I've only had a listen to her stuf fon warp radio and the
BoC remix of sandsings. Sandsigns is okay (BoC's influence
no doubt), but I can't help feel that she was just signed
because she was a girl- if a bloke made her music I doubt
warp would sign him...
bit like electrogirl on rephlex...

(Cue Lecouer et. all shrieking and attacking ceri)

she used to work in warp and is married to one of the
autechre guys....thats how she got into making music, she
never send in any demo tapes or anything like that...she was
an insider

She used to be the press officer for warp, as well as the
wife of Sean Booth. They are all friends, I don't think
it's 'positive discrimination'. Just friends..8)

You were saying if a bloke made her music, you doubt she
would be signed? that's positive discrimination, I'm not
attacking you. I think her music is really weak, warp
release her music 'cos they're friends and they might like
it...

Hey astrod:

Nice of you to jump to defend the poor little fragile women,
they obviously need a big strong man like yourself to
protect them from the big bad chauvanist pig.

re-read what I said: I didn't say she was signed because she
went out with the AE guy, that was a seperate post. I said
she wouldn't have been signed if she made exactly the same
music but was a man, I don't think it has anyhting to do
with her being married to the Ae guy, just that labels want
to be seen to not discriminate and so employ "positive
discrimination".

Nice of you to use the word "dickhead" as an insult- in
itself a sexist remark...

Also why do you presume I discriminate against women? I'm a
feminist, I'm for equal rights. It's positive
discrimination I'm against.

Quernstone: What a horrid sexist word...

My my my you really are a jerk,
so i'm defending the little ladies am i ? i think i'm
exressing an opinion - fuck you don't know when to stop ..
can you not read either - i didn't
mention anything about her being married to sean from
autechre - i simply said that you are an arse becuase you
think that both the artists you mentioned were signed on the
basis of their gender not music - a completley ridiculous
argument ..
but from this i can probably assume the worst ....
you are clearly not a feminist - you fucking try to hunt
down positive discrimination at the first hint of a woman on
labels you like ..hunter boy

Humm I was wondering what people thinked of her music...

I don't like it too.
like zeus says it's nieve.
And I don't like her because of one thing :
I went to a Plaid date in Paris, and mira calix was dj-ing
before, and she just plays records one after one, without
mixing, like a jukebox.
there were nice tracks but well, I did'nt paid 12€ to hear
the warp playlist but to hear REAL LIVE STUFF. and she plays
about 1h30 long !
then plaid started, and It was really good, but I got to
leave because I had to take the last metro ! aaargh !

I feel a bit sorry for her really...too easy not to take her
seriously and treat her just as the token female...

Regardless of how good/bad she is, all people say is it x&xs
wife, or WARPs token female...& the music gets ignored or
dismissed...

I haven't heard a lot of her music but the few bits I have
seemed ok...not something I'd rush and buy but respectable
and certainly worthy of release...

It's a pity that what seems like a forward thinking music
still sometimes feels like a male-only domain...but the same
seems to be true of most of western culture..which is kinda
sad considering we're in 2002...

If you do teach adults literacy, good on you- I've done
reading catch up schemes with high school kids and found it
very rewarding. The best was when I managed to get this kid
with A.D.D. to actually enjoy reading, it made it so
worthwhile.

Now to my response to what you said...

"hey dickhead - beliveit or not people don't discriminate
against women like you do"

I've already said I'm for equal rights, why accuse me of
discrimination?

" - so you don't like the music of
mira calix or lectrogirl - you think they were signed cos
they are women ?? what are you stupid ? "

If this was what I thought and it was untrue, it would
indicate ignorance, not stupidity.

"it's no wonder women don't get involved in electronic
musicv
fhe way they do in other types of music with attituides like

this"

This comment, and the following one where you responded to
me criticising you leaping to defend women is something I
feel strongly about. Leaping to defend a minority is very
insulting. It implies that they need your help and actually
insinuates that they are inferior.

