I have a laptop and the DJing software Traktor.
I want to use it to DJ live.
The thing is, to do this effectively, you need to be able to "cue" tracks in the headphones, whilst the other "deck" is playing through your PA. Traktor does this by putting one "deck" through one stereo channel, and the other "deck" through the other stereo channel.
I can't seem to get this to work. My laptop does claim to have stereo sound, yet whenever I try to do this, I always get some sound from both channels coming from each channel.
Has anyone had similar problems, and if so, how have you solved them?
Jand, have you got any ideas?

i found this exact same problem.... i think you have to have 2 soundcards to be able to use it properly, them you have both channels in stereo anyway... it would be crap giving out a mono mix

Jedi Chris was on about a new soundblaster thing that plugs into laptop soundcards and gives the same functionality as a soundblaster audigy platinum (I think it should have 2 line outs)
I think there has to be a way around it as v. few laptops have 2 soundcards built in or even space to fit a second one.

just been looking at google
"Tracktor Setup:
At the top of the interface is a red "setup" button. This takes you to the sound setup and preference page.
The soundcard setup in Traktor is quite advanced. This is because you need two separate outputs in order to beat mix properly. When getting a track in time it is best to have one track playing out through the master while the track you are fiddling with only comes out of your headphones. This makes it possible to compare the two tracks and make changes to one so that the tempos can be matched before you start the mix.
Traktor allows you to have separate outputs if you have two souncards installed, a soundcard with two outputs (e.g. Soundblaster Live!) or you can have each channel mono and separate the channels from your regular stereo output.
I could beat mix with Traktor on my laptop with one output using headphones. One ear would hear the master and one ear would hear the cue channel.
If you understood all that you will now know that Traktor can let you beat mix even if you only have a simple soundcard like the ultra budget one in my aging laptop.
However, if you have a Soundblaster Live you will be able to get the most out of this program. "...
will see if I can find more detail...

A bit more...
"setting up traktor
Load up Tractor. I've put labels on the diagram, so you'll know what I'm referring to. Before you start press setup to enable the appropriate outputs. Click on the audio tab. If you have one soundcard, press "Master & Mono 2 x Mono". This will output your master signal to one channel and your monitor signal to one channel. Unfortunately, this means your mix with be in mono. The monitor output is what you wil hear on your headphones, basically it will sound out of sync at first, but as you move the pitch sliders etc. it should eventually sound in sync. Your audience will hear the master output, which should be totally sync. If you have two soundcards click "Master & Monitor 2 x stereo" under two sounddevices, then assign one soundcard as the monitor and one the master output. Generally try to make your best soundcard the master. If you have a 3D soundcard with front and rear outputs click "Master & Monitor 2 x stereo under Quad speaker. It will output the monitor to the rear output and the master to the front output."...

Jand, I went home at lunchtime to give it a go!
I followed the instructions you gave and it seems to work now.
Cheers mate, you're an absolute diamond!
Hey, you remember a while ago you said you would be interested in remixing my track "Jeff" (http://www.yorklabs.co.uk/manicminer) - still up for it?
