what do you think about this new trend in music? about
cinematic orchestra, jazzanova and many more. personally i
like this kind of music but it is not real jazz for me-
maybe flanger is as complex and concentrated as it should be
but i am not an jazz-expert.

i think jazz is dead... tradition jazz that is

theyve come with every harmony theory... even non functional
harmony

they just play the "head" solos then play the head again

its boring and its bulshit

i like this new fresh approach... its jazz... but not with
the standard form...

cinematic orchestra is amazing

its jazz... but is not like a melody and solo section... it
just develops as a whole piece

i wish squarepusher would do more of the swifty style jazz
because that is just amazing.

oh, and i forgot to mention that its self indulgent

the solo section is just like "hey look at what i can do"

there is some good jazz... people who know what thier
doing.. but jazz is so popular... you have so many people
playing it... they cant all be good.

i guess i have a different view on it... since i go to
Berklee, which is like THE jazz school.

Im surrounded by it... and it drives me nuts. These people
need to move on.

(btw... berklee isnt just jazz....)

I was listening to St. Germain's Tourist album on the way
home, and that is a fantastic JAZZ album, with house beats!!
It's more jazz then anything... it's not samples, but real
compositions he made... something like Amon Tobin is not
real jazz... it's jazzy, but it's samples, come on... I
don't think jazz is dead... maybe it's been expanded as far
as it can be, but people like Miles Davis, and John Coltrane
will always sell I think... they'll just keep finding new
audiences...

ok... well what I meant by "jazz is dead" is that it cant be
taken any further in the direction that its been goin

of course miles davis will always sell.. he was genius...
but people cant top that you know?

its all been done.

and the people that did it will be recognized through
history... but anyone else that comes along is just a copy
artist not doing anything new.

jazz like squarepusher (ie music is rotted one note) and
other newer more experimental forms of jazz is where jazz is
headed in its evolution... sadly though... i think it was be
awhile before it really catches on with the diehard jazz
fans...

I think that the new road for jazz is through electronic
music... people like Squarepusher, and St. Germain mixing
actual jazz music with electronic music... the same for rock
music I think... the only real new areas for rock music is
the mixtures with electronic music, like Kid A, and stuff...
I think that's the future of rock and jazz...

exaclty

but the people who keep just writting formulaic jazz, that
is whats dieing... not in the sense that no one will listen
to it anymore... but in the sense that no new stuff of any
inovation will be made...

however... if i said squarepusher was the future of jazz in
my school... id probably castrated... and hung by my toes
and expelled from school

hehe

well... thats getting carried away... but its sure not a
good way to make friends!

I think that the whole freeness of jazz is enough to keep
people interested... jazz is a lot about just pure soloing,
and really, you can never duplicate a solo, so it's always
fresh in that sense...

yes... BUT the format of it will change

when you listen to music is rotted one note... could you
analyze it like any other jazz standard? melody, round of
solos... drums and bass trade eights... melody... tag, and
end?

no.

its improv... but its much less structured.
and its good this way

For me the Cinematic Orchestra are the best thing around at
the moment. I'd be interested as to how jazz fans would
react to it. To me it sounds as good as stuff by Miles
Davis, Charles Mingus, Coltrane, Adderley etc. I'm not
really up on jazz though and have only been getting into it
recently. I realise these names I've mentioned are
fundamentally important as far as the development of jazz is
concerned but I get put off by icons; they come with too
much baggage.

"I'd be interested as to how jazz fans would
react to it"
cinematic orchestra were invited to take part in Jazz
Jamboree in Poland one on the most important jazz festivals.
