im reading this for school its one of the few good books
you actually read for school. im surprised they let schools
read this because in many senses society is exactly like
this book. but people at school just think of this as a
fiction book and dont even relate it to the world(for the
most part, I do because i think a lot about this kind of
stuff, but average person doesnt) this book has so many good
quotes and interesting ideas. i really like this book and
animal farm as well by George orwell(eric blair). im gonna
try to get some more of his books sometime and see if theyre
as good as these.

i recently bought a beautiful copy of 1984, more of an
artful layout with graphics and images, playful usage of
text and crap, an excellent read. too bad its so close to
reality.

Animal Farm is one of the best books ive ever read. we read
it in high school once and i was so into it. it progresses
nicley from pleasent innocence to paranoia and backstabbing

I have an old orange penguin edition of 1984. I love it.

if you like 1984, you'll love brave new world.
the last sentence is one of the most beautiful last
sentences I've ever read..

1984 was a great year: Neuromancer was written, The Cure
released 'the top', Blade Runner was released...

Yeah, The Terminator was 1984, however, according to IMDb
Bladerunner came out in 1982.

Orwell is a genius.....and i'm glad that you are finding his
books interesting. they are timeless classic's that do
relate to society even today. in some ways
prophetically....kinda scary.

after reading the book, may i suggest seeing the movie. it's
b/w as i recall and stars john hurt. there is one scene in
the movie that is absolutely chilling and remains fixed in
my memory cells. i won't spoil it, but see the movie. it's
worth your time. =0)

(btw...the other books you mentioned as great as well, imo)

raskolnikov: that's something I would like to read. I've
seen the musical and the US movie with Liam Neeson and
Geoffrey Rush, and loved both very much.

LeCoeur: I've heard good things about that movie, I really
should check it out. How closely does it follow the book?

i didn't think the fim was in b+w.
maybe there is a technicolour version as well?
killer book.

the animal farm that someone has is illustrated by ralph
steadman.
i haven't heard of an illustrated '84 though.
i'd like to check that out.

you should also check out
yvgenny zamyatin's We
it was what influenced '84 and BNW
i'd also recommend these>
thomas moore's Utopia
plato's Republic

i have been talking about '84 for the last few days.
lately the world has convinced me that 2+2=5
it's hard to deal with.

spoiler follows this>

i read 84 when i was in grade four and it messed with me.
i cried at the end.
it was the first book i read where the hero didn't win.
very influential.
that copy has since started to fall apart from use, so i
bought another one.
it's getting pretty worn too!
very dark.
very true of today.
most people say that orwell predicted that the world would
be like that in 84.
truth is, that when it was going to print he still didn't
have a title.
it was 1948.
you can figure it out from there!
