Finally got around to sending Nir, the creator of Soulseek, some dollar via Paypal... I wasn't expecting it to make a big difference in my use of Soulseek but have been suprised at how much better it is when you get bumped to the top of the Queue when dling stuff... Definately well worth the $5 per month plus it ensures that SS stays around a bit longer...wish I'd donated a bit earlier as NIRs done an a great service to our community & it's cool to be able to send him thanks this way & the download privaliges make it even better... Paypal is real easy to setup...I've used it a few times for ebay payments and it works real well... There's a small charge made to your CC to start with (about $1.95) but that gets refunded as you use the system... So it's basically free to send anyone some money...Paypal make their money by charging the person receiving money a small percentage... Unfortunately I think that asking for donations is the best way to attract the RIAA's attention to the service. The thought of anyone making any money off file sharing, no matter how small, is probably enough to send them into fits. :-( |

NIR definately isn't making a profit from SS...and with the low percentage of people donating it's doubtful he ever will...I think we're talking of less that 1% actually making a donation so no-ones gonna get rich... Everyone's got rent & bills to be paid & family to look after so I've no problem helping NIR out...especially as he's not in work at the moment... (and I seriously doubt that SS even appears on RIAA's radar....it's a tiny community compared to the other P2P systems out-there...).. |

I don't think everyones sympathy should be for nir, yes it's a brilliant thing but there are plenty more people i.e. the artists, that disserve a bit more support. If Nir gave at least 90% of the donations to the artists that were downloaded, I'd approve completely. As it stands it's like supporting someone who supplys stolen VCRs in a pub. |

as people say, it's a donation...not obligatory...if he wanted to make money there are far better ways to do so than go this route...i.e. Enforced charges, Adware, PopUp Adverts etc.. So I'm happy his motives are geared towards being able to continue to run/develop SS..not making a load of cash or tunring SS into a commercial enterprise... |

Personally I always buy my stuff directly from the label if possible, at least that way the money is going to the people directly. Also the arguement about the RIAA doesn't really cover the type of music Soulseek is primarily used for, so it is unlikely it will be a target. I always buy from the sources I think need it most, for example purchasing from Warpmart. But if they offered a reasonably priced download service it would be even better. |
