt the first time i heard "endtroducing", and now that shadow has started to focus on making tracks differently, rjd2 can pick up the slack, and perfect the cut and paste genre even more so. i had heard previous tracks on the def jux compilations, and the 12" he had out last year, (june, which is featured here as well) but this is really just an amazing debut. from pianos to sweet sounding female vocalists, this record really has it all.
each track is interesting and is packed with all kinds of sounds, each with a mysterious quality to them, like old 7"s unearthed in someones basement, and sequenced up together at the same time. def jux pushing boundaries yet again, delivering a change of pace album that amazes, yet moves on from the colder type of solo album that was "the cold vein". this is a warm, inviting slice of nostalgia that demands attention, and will really surprise listeners. 'ghostwriter' is one of my favorites; a slow picked guitar mixed with a competing bass and snare drum. using organic, modern electronic, and sampled source material, rjd2 has created an absolute masterpiece.

guest rappers include jakki da motamouth and copywrite of the weathermen (on 'june'). alongside boom bip, rjd2 is the finest producer out there in hip-hop, from his "your face or your kneecaps" mix, to now, his full-length, is going places, and i can only imagine that its going to get better from here, which is hard to imagine.

After listening to this album 5 or 6 times, I just don't get it. I don't get it at all. I suppose I'll never appreciate instrumental hip hop. The tracks with the MCs are alright but the rest is completely mediocre.
I just don't get it.
