There is a new audio codec called mpeg plus! Anyone heard of it? The files are about 20% smaller than mp3's but a lot better quality...
Check it out here... http://www.mpegplus.de/

yeah i've tried it.
was searching for a replacement for mp3 couple of years ago, tried various formats like mp+ ogg mp3pro and some others.
chose ogg vorbis, as it obviously sounds alot better than the alternatives. still use it for everything i encode today.

The only place you run into problems with a format liket OGG is if you use portable MP3 players or non-computer playing equipment (i.e. DVD players that support CDR MP3s etc.)

I've used this a bit. In my opinion it's the best audio format out there in file size/quality ratio.
It has two problems though, you'll never see hardware support for it, and it's a closed format.