Something that a lot of black people complain about is
"white liberals" jumping in to protect them (verbally), it
suggests they are incapable of doing it themselves. I
remember a thread about sexism where Jonesy admitted that he
looked like a fool for leading the defense for women.

It's one thing to support a minority, it's another to think
it needs your leadership.

"and the pummelling bjork gets ie _"she got where she is
by sleeping with talented men" .. "

Bjork is one of many female artists I have the utmost
respect for and I really enjoy her music.

"your taste is your taste your sexisim is your fucking
problem - please don't spread it around"

I resent being called a sexist. The point I made was that I
felt in this instance positive discrimination had been
applied. If you don't believe in positive discrimination
you're quite ignorant. Whilst not a s common as "normal"
discriminati

discrimination, it does exist. Saying that it doesn't is on

once again you are talking - i 'm not implying women are
inferior i'm saying when you the guy who says becaus he
doesn't like music of electronic artists who are women
states they are on a label cos they are women - it's the
kimd of sexist assumption that they're not good enough
without it ...total shit and an explicit example of sexisim
- if anyone is suggestiing ingferiority it's you
also you might notice there are no women on this site to
answer your shit back - maybe it's cos half the avatars are
sexy pin up girls i dunno
i'm not offering women leadership at allnever once does it
even sound like that ..that's an easy safe way to defend
your self against any argument against you isn't it ???
i was just bemoaning the lack of women interested in this
scene and reasoning that attitudes like yours could be to
blame.
anyway as you stated earlier you'r the feminist aroun d
here....i'm saying you are silly because you assumed that
both are present on the labels cos they are women a thing
which reflects on the labels as ones that would both do this
in order to have more women on thier labels - very
foolish..
so you like bjork good for you -
but the argument i quoted is one i've heard on this and
other boards and it's similar to yours - when you stated
that these women needed positive discrimination to get where
they are others have stated bjork needs the help of
collaborators toget where she is.
but basically i'm bored of this now you are ignorant you
admited it - now admit it was foolish to suggest that these
women are on their respective labels because of their gender
alone..

I didn't admit to being ignorant- I said if what you said
was true I would be ignorant, not stupid.

I didn't just for this opinion without thinking. I really
like both reflex and warp labels and the artists on them.
Having heard about 90% of the artists on warp and about 70%
on rephlex, I find it more than coincedence that in both
cases the worst artist (IMO) on both labels also happens to
be -the only- female.

As I've said, there are a great deal of female artists I
like and feel that they have been signed purely on musical
merit, however these are (the only) two where I feel that
they have been treated favourably because of their gender.
I'm not saying there music is total crap and they would have
been signed if they had no musical talent at all, just that
they probably had it easier as a result of their gender.

Positive discrimination does exist (just look at the grants
offered to encourage women into engineering and
architecture-why precisely do we specifically need female
architects? Surely we should choose them on merit alone...

As to the idea that women are put of by "sexist" attitudes
such as these, I think it's actually quite sexist of you to
think that women are weak enough to be detered by a few
derogatory comments on MBs such as this. If someone wanted
to really become an electronic musician they wouldn't be put
off so easily.

Your branding me as sexist smacks of the kind of fascistic
leftism (yes, such a thing exists) that tries to deter
people from forming there own opinions by using the words
"sexist" or "racist". People are so afraid of being called
them they will automatically step down when this accusation
is levelled at them...

I remeber a friend of my family finding great amusement in
her stuffy new neighbours response to her accusing him of
being rascist. When he moved in and told her he didn't like
loud music (she hadn't played any). She said, "I'm an old
lady, do you think I'll play music because I'm black?" The
man blushed and was perfectly civil to her

afterwards. He had acted stupidly, but the point is that he
was so afraid of being seen as a rascist that he dropped the
argument. You're trying to do a similair thing by accusing
me of sexism.

I (and people who know me) know I am not and it matters very
little to me what an anonymous stranger thinks. I'm fed up
of this argument now and I will end by saying "I beg to
differ". I hope you will not bear a grudge towards me in
future over our disagreement, nor I to you.
